CATSIG is considering another round of TMQ (The Marc of Quality) cataloguing workshops in the second half of 2014. We are looking for expressions of interesting in the following TQM workshops: MARC21 in your library (1 day): This course is a beginner's introduction to MARC21 and how it is meant to work in a library automation system. It explains what the MARC standards are and how those standards tie in with our current cataloguing rules (AACR) to help cataloguers create data that will function effectively in a library catalogue. Rudimentary RDA (1 day): In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions: * How RDA is intended to help the users of our OPACs * What are FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD * What is really different about RDA * What is the RDA Toolkit * What is RIMMF * How the Toolkit and RDA-based cataloguing software (such as RIMMF) will make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources * What we should do with RDAMARC records that we copy, to make those records work properly in our OPACs See the TMQ website http://www.marcofquality.com/trn/rda.html for more information. RDA/MARC for Copy Cats (2 days): Copy cataloguing is becoming somewhat more complicated, as various important creators of MARC records gradually switch from following AACR rules to following RDA instructions for the records they make. RDA/MARC records certainly look different than AACR/MARC records, and so do the Hybrid AACR/MARC records that are also showing up for you to copy. But the good news is that there are some straightforward patterns in the RDA instructions that will help clarify the changes that RDA brings to our copy cataloguing process. RDA Minus MARC (2 days): Catalogers who already understand how RDA differs from AACR2 may still struggle with the more conceptual aspects of RDA, such as making relationships among the FRBR/FRAD entities. This advanced RDA workshop provides an opportunity to work hands-on with RDA in a non-MARC environment, using RIMMF, a freely available visualization and training tool. Deborah Fritz will explain RIMMF and lead attendees through a series of examples to create attribute and relationship data for works, expressions, manifestations, items, persons and corporate bodies; with the emphasis on understanding how RDA thinking is different from AACR2 and MARC. CatSIG is offering two opportunities for sponsorship in the following cataloguing courses ***72272 Cataloguing and Classification This course builds on and enhances library skills by introducing you to the principles and practice of cataloguing and classification. It is designed to enable you to apply international standards in the creation of catalogue records. You will also be able to analyse the international standards and to develop a critical understanding of the contemporary issues affecting cataloguing and catalogue management. This course is run by the Open Polytechnic from July 2014 and is a distance learning course. Course runs in Trimester 2 (July to October) 2014 at Victoria University, Wellington. Students can study on campus or by distance. NLNZ RDA Attributes policy

Hi All, The National Library has now added its RDA attributes policy to the RDA toolkit and this policy is available globally. It can be found in the RDA toolkit workflows under the title: NLNZ RDA Attributes Policy. We are also working on a policy document for RDA relationships and we will share that via the RDA toolkit when it has been developed further. In addition we have a number of RDA maps that we plan to share over the next couple of months. These will be available as RDA toolkit Maps and will all have titles beginning "NLNZ … " There are 2 maps available at present NLNZ Musical Sound Recordings and NLNZ Music Scores. These maps are slightly dated and we will be reviewing and updating them over the next few months. The release will include the RDA Update from the JSC. The Update will contain changes related to the approved proposals from the November 2013 JSC meeting. These changes are currently available in the "Sec final" versions of the proposals posted on the JSC web site<http://www.rda-jsc.org/index.html>. Typically releases occur on the second Tuesday of a month; however, due to the extent and complexity of this year's update we have pushed the publish date back two weeks. On April 15 we will publish an announcement describing the final contents of the release. Description This session will give an overview of the development, revision, and assessment processes for RDA, with a look at changes coming in 2014 and at possible proposals for consideration at the end of the year. Learning Outcomes Attendees will understand how changes are made to RDA and the LC-PCC Policy Statements, along with the time frames for getting changes approved and implemented. Who Should Attend? Catalogers and managers. Presenter Kathy Glennan is the Head of Metadata Creation and Enhancement at the University of Maryland and has more than twenty-five years of experience cataloging scores and sound recordings. She holds an MLS from UCLA. She has been actively engaged in the American Library Association's Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (ALA CC:DA) since 2005, where she has focused on the development of RDA in relation to music resources. During that time period, she served on the Joint Steering Committee's Appendices Working Group and the RDA/MARC Working Group. In addition, she recently completed three years of service on the Standing Committee on Standards of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). In 2012 she chaired the Task Group to Formulate or Recommend PCC/NACO RDA Policy on Authority Issues. Wheelers is a large New Zealand Library supplier providing outsourced selection, cataloguing and processing services for public libraries throughout New Zealand. We are currently based in Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore. We are a growing business and we are seeking qualified, experienced cataloguers for full-time or part-time work. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA, and Dewey 22. RDA knowledge is desirable but training will be provided if required. Experience at original cataloguing and cataloguing of DVDs would be an advantage but not essential. Preference will be given to a cataloguer who is capable of working with differing client requirements and more than one catalogue system. For these particular vacancies, experience with Millennium and Symphony would be an advantage but training will be provided. The pay rate is competitive, and will be commensurate with skills and experience. Flexible family friendly working hours may be discussed at the interview. Applications close 20 January 2014.
