As you may have noticed, the former Library of Congress subject heading ‘Illegal aliens’ has now been replaced by two new terms ‘Noncitizens’ and ‘Illegal
immigration’.
There have also been changes to several related terms. The term ‘Children of illegal aliens’ has been replaced by ‘Children of noncitizens’ and ‘Illegal
immigration’ while ‘Women illegal aliens’ has been replaced by ‘Women noncitizens’ and ‘Illegal immigration’.
Likewise, ‘Illegal aliens in literature’ has been replaced by ‘Noncitizens in literature’ and ‘Illegal immigration in literature’.
The former term ‘Aliens’ has now been replaced by ‘Noncitizens’.
At the National Library of New Zealand, we have been changing terms in our bibliographic records to match the new authorised terms.
For some background to these changes, please see news releases such as ‘Library
of Congress to Replace ‘Aliens,’ ‘Illegal Aliens’ Subject Headings’ and the documentary ‘Change the subject’.
