Good morning all, I just thought I’d pass this on as the June issue of Catapult is so far away. The video of the latest Library of Congress BIBFRAME update forum, which was held at ALA Midwinter on 1 Feb, is now available. It doesn’t seem to be on the official BIBFRAME site yet, but it was posted on Infodocket last week: http://www.infodocket.com/2015/03/23/now-available-video-recording-of-bibli… There’s a little more information about the upcoming LC cataloguing-in-BIBFRAME pilot which will be sometime between May and June, including glimpses of the tools in development. Nga Upoko Tukutuku Maori Subject headings update, February 2015

Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in December 2014. There are 14 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and also a significant number of changed terms. Nga kaupapa hou / New terms * Ana = Caves * Aria whakaako= Pedagogy * Eke hoiho= Horse-riding * Haereere ana = Caving * Haereere awa = River activities * Hokakatanga = Sexual behaviour and identity * Kaituhi = Authors * Kanga = Corn * Mahaki = Humility * Moari = Traditional swings * Poraka = Frogs * Ritenga = Practices, Processes, Rites, Rituals * Whakahihi = Arrogance, Pride, Vanity * Whakataetae hoiho = Equestrian events Te mahi whakahou / Changes to existing terms A number of existing terms have been amended, some of which have been changed significantly. These terms include: *The terms for sexuality and sexual organs have revised to clarify the distinction between physical anatomy and sexual identity. A new term, Hokakatanga has been added to encompass all aspects of sexuality relating to the physical, emotional and mental aspects of sexual behaviour and identity, while the scope of the existing term Taihemahema is now limited to sexual organs. *A new term Kaituhi has been added to refer to authors, writers, and scribes. Previously, authors had been subsumed within the more general term Hunga mahi toi , which denotes artists and creators of all kinds. *A long-standing request for a term for frogs has now been resolved. The term Poraka has been created, and is located as a narrower term of Aitanga pepeke, the domain of insects, arthropods, and hopping and jumping animals. *The scope of the term Tikanga (ceremonies, customs, protocols, traditions) has been revised and a new narrower term Ritenga has been added. The latter describes methods of applying cultural practices, and can also apply to Western ideas of rites and rituals. *The scope notes relating to the atua Tangaroa and Hinemoana have been revised to make it clear that Tangaroa is the guardian of the sea, and all things living in it, while Hinemoana is the embodiment of the deep seas and the guardian of instruments made of seashells. *The scope and relationships of the terms Kirehu (idoms), Kiwaha (colloquial idoms) and Pepeha (tribal mottos) have been clarified and expanded. CatSIG is looking for some new committee members

Thank you to those who attended the AGM. We had one volunteer to join the committee. Thank you Anoushka McGuire. We are looking for one or two more people to join the committee and share the workload. If you are looking for new opportunities for you professional registration journal this is a good option. Below is some information on what is involved in being on the committee. There is not a huge amount of work involved. We have one/two meetings per year by phone. The rest of the committee business is carried out by email. Each person is responsible for one/two area of the committee's work: * CatSIG information on the LIANZA website. This information needs to be kept up-to-date and any new information about training opportunities added. * CatSIG gmail list. This needs to be monitored to ensure emails are responded to promptly. Usually general queries or applications for sponsorship or training course we are running. * CatSIG's representative on the DescribeNZ wiki moderators group. A meeting is held every two months, the person needs to look at the wiki and contribute ideas on content and ways to continue to improve it. This can be done in conjunction with other members of the committee. * Listserv "bounce". The listserv automatically generates an email when someone subscribes or unsubscribes to the listserv these are bounced to an email address rather than going out to every listserv member. Likewise, any email sent to the listserv by someone NOT subscribed to the listserv also bounces. Emails from non-subscribers are forwarded to the list. * Secretary - taking minutes in meetings * Treasurer - sign off on invoices for payment along with another member of the committee and forward these to LIANZA for payment, and send out invoices for any training sessions we run using a template. Dear Cataloguing colleague, If you are going to be in Auckland on Tuesday 14th October, please come along to the CatSIG AGM which is being held in conjunction with the 2014 LIANZA conference. You do not need a conference registration to attend the meeting, and are welcome to bring colleagues with you who are not yet CatSIG members. You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat it during the meeting. The AGM business will be followed by two speakers from the National Library of New Zealand, Anoushka McGuire and Sandra McKenzie on an introduction to BibFrame for cataloguers. CatSIG, LIANZA's Cataloguing Special Interest Group, is offering sponsorship for one member to attend the LIANZA Conference 2014, Pou Whakairo - Connect & Thrive. This will be held at the SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland, from 12-15 October. http://lianzaconference.weebly.com/ Sponsorship will cover the registration fee and up to $1,000 for travel and accommodation costs. [Apologies for the cross-posting] CATSIG is running the following TMQ (The Marc of Quality) cataloguing workshops: MARC21 in your library (1 day): This course is a beginner's introduction to MARC21 and how it is meant to work in a library automation system. It explains what the MARC standards are and how those standards tie in with our current cataloguing rules (AACR) to help cataloguers create data that will function effectively in a library catalogue. In Wellington or online on 9th Sept. 9am-4pm CatSIG members $150, LIANZA members $200, Other $250 Rudimentary RDA (1 day): In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions: * How RDA is intended to help the users of our OPACs * What are FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD * What is really different about RDA * What is the RDA Toolkit * What is RIMMF * How the Toolkit and RDA-based cataloguing software (such as RIMMF) will make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources * What we should do with RDAMARC records that we copy, to make those records work properly in our OPACs See the TMQ website http://www.marcofquality.com/trn/rda.html for more information. But the good news is that there are some straightforward patterns in the RDA instructions that will help clarify the changes that RDA brings to our copy cataloguing process. Collection Description Librarian – Cataloguing Team 1/Serials Cataloguing Team Collection Services acquires and makes accessible material for the collections of the National Library and the Alexander Turnbull Library. Cataloguing Team 1 is responsible for the description of monographs and non-print material in the collections.
