Kia ora! Hopefully you met one of us: Marcus, Ambreen, Luke, or David, representing Te Rōpu Āwhina (Maori and Pacific whānau on campus at Victoria University), as well as our School of Engineering and Computer Science. And hopefully we introduced you to Alice - a teaching tool for learning about computer programming.

So first, grab the "world" you made, by filling in your number here:

Save it as a file on your home computer. You can call it anything, but make sure you keep the ".a2w" ending.

Next, get the Alice program itself. If you got a CD from us, you can grab Alice directly from that. But this software is totally free anyway, so another way is to go to www.alice.org and download it from there. There is lots of other information on that site too.

Now run Alice, load your file, and go wild. Easy!

Other stuff

  • scratch is another great tool - similar to Alice but more like cartoons: try it out (like Alice, it's completely free).
  • If you have problems getting your stuff, or these instructions didn't work for you, let us know so we can fix things: email Marcus at marcus@ecs.vuw.ac.nz
  • This software comes from Carnegie Mellon University, but all our first-year engineering and computer science students use it to get started on programming. If you're thinking of coming to university soon, you can read all about how to get started at the School of Engineering and Computer Science here.
