"Rudimentary RDA" will be offered as a webinar using GoToMeeting in two three-hour sessions. Pilot RDA cataloguing course

Apologies for cross-posting. Dear colleagues The National Library of New Zealand (NLNZ) is planning to conduct a pilot course in Original Cataloguing in RDA in Dunedin in February 2013. The intention is that, if successful, this would be followed by courses in other parts of the country. The NLNZ intends to transition from cataloguing with AACR2 to RDA around April 2013. Three days is not sufficient to cover every aspect of RDA but the course will provide a starting point for original cataloguing in the new standard. It covers the basics of cataloguing using RDA with an emphasis on monographs, as well as use of the online toolkit. Content will be delivered using presentations, discussion and practical exercises. The course will use the materials developed by the National Library of Australia for their Resouce Description and Access : train the trainer course. It will held at the University of Otago on February 19, 20 and 21, 2013. The cost to attendees is not finalised but will be limited to catering. Attendees are responsible for their own travel related expenses. Copies of the full documentation will be made available online and should be printed out by attendees prior to the course. In addition, there will be precourse reading. Prerequisites It is expected that those attending the course have an excellent working knowledge of AACR2 and will have access to the RDA toolkit in their library by the end of February 2013. Subscriptions to the toolkit are available to New Zealand libraries via EPIC http://epic.org.nz/about-epic/subscription-options#Opt-in Expressions of interest Places on this pilot course are limited to a maximum of 12 participants, so please register your interest by submitting an expression of interest (EOI) with the following information: · Name and contact details · An indication of what you hope to gain from the training and how you might use it in your library EOIs should be submitted by email to janess.stewart(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:janess.stewart@dia.govt.nz> by close of business on Thursday 24 January 2013. We are using the Connexion client. 2 If we delete holdings from OCLC, I think they are automatically reflected in Te Puna. Does the same happen the other way round i.e. if we deleted from Te Puna, would that show in OCLC? A variety of state and regional groups are offering various programs, workshops, etc. In general, paying for training offers the ability to ask questions as you go. Free material requires more self-motivation to navigate and may have a scope or focus beyond your immediate needs. One must therefore balance time and money investments in choosing which route to follow. In the end, nothing replaces access to and working with the actual standard though. Catalogers currently trained in AACR2 may find the "backdoor" access of the online Toolkit's mapping from AACR2 to RDA to be particularly beneficial at first -- the FRBR underpinnings of RDA results in some unexpected locations for various rules (the new locales make sense when one reflects on things, but can be challenging to find in the heat of the moment). The print version offers an access model that may be more financially palatable, at the detriment of lacking the online version's bells and whistles, and of being somewhat out of date. John F. Lots and Lots of training. Repetition to become familiar with the concepts and applications. I noticed the LC RDA training courses can be helpful, but some were prepared in March, and a lot of things have changed since then. I got a bit lost because the version of RDA I was looking at on my computer did not look the same as the version in March 2012, so once you get past that and past the increasing amount of outdated information shared, they can be helpful. Since my emphasis is authority control, I am getting the most out of MARC21 for Authority data and cross-checking against RDA, LC PCC PS, LC guidelines and DCMZl. I was worried I was getting too old to pick up this new way of looking at things, but I think I may have a handle on it...only because we have been going over and over and over these principles. Re: [CatSIG] RDA Records in NZ library catalogues

Thank you for the links Chris and for the tips on searching for RDA records in the NUC. Auckland Libraries will find these useful. I have just checked and found that we have over 680 RDA records so far. Our answers to the questions below are: a) Any reactions to the records from other staff and users: No reactions or questions so far that we are aware of. This may be partly because we have chosen not to display the 336-338 fields in our OPAC. b) How the records display in your OPAC and how the new fields are (or aren’t) indexed: o We have suppressed the 336, 337 & 338 from display in the OPAC and in AquaBrowser. We have no plans to index these fields, although would like to look at the potential for adding them as filtering/faceting options in future. o We display the relationship designators in the full record only but are not indexing them. c) Anything about these records that you are having to change at the moment so that they work in your system: o We have had MARC updates 9-13 applied to Millennium and are in the process of having MARC update no. 14 applied (it is on our Test system currently). Cataloguers are changing the 264 field in RDA records to 260 in the meantime in order not to have it display as an invalid field. We are updating our indexes also but not for RDA specifically. For RDA, we only have the addition of the 518|d, |o and |p fields so far. We would be interested to know if other libraries are or plan to index other fields. d) Anything about these records that you have questions about and are wondering how or whether to edit: We are bound to have questions in time but do not so far at the moment as far I am aware. The three Auckland Libraries team leaders have started work on an RDA copy-editing cheat sheet for our cataloguers. We hope to complete this soon and will be happy to share. RDA Update from National Library

Hi All, The National Library cataloguers are now up to our fifth week of RDA training. We are working in 3 groups of 7 or 8 people and we schedule 4 hours each week for RDA. The rest of the time it's business as usual. The normal pattern for the 4 hour session is: * 10-15 minutes recap and questions from the previous week. * 1 hour - 1 1/2 hour powerpoint presentation on the topic for the week * the group then practice individually or together * for the last 30 minutes the group gets back together to share questions, examples or other items of interest We are using the LC training presentations as the basis for our training, however we edit and remove slides depending on their relevance to our situation. Mostly we are removing slides that emphasise less common situations as we want to be sure that we have a good grasp of basic principles applied to records for normal resources. We have completed work on describing manifestations and items (with an emphasis on print monographs) and in the week beginning November 12th we will start looking at identifying works. This part of our training is available on the DescribeNZ wiki http://nznuc-cataloguing.pbworks.com/w/page/60600175/RDA%20Training%20Part%… Our draft RDA cataloguing policies are also available on DescribeNZ. As we work our way more carefully through the RDA instructions we are identifying areas where we might want to review our original policies, so these draft policies could well change over the next few months. We also continue to follow news about RDA and the Bibliographic Framework developments on various listservs. The three Cataloguing Team Leaders (Charlotte Stretton, Janess Stewart and I) will be in Canberra from November 6-9 attending the National Library of Australia's RDA Train the Trainer course. I will send out another update reporting on that training when we get back.
