ENGR 123 (2021) - Home Page

Welcome to the home pages for ENGR 123: Engineering Mathematics with Logic and Statistics.

Connecting with us

Announcements will be made via the blackboard announcement system

Peter, Steven and Howard have posted plans for the course under different covid levels. We'll send announcements if we move between levels.

The Course Coordinator is Dr Steven Archer. The lecturers are Prof Peter Smith and Steven.

Petes office hours are open door, if the door is open, take a punt! Stevens office hours are Mon/Thu/Fri 9-10am. You can also book in a time with either of us.

For administrative queries on assignments, tutorials and marking contact the relevent lecturer and the coordinator in the same email.

Dr Howard Lukefahr is in charge of the labs, their supervision, report marking, and the lab content for this course. Any queries about those should go to Howard in the first instance.

See the time table for an indication of when things are happening.

Lectures are on zoom, the address is https://vuw.zoom.us/my/engr123 and the password is engr123.

Tutorials start in week one and run in two flavours. See the time table for details.

Labs are also on Thursdays, also starting in week one. Again see the time table and lab resources pages for details.

Assignments and Tutorials and Answers

Test One

Check the blackboard announcements and here, email Steven and Pete if you still have any queries.

Both tests are out of 50, cover and formula sheets to appear here soon.

Here is the discrete cover and formula sheet for tests one and two.

Here are old discrete tests.

Here are sample test questions on statistics that are useful revision. Assignment 1 and 2 and tutorial 1 and 2 are also excellent revision. The test will cover all the statistics material up to the end of discrete random variables. There will be one question on data types, graphics and summary statistics, one question on general discrete random variables, one question on particular discrete random variables (binomial, Poisson, geometric) and one question on expectations. There will be no questions on continuous random variables.

Here is the statistics formula sheet for tests one and two.

Test Two

Details to appear.

There is no textbook for Engr 123.

Detailed lecture notes will also be posted on the course homepages from week to week.

Assessment information

See the course outline for an overview.

A quick summary is that Assignments are worth 25%, Labs 25%, Test one 25% and Test two 25%.

Videos Of Lectures

We record all lectures to video. To see videos of lectures, please follow the blackboard link in the menu to the left.

Help Desk

The Mathematics Help Desk is a good place to come and ask questions if you are having trouble understanding tutorial and/or assignment questions, or material covered in lectures or in your extended reading. You are welcome here any time.

Extra Help from Student Learning

There is more help available from Vic's Student Learning. They will help you with ENGR123, and they can also help advise on study habits and how to pass courses. Take a look at their website:

This summer, student learning will offer study and writing skills workshops in November and will be available to support students in T3.

Extension problems

You may not be able to solve these problems initially, but we'll build up skills to make them accessible.
