Abstract

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) aided wireless networks are currently the subject of considerable research attention due to their ability to manipulate the channel between users (UEs) and base station (BS) via the RIS. Unlike typical multi-user multiple input multiple output (MUMIMO) communications, the RIS introduces an extra degree of freedom which allows one to intelligently alter the RIS phases, essentially changing the channel, to improve various aspects of system performance. RIS-aided wireless systems is a relatively novel idea with the earliest published paper dating less than 2 years ago. This proposal begins with important background information and a literature review on RIS-aided wireless systems. We then present the current state of work completed, along with a paper that has been submitted to the International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2021. Finally, a future plan is proposed for a thorough investigation into the utilization of a RIS in wireless communications
