This session was led by Victoria Parkinson, Library Solutions and Metadata Coordinator at Kings College London, and organised by the Arlis Cataloguing and Classification Committee.

• Brief history of cataloguing—where we started, how we got here

  Computer catalogue, MARC21

• Decoding a MARC record

• Where we are now: RDA

  FRBR

  LRM

• Classification, subject headings/controlled vocabularies

• Glimpses of the future: national metadata projects, critical cataloguing, BIBFRAME

Learning outcomes

• Define what metadata, cataloguing and classification are

• Explain why cataloguing is important

• Identify the parts of a MARC record

• Recognise how the history of the cataloguing discipline impact on modern cataloguing practices

• Outline current developments in cataloguing
