Research Interests

Most of my research projects are in the area of Web Intelligence and Text Mining. My current research aims to develop new models and new algorithms that improve text classification and clustering, web search, and web data extraction.

Here is a list of my research projects:
  • Evolving deep neural networks for text classification
  • Ontology-based text classification for clinical data
  • Hate speech detection with evolutionary-based feature selection and feature construction
  • Early Detection of Havelock North Campylobacter Outbreak - Evaluating Alternative Data Sources
  • Machine Learning for Influenza Surveillance
  • Sentiment Classification based on Bi-LSTMs and attention
  • Multi-view Multi-objective Web page clustering
  • Phrase-based Web page clustering powered by Wikipedia
  • Automatic Query expansion for hard search tasks
  • Clustering for information extraction
  • Semantic guided web page clustering

More information can be found in the Evolutionary Computation Research Group page and the Artificial Intelligence Group page.

I got my BE and ME from China in 1990 and 1992, and received a PhD from the University of Melbourne, Australia in 2000. I have been working at Victoria University of Wellington since 2000. I have had over 80 quality assured papers published in fully refereed international journals and conferences, including 19 in ARC Tier A*/A venues or JCR/Scimago Q1 journals. I have supervised more than 25 thesis and research project students to successful completion as a principal or co-supervisor, including 10 PhD and Masters research students, and 12 honours students. I have been a member of the program committee of about 45 international conferences and a reviewer for more than 10 international journals. I was the publicity chair for AI2018, an industry co-chair for CEC 2019, and a session chair for more than 10 international conferences and workshops.
