Abstract

The increase in the occurrence of hateful utterances in online social communities is a widespread catastrophe. Effective approaches to combat this growing trend are still limited in several debilitating aspects. Therefore, the overall goal of this research is to design a system to detect textual hate speech instances on online platforms for subsequent actions such as prompt removal. Particularly, this thesis will explore strategies for augmenting the unbalanced textual data, methods for context-aware feature extraction and construction, and a technique for clustering the data all in a culminating effort to address the task of detecting online textual hate speech. For all these, optimization approaches to improve efficiency and effectiveness will be investigated.
