Welcome to the homepage for COMP 424 in 2020.

Big Data refers to the large and often complex datasets generated in the modern world: data sources such as commercial customer records, internet transactions, environmental monitoring. This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of working with Big Data. Students enrolling in this course should be familiar with the basics of statistical modelling, machine learning, and programming.

Hi all,

The course redesign has been officially approved by Associate Dean and VUWSA.

The main changes are in the assessment and the lecture schedules.  To summarise:

The main changes are:
(1)  increase the percentages of Assignment 2 and Assignment 3 from 20% to 30%.  The presentation part of Assignment 3 will be removed.
(2) remove exam
(3) add a take-home test in Week 9.  You should be able to finish the test within 1.5 hours, but the test will be released at least 24 hours before the deadline.  We can discuss more details next week.

There are no reduction in terms of the main content, but will be reduced lectures and presentations.

The main changes are
(1) remove  course reviews in Week 11 (originally prepared for exam)
(2) remove presentation sessions in Week 12 (originally is part of assignment 3)
(3) add a Questions&Answers session of 1 hour to help Assignment 3 Week 11.

Hope you are all doing well !

We regarding engagement day (Thursday day, 2 April),  we will have an online ZOOM lecture,  go through planned changes to COMP424, other details, and answer questions that you have.   Details are as followings:

Time: 13:35pm, Thursday, 2 April.

Duration: 20 mins

Zoom Details:  As a large course, COMP424 has a dedicated Zoom meeting/room that is permanently available, with comp424 as the ID. Anyone can join this meeting at any time.  You just have to go to vuw.zoom.us and join a meeting, typing the course code, comp424, as the ID of the meeting.

Lecture notes: in Black Board: the PDF named "COMP424_Important_CourseChanges"  under the "COMP424: Planned Changes and Additional Assignment" in "Course Information".

Meanwhile, you  need to do the followings ASAP (before Thursday "lecture" time would be the best)
- Please go to Black Board, download the PDF  "COMP424_Important_CourseChanges"
- Follow the instruction in the above PDF file, finish the super easy dummy assignment (details in the pdf file). This assignment is as an additional assignment of no marks, but you MUST do it,  you will find it to be the east assignment ever !
