Please excuse any cross-posting RDA update - April 30 2010 This is the first in a series of updates on RDA from the National Library of New Zealand. These updates will be posted on the CatSig and Nzlibs listservs and they will also be available on the Describe NZ wiki http://www.describe.org.nz Resource Description and Access (RDA), the planned successor to AACR2, is due for release in June 2010. There will be a free trial period for the RDA toolkit until August 31st 2010. There is no information available on prices for Australasian subscribers at this stage. Information on the trial period, subscription options for North American subscribers, including groups, consortia and print editions, are available at http://www.rdatoolkit.org/home The U.S. national libraries are conducting an evaluation of RDA with the participation of cataloguers from a number of other North American libraries. The results of this evaluation will not be available before March 2011. General information on the test process is available at http://www.loc.gov/bibliographic-future/rda/ For more specific details of policy decisions and training for the RDA test see http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/RDAtest/rdatest.html OCLC will be implementing the MARC changes related to RDA so that the testing can be carried out using OCLC Connexion. Information on RDA and OCLC is available at http://www.oclc.org/rda/default.htm A summary of the MARC changes associated with RDA can be seen at http://www.loc.gov/marc/RDAinMARC29.html The National Library of Australia and the Australian Committee on Cataloguing are participants in the RDA development. Information on RDA with an Australian perspective is available at http://www.nla.gov.au/lis/stndrds/grps/acoc/rda.html We do not anticipate implementing RDA at the National Library of New Zealand until the completion of the American evaluation because of the impact of that evaluation on our main suppliers of bibliographic records. However, as planning progresses, we will keep New Zealand libraries informed of all developments. One of our first tasks, after the release of RDA, will be to identify rules with options and alternatives and make policy decisions for National Library cataloguers to follow. These decisions will be made available to all New Zealand libraries. Thank you to those librarians who took part in the RDA Training Needs Survey. We are currently looking at the data from that survey and will make the results available as a summary in May. More pricing options for RDA

This email was posted to the RDA list this morning and contains further purchase and subscription options for North American subscribers. The increase in flexibility is very pleasing. We expect these options will also be available to Australasian subscribers, although prices for this region have not yet been announced. The Co-Publishers for RDA have received considerable feedback about what you need to make implementation of RDA as smooth, rapid, and efficient as possible, whatever your type or size of institution and whatever country you're in. Based on what you've told us, we're introducing some additional options to the previously announced pricing and product. * A solo-user license (one profile, one user) for the RDA Toolkit at $195 (USD). This solo-user license is in addition to, and differs from, the previously announced site licenses. The solo-user license is for single-user environments where access to the RDA Toolkit is not shared with other individuals in the same institution. By contrast, the previously announced site license base price of $325 (USD) is designed for multi-user environments where one concurrent user (with the option to add additional concurrent users) is shared with an unlimited number of individuals within the same institution. During the evaluation and initial implementation of RDA, when users are likely to need more frequent concurrent access, subscribers will receive double the purchased number of concurrent users of the RDA Toolkit at no additional charge for their first subscription period. (For example, buy a 2-user site license but get a 4-user license for no additional cost.) * Full-text loose-leaf print versions of both Resource Description and Access (RDA) and RDA: Element Set View. While most users agree the preferred way to interact with RDA is online via the RDA Toolkit, the Co-Publishers will offer the full text of RDA in print (including an index) as well as online, to help ensure that RDA reaches the widest possible audience. In addition to these print items in English, the Co-Publishers will work with publishing partners to distribute translations of them to supplement translations offered in the RDA Toolkit online. Although the National Library of Australia will be monitoring the U.S. national libraries' testing of RDA, we are not conducting testing per se. We have an implementation plan for RDA which encompasses some aspects of testing to enable us to refine our procedures and plan training. Some of the tasks on our plan are: * MARC 21 changes to the Libraries Australia database (and the NLA's own Voyager database) * Test exchange of records between Libraries Australia, customers, and other databases (e.g. OCLC) * Plan and execute any data conversions for Libraries Australia (e.g. Bible, Dept., GMDs) * Review and publish National Library of Australia and Libraries Australia cataloguing policies in relation to RDA options, alternatives and 'or' statements. * Create new workflows using RDA online and make these available in the product * Develop and/or Australianise training tools and materials and make freely available on the ACOC website. These tasks will be completed within the same timeframe as the US National Libraries testing. The Wiki Moderator Team chose the name Describe NZ out of a large number of submitted entries because it is easy to recall, has a New Zealand association, and encompasses 'description' in general, looking towards RDA and the future. Describe NZ is a wiki is for all New Zealand cataloguers and metadata professionals. This year CatSIG offered two sponsorship opportunities for people undertaking cataloguing study. We are delighted to announce Stephanie Bacon as the recipient of the Victoria University INFO 546 Bibliographic Organisation sponsorship, and Rosemary Smyth as the recipient of the Open Polytechnic 72272 Cataloguing and Classification sponsorship. CatSIG will reimburse the course fees for Stephanie and Rosemary once they have successfully completed the papers. Thank you to everyone who applied. It is also worth noting that this agreement expires at the end of June 2010 and is soon to be renegotiated, but we will be seeking to maintain this exclusion.
