NWEN 404: 2020 Trimester 2
Welcome to the Mobile Computing
course. I hope to make this an interesting, challenging and thought-provoking experience for you. As this is a senior level course, you are expected to do significant self-study and reading beyond what is discussed during lectures.
The course introduces the fundamental network aspects of Mobile Computing. In particular, the course will focus on the location management aspect and emphasise the network and transport layers of wireless communication protocols and network infrastructures used in the various global mobile communication standards (e.g. GSM, 3G/4G/5G, mobility support in the Internet, etc). Key issues of how networks determine the location of devices (such as roaming, indoor positioning using WiFi, etc.), handle mobility of devices/users, and how applications handle node mobility and wireless communications will be explored. We will also cover state-of-the-art topics related to mobile computing that are discussed in the latest research publications. You are therefore expected to be familiar with networking concepts like the Internet Protocol, routing, switching, medium access control, etc., namely, topics covered in NWEN302 Computer Network Design which is a pre-requisite of this course.
This course will be run as a Directed Individual Study
module. There will be no lectures or tutorials. Students will be assigned TWO papers to read per week for weeks 1 to 5 and weeks 7 to 11. There will be TWO major assignments – (i) project and (ii) term paper.
Please refer to the Course Outline (left menu bar) for details on the objectives and other matters. Assignments, reading materials, etc are available on this Wiki page.
