ECS Alumni Event - 25 Sep 2013 17.00 - 19.30

We are pleased to invite you to the presentation of the work
experience of alumni Michael Baughen Bachelor of Engineering), Stephen
Nelson (BSc, Honors, and PhD in Computer Science), and Chris Male MSc
in Computer Science).
-------------------------
Michael graduated in 2012 in the field of Electronics and Computer
Systems. After completion of his degree, Michael got a job at
Transfield Services as a Trainee Telecommunication Designer.

His work experience includes learning 2 new programming languages (VBA
and LISP), dealing with sub-contractors directly, developing systems
to track project progress and helping to implement national level
systems.
-------------------------
Stephen completed his PhD on measuring the behaviour of Java programs
in 2012 and found a position as a software engineer in a Wellington
startup that's using programming languages and cloud
technologies to deliver financial analysis and forecasting tools for
non-technical users.

Since graduating, Stephen has learned Clojure (a modern LISP dialect)
and used it to build a fully-featured web application that provides a
simple and intuitive interface to complex financial models.
Along the way he has contributed to numerous open source projects,
designed a database abstraction, and created an MVP framework for
building web applications in Clojure(script).
-------------------------
Chris Male graduated in 2008 with an MSc in Computer Science, focusing
on type inference for Java.
Having completed his Masters, Chris moved to Amsterdam and joined the
large European Java development industry cutting his teeth on a wide
variety of projects in eCommerce, education and
content management. As part of his work he began playing with open
source search solutions and
eventually found his way into the Big Data world working with
technologies like Lucene and ElasticSearch. After moving back to NZ,
Chris searched for an opportunity to work on more
meaningful projects and has subsequently joined Palantir, a
silicon-valley based data analysis company.
-------------------------
This presentation is an opportunity for you alumni to share your
experience, to expand your professional networking and to see how
cutting edge technologies are used by industry.

So, come and hear how they did all this, see them in action and ask
them questions.
