Hello Fiona eLGAR has made the decision not to use the LC Subject Headings for Children (AC headings) to provide access to children's material except in rare instances. Instead we subdivide the LCSH headings by '|vChildren's literature' or '|vChildren's fiction' to denote a children's reading level. I don't know much about Sirsi but on Millennium it is possible to suppress or display headings from OPAC display based on indicator. For example, it would be possible for us to display subject terms in 650_0 (LC) but suppress those in 650_1 (AC). Suppressing the heading from OPAC display would not remove the heading from the subject index, however, so instead we choose to remove or edit them so that all headings in our records so that they conform with LCSH. An alternative, which may be open to you, could be to establish a separate index for the children's headings (again based on the second indicator of '1'). Good morning

I made the posting below to the Describe Forum last week, but haven't had any reponses so far. I wonder if anyone on the listserv can shed some light on this for me? Can I ask what libraries are doing in their local catalogues, with regard to the presentation of LC Subject Headings, and LC Subject Headings for Children? Many of the good quality, detailed records that we download from Te Puna, OCLC, Libraries Australia etc., often contain both LCSH and LCSH for Children in the records ($650_0 and $650_1). The way they present in our catalogue can be pretty confusing, though (even for staff, let alone customers). SirsiDynix haven't been able to answer my question about 'blocking' the $650_1 records from displaying in Horizon 7.5. What do other libraries do? Are they deleting the tags? Leaving them in and not worrying about the subject searches? Or do you have a way of adjusting what your system presents to the searcher?
