Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in September 2015. There are 23 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. Te Whakakaokao is delighted to have completed all outstanding requests as far as possible, and we welcome requests for new terms. Rauemi-ā-ipurangi describes online resources in general, while Pūmanawa tautono refers to software applications, including mobile apps. · A number of terms relating to environmental issues have been added or clarified. Among these are Te mahana haere o te ao (global warming), Huringa āhuarangi (climate change), and Hangarua (recycling). Organic farming and organic gardening have been added as see references to Rongomatāne. · The terms relating to emotions have been extended. Pōuri refers to the grieving process, Mānatunatu describes anxiety or worry, while Pūkatokato defines a state of being desolate, heart-broken, or overcome with grief. · The scope of Ringa kaha has been clarified to refer specifically to land conquest (including the Musket Wars). A new term, Ngā Pakanga Whenua o Mua has been created to describe the New Zealand Wars. · The see references relating to Māmā (mothers) and Pāpā (fathers) have been corrected. The new term Mātua should now be used for parents and parenting. · The scope of Reo irirangi (Radio) has been extended to include radio stations. · The term Kōhurutanga (murder) has been added as a narrower term of Hara, which encompasses crimes and offences. · Two new terms have been added as narrower terms of Hinengaro, the pathway of thought. ALCTS webinar: E-Books via the Cataloging in Publication Program Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2015 All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time. Description: The Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program is now accepting e-books from major U.S. publishers to help build the Library of Congress’ collections. This is a major step forward in management of e-book collections at the Library of Congress as the process for ingesting CIP e-books will be used as a model for acquiring e-books from other acquisitions sources. The presentation will discuss all elements of the CIP E-Books Program, including the application process, publisher participation, e-book metadata creation, and ingestion of the e-books into the Library’s Content Transfer System to add to the Library’s collections. Learning outcomes: Attendees will become more knowledgeable about e-book metadata and ingestion workflows in a large library setting and how to identify high-quality pre-publication e-book metadata in bibliographic utilities. Who should attend? Metadata librarians and e-resources librarians of all types of libraries. Presenters: Caroline Saccucci is the Dewey Program Manager in the U.S., Programs, Law and Literature Division. She is also currently the Acting CIP Program Manager and was formerly a CIP program specialist. She is an active member of the American Library Association and serves as Chair of the ALC Public Libraries Technical Services Interest Group and Dewey Section Liaison to the ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section Subject Analysis Committee. Camilla Williams is a Program Specialist in the Cataloging in Publication Program. Her responsibilities include responding to inquiries from publishers and cataloging staff, recruiting and training new libraries and institutions to the ECIP Cataloging Partnership Program, and participating in new automated and metadata initiatives. Description: In July 2015 the Library of Congress will implement a new layout to the Cataloging in Publication Data Block which appears on the verso of the title page of print books and on the Copyright page of electronic books. The new layout is the result of an analysis of survey results done in 2014 that asked institutions what should be kept, added, or removed from the CIP Data Block to meet the needs of the twenty-first century bibliographic environment. There are numerous changes to the layout including the use of labels to clearly identify the different components within the block, addition of RDA and electronic data elements, and a URL that links directly to the LC catalog for easy download of bibliographic records. This webinar will introduce attendees to the new CIP Data Block, including instruction on how to interpret the elements of the Data Block for cataloging purposes. Learning outcomes: Attendees will become familiar with the CIP Data Block, be informed of its data elements, and learn how to use it to create catalog records. Who should attend? Catalogers in smaller libraries, particularly school, public, small college/community college, small special, and other libraries where the CIP Data Block is still referred to for creation of bibliographic records. Information Management and Services qualification review update

[apologies for cross-posting] Information Management and Services qualifications (including library, archives, records and heritage information) have been reviewed as part of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Mandatory Review of Qualifications at levels 1-6 (i.e., up to but not including bachelors' degrees at level 7). The aim of this NZQA review is to reduce duplication of qualifications and ensure the system is easy to understand, and also to ensure the qualifications meet the needs of the relevant sector. Phase 1 of the review was completed in 2014 following extensive stakeholder consultation, and five qualifications were approved by NZQA for development. Phase 2 development has been done by the IMS Governance Group (https://imsqualreview.wordpress.com/governance-group/) and their three working groups, in consultation with industry. The five qualifications are now available in final draft form. Major stakeholders including professional associations, major employers, education providers and interest groups have been asked to provide feedback on these drafts. Following this consultation, the qualifications will be submitted to NZQA before the end of the year, for listing on the NZ Qualifications framework as national qualifications. We’ve had an encouraging number of responses, and we are looking forward to a productive and enjoyable day exploring RDA using the RIMMF software. Maurice Dance : a Kiwi Jane-athon Inspired by the Jane-athons presented by ALA Publishing and the RDA Development Team earlier this year, the National Library of New Zealand cataloguing teams, in cooperation with CatSIG and The MARC of Quality, invite you to step up and join us in a Maurice Dance. This workshop has two goals: · to explore RDA data without the filter of the MARC format, using RIMMF software (RDA in Many Metadata Formats) · to look at how RDA data can be represented using linked data and what opportunities that might offer for cataloguing in the future We will use resources associated with Maurice Gee as the main theme for our dance, however other New Zealand authors, such as Janet Frame, and Katherine Mansfield could also join the set. During the Maurice Dance you will: · See a brief demonstration of how to use RIMMF to describe a couple of resources RDA used to describe a major New Zealand literary work using RIMMF software · Work in small groups to create RDA data in RIMMF for a variety of Maurice Gee (or another author) related-resources, including related works, such as motion pictures · Discuss issues you have identified from your use of RIMMF and RDA · Explore different ways of representing RDA data as linked data Your participation: We’ll all work together to make this a successful day. We expect to be working in groups of 3 – 5 people depending on levels of experience and specific interests. Determining whether or not a bibliographic record is a match can depend upon knowing what guidelines were used in the construction of the description. This webinar seeks to provide an understanding of the variations in bibliographic description that occur within a shared cataloging environment when a variety of rules guide the process of record creation. The primary focus is on the application of specific RDA guidelines in the creation of bibliographic description through the use of excerpts from RDA, sample title pages, and sample bibliographic records. Special attention is paid to the basic principles and organization of RDA, and its relationship to FRBR. Examples highlight the variation in descriptions that can result from the application of RDA guidelines and options, as well as how these descriptions vary from those based on the application of AACR2. *Learning outcomes: *To provide a basic understanding of the application of RDA in the creation of bibliographic description for print materials through the use of excerpts from RDA, sample title pages, and sample bibliographic records. She was responsible for leading the transition from AACR2 to RDA at the UofC in 2013. Catelynne has previously worked on cataloguing and digitization projects for the Government of Canada, and her research focuses on change management in technical services and the impacts of cataloguing changes on public services. She holds an MLIS from the University of British Columbia, as well as an Honours BA from the University of Toronto. Maurice Dance : a Kiwi Jane-athon Inspired by the Jane-athons presented by ALA Publishing and the RDA Development Team earlier this year, the National Library of New Zealand cataloguing teams, in cooperation with CatSIG and The MARC of Quality, invite you to step up and join us in a Maurice Dance. This workshop has two goals: · to explore RDA data without the filter of the MARC format, using RIMMF software (RDA in Many Metadata Formats) · to look at how RDA data can be represented using linked data and what opportunities that might offer for cataloguing in the future We will use resources associated with Maurice Gee as the main theme for our dance, however other New Zealand authors, such as Janet Frame, and Katherine Mansfield could also join the set. During the Maurice Dance you will: · See a brief demonstration of how to use RIMMF to describe a couple of resources RDA used to describe a major New Zealand literary work using RIMMF software · Work in small groups to create RDA data in RIMMF for a variety of Maurice Gee (or another author) related-resources, including related works, such as motion pictures · Discuss issues you have identified from your use of RIMMF and RDA · Explore different ways of representing RDA data as linked data Your participation: We’ll all work together to make this a successful day. We expect to be working in groups of 3 – 5 people depending on levels of experience and specific interests. You should be prepared, as a minimum, to download the RIMMF software, work through the series of tutorials available on the RIMMF website<http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf3/doku.php?id=examples>, and bring along some examples to work with.
