We are pleased to announce that Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku, the Māori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Māori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in September 2013. There are 25 new MSH that have been added to Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues.

Te mahi whakahou / Changes to existing terms

A number of existing terms have been amended, some of which have been changed significantly.  

· The terms relating to food gathering and sourcing have been revised and expanded. Mahinga kai o te wai (gathering seafood) has been redefined as a narrower term of Awa (rivers), Moana (seas), Roto (lakes) and Kaimoana (seafoods). A new term, Mahinga kai o te whenua has been created to encompass land-based food gathering.

· The narrower terms for Whāriki (woven mats) have been revised, and English notes have been added to clarify their meaning. These include Hei moenga, which is used for sleeping arrangements, Hei taupoki mō te hangi, which describes the hangi cover, and Whāriki wharanui, which is used for ceremonial mats.

· Tangihanga (mourning ceremonies) now encompasses the terms Whakatakoto tūpapaku, used for the placement of the body, and Ki te kawe tūpapaku, used for customs around the placement of the body.

· The terms relating to early childhood education have been revised to clarify their scope. An extra English Use For term, Early childhood education (Mainstream) has been added to Kura pūhou, and the English Use For term, Māori early childhood education, has been added to Kōhanga reo.
