Hi Fiona, At the National Library we add both LCSH and LC childrens headings to our records for juvenile literature. Subject searches in our OPAC operate across both sets of headings and I couldn't see a way of limiting a subject search to just one vocabulary in the OPAC. We can limit a search to a specific vocabulary in the cataloguing client, but that doesn't help users. There are 3 record views in our OPAC. The Quickview labels all subject headings as Subject with no further detail, so a record with both adult and juvenile headings has a single list of headings labeled Subject. The Detailed View distinguishes vocabularies and has the labels LC Subject and LC Children's Subject to separate these two vocabularies for users. The MARC view is a tagged display, so it is helpful to other cataloguers but not general cataloguer users. We (at the Library level) can alter what fields are displayed in both the quick and detailed record views and we can also alter the labels that appear alongside each field. I hope this covers your questions Regards Chris Chris (Christine) Todd Team Leader, Cataloguing Team 1, Content Services, National Library of New Zealand. I made the posting below to the Describe Forum last week, but haven't had any reponses so far. I wonder if anyone on the listserv can shed some light on this for me? Can I ask what libraries are doing in their local catalogues, with regard to the presentation of LC Subject Headings, and LC Subject Headings for Children? Many of the good quality, detailed records that we download from Te Puna, OCLC, Libraries Australia etc., often contain both LCSH and LCSH for Children in the records ($650_0 and $650_1). The way they present in our catalogue can be pretty confusing, though (even for staff, let alone customers). SirsiDynix haven't been able to answer my question about 'blocking' the $650_1 records from displaying in Horizon 7.5. What do other libraries do? Are they deleting the tags? Leaving them in and not worrying about the subject searches? Or do you have a way of adjusting what your system presents to the searcher? Any pointers would be MUCH appreciated! :-) Fiona Fiona Wasiolek, RLIANZA Senior Librarian Thames Public Library 503 Mackay Street, Thames p: 07 8686616 f: 07 8685042 e: fiona.wasiolek@tcdc.govt.nz w: www.thameslibrary.co.nz http://www.thameslibrary.co.nz/ Disclaimer: The content of this email may be CONFIDENTIAL OR LEGALLY PRIVILEGED, and is intended only for the persons named above.
