They are well established in the New Zealand market providing outsourced cataloguing services to a wide range of public libraries. Their senior cataloguer is moving on, and they are seeking the right person to help provide and develop this service. CatSIG is pleased to announce two sponsorship opportunities in the following courses: INFO 546 - Bibliographic Organisation Creation of bibliographic records for library resources, including: original cataloguing using AACR2, MARC, DDC, LCSH; cataloguing digital resources using metadata schemes such as the Dublin Core; evaluation of bibliographic utilities as sources for copy cataloguing; and managing cataloguing operations. Course runs in Trimester 2 (July to October) 2009 at Victoria University, Wellington. Students can study on campus or by distance. This paper can be completed as part of a Victoria University qualification, or as a single Certificate of Proficiency (COP). VSA position: Library Systems Adviser, Cambodia

Please excuse cross-posting Assist the National Library of Cambodia (NLC) with the use of its collections through offering and promoting a greater range of services. The NLC originally established in 1924 by the French colonial administration, and re-opened in 1980 after the Khmer Rouge genocide, is currently struggling to improve its services with a small number of professionally qualified staff and scarce resources. The Library is looking for an experienced Library Adviser to mentor and support its staff to use a newly installed electronic library system, to publish a National Bibliography of Cambodia and to improve the content of its website. This is a two-year assignment. During the Experiment, OCLC libraries with full-level cataloging authorizations will have the ability to improve and upgrade WorldCat master bibliographic records. The additional capabilities provided by the Experiment are an expansion of those that have been available through various database enrichment programs since 1991. The Experiment begins in February 2009 and will last six months. Introductory Web information sessions will be held throughout February for those interested in participating in the Experiment. OCLC hopes that these changes will result in more corrections and additions to master bibliographic records and more timely actions to correct record problems. The Experiment is inspired by long-standing requests from members to be able to do more-and more immediate-upgrading of WorldCat records. The Experiment also allows OCLC to test a "social cataloging" model involving the existing community of cataloging experts who have built WorldCat record-by-record over the past four decades. RDA Workshops

RDA (Resource Description and Access) workshop LIANZA is offering these workshops in partnership with the National Library of New Zealand, CatSig, The Open Polytechnic and Victoria University of Wellington. Workshop description Resource Description and Access (RDA) the new cataloguing standard and successor to AACR, is due for release in late 2009, signalling a new direction for cataloguing rules and catalogue records. This workshop aims to prepare cataloguers for RDA by presenting the following content: ● background and development of RDA ● introduction to FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and (briefly) FRAD (Functional Requirements for Authority Data), the conceptual models that underpin RDA ● examination of the RDA draft highlighting key changes from AACR ● MARC and RDA ● RDA implementation - including timelines for publication and implementation as well as library systems Presenters Chris Todd, Janess Stewart and Charlotte Stretton are cataloguing team leaders at the National Library of New Zealand. All three have been monitoring the development of RDA and are reviewing the final draft. Two National Library staff will be present at each workshop. Additionally, Amanda Cossham from the Open Polytechnic will be presenting at the Christchurch and Dunedin workshops. A senior lecturer from the Library and Information Management programme at VUW will present at the Palmerston North and Auckland workshops. Alternative titles: On behalf of Linh Wong

Hi Everyone We seem to be receiving a few books with different titles, but they are essentially the same book. They have different places of publication, so that isn't the issue. We have been getting feedback from borrowers that they have already read the book, but the title was different. To show the different titles are the same item we have put added title entries for the alternate title on both bibliographic records, linking them that way. However, unless borrowers look on the catalogue, they won't be able to know the book in hand has been published under another title that they may have read recently. Can you please tell me how you have dealt and/or are dealing with this problem.
