eResearch NZ 2017: February 20th-22nd; Queenstown

eResearchNZ, as a national forum for discussion, aims to:
  • promote shared approaches to supporting eResearch needs
  • highlight current and emerging research priorities and trends
  • draw on experience from other regions
  • share work in progress and project outcomes.

Key dates have been announced:

  • Fri 02 December 2016: Programme announcement
  • Fri 25 November 2016: Presenters are required to be registered for the conference to guarantee a place in the programme.
  • Fri 18 November 2016: Presenters will be notified of their abstract results
  • Wed 26 October 2016, 11.59pm NZST - Abstract submission closes
    • Abstract submission deadline extended until Wed 16th Nov,

NeSI Software Capentry Workshops

NeSI are hosting two free Software Capenttry Workshops: one in CHC and one in AKL,

The 4th Multicore World: 17th - 18th February 2015

Multicore World is back in Wellington for 2015 and, as with last year's event (held in Auckland), it once again co-locates a workshop around the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project: HPC in the Cloud: "The SKA example" which will run on the 19th - 20th February.

National Research Data Services Survey

NeSI, a national infrastructure provider for essential eResearch infrastructure and capabilities, are currently conducting a survey to elicit feedback on their current data service offerings.

There doesn't appear to be a link to the survey from NeSI's web presence but if you are interested, an email with the details can be forwarded on to you, or you could contact NeSI directly.

The 5th annual NZ eResearch Symposium will be held at the University of Waikato, on Monday 30 June to Wednesday 2 July, 2014.

eResearch NZ, as a national forum for discussion, aims to:

  • Promote shared approaches to supporting eResearch needs, across institutions and disciplines
  • Highlight current and emerging research priorities and discuss how eResearch can enable Research, including by drawing on experience from other regions where similar activities are further progressed and where these initiatives might translate to meet NZ research needs
  • Share work in progress and outcomes from projects and programmes employing related technologies, platforms, and approaches.

eResearch NZ 2014 welcomes submissions for 5 minute lightning talks, 15 minute presentations, posters and workshops and demonstrations of work underway or complete within the last year.


NeSI calls for Applications rounds

All New Zealand researchers are invited to apply for access to New Zealand’s largest scientific computers.

The next window for applications under the Research Allocation Class will run from 7-16 Jul 2014

NeSI Workshop at VUW, Mon 10th June, 2013

NeSI staff will be at VUW to talk about what NeSI provides for researchers, and will focus on discussing scientific applications of HPC to the problems addressed by research groups in the room. PIs and researchers will be invited to contribute to an interactive discussion and to surface up any questions.

The 4th annual eResearch NZ will be held at the University of Canterbury, on Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 July, 2013.

eResearch NZ is a unique opportunity to meet colleagues from across institutions and disciplines to share practice and experiences, and establish joint initiatives with eResearch as an enabler.

The Call for Participation is now open, and will close on Thursday 18 April

The programme for eResearch Australasia is now availabe at The conference takes place in Sydney from 28 October through 2 November.

NeSI Roadshow at NIWA; Wed 12th Sept, 2012

New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) is holding a National High Performance Computing Roadshow in September and will be at NIWA onWed 12th Sept.The mornings of each day will consist of a presentation about NeSI and several demonstrations of how to use its facilities. In the afternoon, the team is available for individual appointments and small group discussion on discipline-specific issues.

Summer of eResearch 2012

Summer of eResearch is a national programme for enhancing New Zealand's eResearch communities while strengthening the prospects for young software engineers. The programme provides fully paid scholarships for excellent students to work on a project that will benefit the wider research community. For example, last summer a student from computer science worked with a genomics researcher to break a "bioinformatics bottleneck" and progress research into invasive species. As well as advancing the research open-source software was developed that is now available to researchers around the world.

Krista Steenbergen, a PhD student at the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences at Victoria University, is due to give a seminar in the BlueFern HPC Seminar series.

Director of e-Research Appointed at VUW

Prof. John Hine has been appointed as the Director of e-Research at Victoria.

Victoria OptIPortal launched

For the past six months computer scientists in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science have been building New Zealand's first OptIPortal. Friday afternoon, October 17th, the OptIPortal was introduced to VUW researchers with the help of a range of researchers.

Vic hosted a successful E-Research Symposium on 11 June. Around 60 research staff and students from Victoria attended, along with colleagues from Crown Research Institutes and government agencies.
