Kia ora koutou

The National Library of New Zealand is changing its approach to subject headings when cataloguing fiction intended for children and young adults.

For many years, we have followed the standards of the Library of Congress in its Children’s and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (previously called the Annotated Card Program), using Children’s Subject Headings (MARC coding 650_1) in bibliographic records for this type of material.

We have now decided to stop this practice, preferring instead to use Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) and/or standard Library of Congress Subject Headings with the subdivision "Juvenile fiction" as appropriate.

As with adult materials, we will continue to add a local genre/form term to support the retrieval of New Zealand literature, for example:
655 7 |a Children's stories, New Zealand. |2 local |5 Nz
