Here are a few notes about RDA-related activities that might be of interest. 1. The following message from Marjorie Bloss, the RDA Project Manager, was posted on RDA-L a couple of days ago: The RDA text is still being finalized. Tom Delsey remains as the editor through June 2009. The RDA Secretary is working on a document that identifies a number of differences between AACR2 and RDA. Once this has been reviewed by the JSC, it will be posted to the JSC website. We'll make sure we announce its availability on both AutoCat and RDA-L . 2. The process of selecting libraries to participate in the evaluation of RDA is complete (or almost complete). The following information was sent to the Autocat list The US National Libraries RDA Test Steering Committee has notified all test applicants of whether they were selected to participate in the formal test project. Our intention was to email all applicants, selected or not, because we really appreciate everyone's interest. There were more than 90 applications and we could only select 21 to participate as formal test partners. Our public announcement is delayed until next Monday, June 1, to allow one selected participant time to confirm that it can participate. 3. The following message from the Australian Committee on Cataloguing was also received recently Dear Colleagues, The Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) is planning to hold a major seminar on the implementation of Resource Description and Access (RDA) during 2010. As a consequence we have decided not to hold a seminar in 2009. We hope that this early notice will enable you to plan to attend the seminar in 2010. Update from the Maori Subject Headings Working Party

Tena tatou katoa E nga mana, e nga reo, e nga kaitiaki taonga katoa o Aotearoa, nei ra he maioha na matou o te komiti whiriwhiri o Nga Upoko Tukutuku. The Maori Subject Headings Working Party met in Wellington on the 14th and 15th of May. This was the first meeting of this group, and for some members the first time they had been involved in the process. Over the two days the group identified a number of requested topics that they will work towards completing for the next upgrade of the thesaurus, currently scheduled for early 2010. These topics fell generally within the areas of ora, tangata and takaro. There will also be some ongoing discussion about the best treatment of the concepts around cultural identity and occupations which proved difficult to fit into the current structure. Additionally, some work was begun on resolving issues with existing headings: adding scope notes/whakamarama where they had been omitted, clarifying ambiguous references, correcting spelling errors and adding new references. Further work remains to be done on these reported issues, but a good start was made on the list. We will send out a notification once these corrections are available on the thesaurus. The team will meet twice more in 2009 to continue this work. CatSIG 2009 study sponsorships - successful applicants

This year CatSIG offered two sponsorship opportunities for people taking part in cataloguing study. We are delighted to announce Alan Seaton as the recipient of the Victoria University INFO 546 Bibliographic Organisation sponsorship, and Raewyn Paewai as the recipient of the Open Polytechnic 72272 Cataloguing and Classification sponsorship. CatSIG will reimburse the course fees for Alan and Raewyn once they have completed the papers. Thank you to everyone who applied. After some unexpected delays, we are pleased to announce that the Working Party will once again be actively expanding the thesaurus of Nga Upoko Tukutuku. The Working Party for 2009 is made up of the following members: Charlotte Stretton, Project Leader (National Library of New Zealand) Robyn East (National Library of New Zealand) Judy Keats (National Library of New Zealand) Jacinta Paranihi (National Library of New Zealand) Ann Reweti (Wellington City Libraries) Rangiiria Hedley (Auckland War Memorial Museum) Raewyn Paewai (Manukau Libraries) We are grateful for the many suggestions for new terms submitted by libraries from around New Zealand via our contact address (reo(a)natlib.govt.nz) and have plenty to work on. The team will be working with these suggestions and we are planning the next release for early 2010. The first meeting of the Working Party will be held in May. Cataloguing study sponsorship: Final reminder

CatSIG is pleased to announce two sponsorship opportunities in the following courses: INFO 546 - Bibliographic Organisation Creation of bibliographic records for library resources, including: original cataloguing using AACR2, MARC, DDC, LCSH; cataloguing digital resources using metadata schemes such as the Dublin Core; evaluation of bibliographic utilities as sources for copy cataloguing; and managing cataloguing operations. Course runs in Trimester 2 (July to October) 2009 at Victoria University, Wellington. Students can study on campus or by distance. This paper can be completed as part of a Victoria University qualification, or as a single Certificate of Proficiency (COP). The COP is suitable for * graduate librarians and information professionals wishing to update their professional knowledge, or extend it into fresh areas of information management. * graduates who are considering entry to the profession and want to experience postgraduate learning. Acceptance is dependent on applicants holding a university degree/appropriate library qualification or extensive experience. VSA position: Library Systems Adviser, Cambodia

Please excuse cross-posting Assist the National Library of Cambodia (NLC) with the use of its collections through offering and promoting a greater range of services. The NLC originally established in 1924 by the French colonial administration, and re-opened in 1980 after the Khmer Rouge genocide, is currently struggling to improve its services with a small number of professionally qualified staff and scarce resources. The Library is looking for an experienced Library Adviser to mentor and support its staff to use a newly installed electronic library system, to publish a National Bibliography of Cambodia and to improve the content of its website. This is a two-year assignment. We rely on grants and donations to provide our service hence our request to members of your organisation.. We have a small library of about 600 books and would very much appreciate it - if there is any cataloguer or retired cataloguer out there who would be interested in a volunteer project of cataloguing our small library. Or advising us the best way to catalogue our library. The library is situated at 44 Powell Street Avondale Auckland.
