Dear Cataloguing colleague, If you are going to be in Hamilton on Monday 21st October, please come along to the CatSIG AGM which is being held in conjunction with the 2013 LIANZA conference. You do not need a conference registration to attend the meeting, and are welcome to bring colleagues with you who are not yet CatSIG members. The AGM business will be followed by a panel discussing the implementation of RDA in New Zealand. The meeting will take place from 12.15pm to 1.30 pm in Brooklyn Two at the Claudelands Conference and Exhibtion Centre, Hamilton. Library of Congress website shut down

Kia ora At the National Library of New Zealand we've noticed that the Library of Congress catalogue etc is no longer available :-( http://www.loc.gov/home2/shutdown-message.html Due to the temporary shutdown of the federal government, the Library of Congress is closed to the public and researchers beginning October 1, 2013 until further notice. All public events are cancelled and web sites are inaccessible except the legislative information sites THOMAS.gov and beta.congress.gov. Original cataloguing in RDA - Hamilton course

Dear colleagues The National Library of New Zealand is planning to conduct a 2-day course Original Cataloguing in RDA following the LIANZA Conference. It will be held at the University of Waikato in Hamilton on 24 and 25 October, 2013. Two days is not sufficient to cover every aspect of RDA but the course will provide a starting point for original cataloguing in the new standard. It covers the basics of cataloguing using RDA with an emphasis on monographs. Content will be delivered using presentations, discussion and practical exercises. The course is built on materials developed by the National Library of Australia for their Resource Description and Access : train the trainer course. The course is being provided free but attendees are responsible for their travel related expenses. Copies of the full documentation will be made available online and should be printed out by attendees prior to the course. In addition, there will be precourse reading. Prerequisites It is expected that those attending the course have an excellent working knowledge of AACR2 and will have access to the RDA toolkit in their library by mid October 2013. RDA update August 2013 NLNZ cataloguing and RDA The National Library has been using RDA since April and some of us are surprised at how quickly AACR2 is fading into the background. There is still considerable discussion on the application of RDA at an international level and this has already resulted in changes to some RDA instructions. The National Library expects to adapt its cataloguing policies as best practices evolve internationally. Hybrid Records Several US library vendors are offering RDA records and at ALA some were offering an RDA conversion service. Such a service would “hybridise” existing AACR records in various ways; the main changes being the expansion of standard cataloguing abbreviations, the addition of the RDA content type, media type and carrier type fields, and the possible addition of relationship designators. OCLC supports the creation of hybrid records in its RDA policy statement<https://www.oclc.org/en-US/rda/new-policy.html> Hybrid records in the New Zealand NUC A cursory exploration of the NUC showed a good number of hybrid records, although many fewer than full RDA records. One major source of hybrid records for the NUC at present seems to be British Library CiP records, which are created by a vendor. Cataloguers who want to know how to identify such records could work through the RDA seminar session 8. The change in record standards creates challenges for cataloguers and challenges for automated record matching processes. One or two meetings discussed general implementation of RDA, but there was a greater focus on specific aspects of RDA than on the standard as a whole. Bibframe There were a number of ALA sessions that included discussion of the Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative (Bibframe<http://bibframe.org/>); the Library of Congress’s project for the replacement of the MARC format. The Bibframe email list includes posts from a mix of cataloguers, metadata specialists, and people who write code and is very interesting reading. This project could have a major impact on the future of cataloguing and is definitely one to watch. We are based in Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore. We are seeking a qualified, experienced cataloguer for part-time work with the possibility of full-time work in the future. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA, and Dewey 22. RDA training will be provided. Experience at original cataloguing would be an advantage but not essential.
