We are very pleased to announce that Jacinta Paranihi has been appointed to the one year contract position of Maori Subject Headings Librarian, starting in mid-August. This is a new position, created as a pilot following feedback gathered around the LIANZA conference 2009 in order to ensure the thesaurus grows more quickly and to do research between project team meetings. The position has been created by LIANZA, Te Ropu Whakahau and the National Library working in partnership. Jacinta has been a member of the project team since 2009 and has a BA(Hons) in Maori Studies from Otago University. She also has some library experience from work in Dunedin and Wellington and most recently for AUT in Auckland. In other news, we have loaded 62 new headings to the MSH thesaurus including some tied in to this year's Maori Language Week theme of kai such as Tunu kai for cookery and Tikanga tunu kai for recipes. Additionally, there are a number of sports terms, including Whutuporo for Rugby Union ready for the World Cup build up. Wheelers Books in Albany is a library supplier which provides outsourcing of cataloguing and processing for public libraries. This part of the business is growing and so we are seeking qualified, experienced cataloguers. We are interested in part-time or full-time cataloguers - the hours are flexible. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA, and Dewey 22. Experience at original cataloguing would be an advantage but not essential. Preference will be given to a cataloguer who is capable of working with differing client requirements and more than one catalogue system. Experience with Horizon, Symphony, Spydus or Millennium would be an advantage but training will be provided. The pay rate is competitive, and will be commensurate with skills and experience. Australian libraries are not participating in this testing; however those that use WorldCat may encounter some of these records. The statement includes WorldCat protocols for record creation and editing during the test period. Libraries Australia is committed to implementing the MARC21 changes required to support RDA well in advance of the Australian RDA implementation date. Libraries Australia plans to implement the MARC21 changes in early 2011, until then AACR2 remains the standard for records in Libraries Australia. RDA at ALA and at the National Library

Hi All, Ksenija Obradovic of the University of Auckland, attended the 2010 ALA conference and in particular many of the RDA-related events at that conference. Ksenija's report can be found on the DescribeNZ wiki at http://www.describe.org.nz/ Since the publication of RDA, National Library senior cataloguers have been creating trial records, as Word documents, as a way of learning how this new tool works. We are also currently examining RDA core elements along with the core elements being used in the US national libraries test, to evaluate which elements we would use for NZ National Bibliographic records. When this work is closer to completion we will be making it available more widely. We anticipate that the results of the US libraries test may affect our decisions in this area. One of the challenges in using RDA is that many of the rules are so similar to AACR2 that it is perilously easy to miss the differences. A tool that we think will be useful to many libraries is the Library of Congress Train-the-Trainer webcasts. Although these were filmed in January 2010, and there are some differences between the draft and published versions of RDA, the videos give an excellent account of major differences in both approach and specific instructions between AACR2 and RDA.
