Hi all,
Following on from Anoushka’s email a couple of weeks ago about the changes to the CatSIG terms of reference, this is a
formal call for expressions of interest in joining ORDAC (the Oceania RDA Committee).
Introduction
Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the current standard for creating bibliographic descriptions for our published collections. As a new standard, it is under active development
and improvement and recent changes to the Steering Committee responsible for the standard will give New Zealand Cataloguers the opportunity to have direct influence on the direction and development of this standard.
The Joint Steering Committee for the Development of RDA (JSC), is currently transitioning to a new governance model, to be in place by 2019. This began at the November 2015 meeting
of the JSC, where the first step taken was to rename the Committee the RDA Steering Committee (RSC):
http://www.rda-rsc.org/.
The RSC’s new governance model is designed to widen international participation in the development of Resource Description and Access (RDA), and now the new structure will include
six regional representatives: Africa, Latin American and the Caribbean, North America, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
The Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) have been until now, providing Australian representation to the RSC and now it expected that representation will be supported by the
wider Oceania region, including New Zealand and other Pacific countries.
ACOC and LIANZA’s Cataloguing Special Interest Group (CatSIG) have agreed to convene an Oceania RDA group to support the Oceania representatives to the RSC and to the RDA Board.
This Oceania group will be called ORDAC (Oceania RDA Committee). The Committee’s support will include reading the proposals for changes to RDA which are put to RSC for discussion at the annual meeting, formulating an ORDAC response to each proposal, and preparing
ORDAC proposals ( http://rda-rsc.org/newrscdocs ).
Committee
The ORDAC committee will be made up of:
Catherine Argus - ACOC Chair, NLA representative
Edith Fullalove - ALIA representative
Ebe Kartus - Australian representative on the RDA Steering Committee (RSC), ALIA representative
Melissa Parent - Australian representative on the Dewey Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee (EPC), ALIA representative
Jenny Stephens - NLA representative
Monika Szunejko - NLA representative
Plus up to three representatives from NZ
We are looking for up to three people to join this group, with the first meeting for 2017 on Friday 24th February.
Expected workload and process:
ORDAC has a shared wiki space where the RSC discussion documents are posted in the lead up to the annual meeting of the RSC.
All committee representatives are expected to read the proposals and comment using the wiki. If there is a need for more in-depth discussion, then a teleconference is scheduled.
The workload increases in the lead up to the annual meeting as the group finalises formal responses to proposals, but the group may also spend time formulating new proposals at
any time through the year.
Additionally, as ORDAC is a new committee, a new terms of reference will need to written.
The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday 17th February 2017.
