To kick off a productive 2011, we are pleased to inform you that another upload of Maori subject headings, Jan/Feb 2011 is now available. These terms came from the work of the MSH Librarian and the MSH Project Team
at the last project team hui, held in December 2010. There are 49 new MSH that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready to be used in library catalogues.
A total of 25 existing terms have been amended, some of which have been changed significantly. These terms include:
Hi ika, now covering all aspects of fishing and fisheries,
including fishing tools and fishing grounds.
Papaho,
meaning
main means of mass communication, now includes radio, television and film with links to newspapers and periodicals.
Waiata
meaning
songs has been expanded to include contemporary Maori songs.
Moteatea,
meaning
Maori songs has now been redefined as Traditional laments.
The following terms have new Tâhuhu/Broader Terms of
Whanau (Family) and revised Whakamârama and Scope Notes:
Whare wananga
meaning
universities has been expanded to include traditional meanings of houses of learning (Traditional).
The remaining terms have minor changes, and these can now be viewed at "Changes to existing terms, January 2011" on the home page of
Nga Upoko Tukutuku. If you have any suggestions for new headings please send an email to
