To those attending The MARC of Quality’s “Just For Copy Cats” workshops in Auckland and Wellington this year: TMQ has just informed CatSIG that the “Just for Copy Cats” workshop has just been split into two Parts. Part One of this workshop is now available online, free and should be completed before you attend the Part Two sessions, if at all possible. Deborah Fritz would like to emphasize that you will get a much better workshop experience if you have completed the introductory material beforehand. Part One consists of a series of 3 web-casts and 1 self-paced modules, which, together, provide background information for the material that will be covered in the 2-day face-to-face sessions. The Marc of Quality cataloguing workshops: closing date for registrations

It explains what the MARC standards are and how those standards tie in with our cataloguing rules (AACR) to help cataloguers create data that will function effectively in a library catalogue. Target audience: directors, reference people, acquisitions people, copy cataloguers, beginning cataloguers, and experienced but untrained cataloguers. There are two discrete parts to MARC21 in your Library: Part One of this course consists of a series of web-casts and web-based mini-courses and covers the underlying fundamentals of MARC and bibliographic information. This workshop provides an introduction to finding cataloguing records that you can copy, explaining some of the more obvious challenges and some neglected database issues, with a brief look at essential editing. You will need to come to the Book Blitz (4 days) workshop to know how to do a really superb job of editing records that you copy, but this workshop will get you started in the basic principles of copy cataloguing. Recommended prerequisites: MARC21 in Your Library. Target audience: acquisitions people, copy cataloguers, beginning cataloguers, and experienced but untrained cataloguers. This workshop will introduce you to the essential principles of subject cataloguing using the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). At the conclusion of this workshop, you should be able to assign simple LC subject headings and check the appropriateness of subject headings in records that you copy. No pre-requisites required. Target audience: copy cataloguers, beginning cataloguers and experienced but untrained cataloguers. Required texts: 1. Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)-Bring vol. 1 of any recent ed. 2. Target audience: Copy cataloguers, beginning cataloguers and experienced but untrained cataloguers. Wheelers Books in Albany is a library supplier which provides outsourcing of cataloguing and processing for public libraries. This part of the business is growing and so we are seeking qualified, experienced cataloguers. We are interested in part-time or full-time cataloguers - the hours are flexible. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA, and Dewey 22. Experience at original cataloguing would be an advantage but not essential. Preference will be given to a cataloguer who is capable of working with differing client requirements and more than one catalogue system. Experience with Horizon, Symphony, Spydus, Millennium or Te Puna Cataloguing Client would be an advantage but training will be provided. The pay rate is competitive, and will be commensurate with skills and experience. Subject Headings - for children

Good morning I made the posting below to the Describe Forum last week, but haven't had any reponses so far. I wonder if anyone on the listserv can shed some light on this for me? Can I ask what libraries are doing in their local catalogues, with regard to the presentation of LC Subject Headings, and LC Subject Headings for Children? Many of the good quality, detailed records that we download from Te Puna, OCLC, Libraries Australia etc., often contain both LCSH and LCSH for Children in the records ($650_0 and $650_1). The way they present in our catalogue can be pretty confusing, though (even for staff, let alone customers). SirsiDynix haven't been able to answer my question about 'blocking' the $650_1 records from displaying in Horizon 7.5. What do other libraries do? Are they deleting the tags? Leaving them in and not worrying about the subject searches? Or do you have a way of adjusting what your system presents to the searcher? LIANZA 2010 conference - sponsorship opportunity

CatSIG, LIANZA's Cataloguing Special Interest Group, would like to sponsor one person to attend the LIANZA Centennial conference: At the Edge -- Te Matakāheru. This will be held from 28 November - 1 December 2010 in Dunedin, New Zealand. Sponsorship will cover the registration fee and reimbursement of up to $500 for travel and accommodation costs. To apply, please write 1-2 paragraphs stating your reasons for applying for sponsorship, the year you last attended a LIANZA conference, your background and work experience, and the insights and learning that you expect to gain from attending. You must also provide written confirmation from your employer that, if successful, you will be given leave to attend. You must be a CatSIG member to apply (or be willing to become one). Consideration will be given to the following criteria: * How you and/or your organisation would benefit professionally from attendance * Evidence of enthusiasm, commitment and passion for cataloguing * Difficulty of attending the conference without sponsorship The successful applicant will be required to write a short report which will be included in Catapult - CatSIG's quarterly newsletter.
