Ngā Upoko Tukutuku, the Māori Subject Headings project July 2015 update and call for requests for new terms

Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms, just in time to be released during Te Wiki o te Reo Maori, Maori Language Week. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in June 2015. There are 13 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We are delighted that we have completed all outstanding requests as far as possible, and we welcome requests for new terms. Nga kaupapa hou / New terms • Hine-pukohu-rangi = The atua associated with the mist • Io = A highly sacred deity • Kaiwawao = Defence lawyers • Kaiwhiu = Prosecution lawyers • Mahuika = The goddess of fire, sometimes referred to as a male • Matauranga whakahua = Phonetics • Mataku = Fear, dread · Mere = Greenstone clubs · Oro puare = Vowels · Roia = Lawyers · Tohu oro tapara = Double vowels · Wehi = Awe · Whakahua = Pronunciation Te mahi whakahou / Changes to existing terms • The terms relating to pronunciation and linguistics have been revised. The group looked at terms and concepts in the general area of Matauranga wetereo (linguistics) and added several new narrower terms. These include Matauranga whakahua, which is used for phonetics, Oro puare (vowels), Tohu oro tapara (double vowels), and Whakahua. • Several new terms relating to Atua have been created. These include Hine-pukohu-rangi, the atua associated with the mist, the higly sacred deity Io, and Mahuika, the goddess or god of fire. The scope notes relating to Rongomatane and Uenuku have also been refined. • Two terms relating to the experience of fear and awe have been added as narrower terms of Aronganui (emotions). These include Wehi, a sense of awe and fear in response to ihi, and Mataku, which is used for dread and fear. • The scope of Ture (law) has been clarified, and three new narrower terms relating to lawyers have been created. Roia refers to lawyers in general, while Kaiwawao is used for defence lawyers, and Kaiwhiu refers to prosecutors. • The scope of Patu, or hand clubs, has been clarified, and a new term, Mere has been created to describe a flat weapon of stone, often of greenstone. The right candidate may work some hours from home if they live in the Auckland Region or exclusively from home if they live outside of Auckland or New Zealand. Cataloguers at Wheelers are responsible for performing a variety of bibliographic duties in the customers Library Management Systems, including original cataloguing and bibliographic record upgrades of books and DVDs. -Apologies for cross posting- Dear colleagues CATSIG is considering running Rudimentary RDA webinar, a TMQ (The Marc of Quality) cataloguing workshop on 25 August. This is in response to requests in the survey for beginners RDA training. Rudimentary RDA (1 day): In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions: * How RDA is intended to help the users of our OPACs * What are FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD * What is really different about RDA * What is the RDA Toolkit * What is RIMMF * How the Toolkit and RDA-based cataloguing software (such as RIMMF) will make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources * What we should do with RDAMARC records that we copy, to make those records work properly in our OPACs See the TMQ website http://www.marcofquality.com/trn/rda.html for more information. Australasian Rare Books Summer School 2016

The event will be hosted by the State Library of New South Wales at the State Library in Macquarie Street. The Summer School will commence with a Welcome reception on Sunday evening 31 January. Details have not been confirmed but four courses are planned, each of which will run for five full days. We will be confirming the final course list and releasing registration information in August 2015. We can confirm that Provenance: Tracing Owners & Collections will be presented by David Pearson, Director of Culture, Heritage and Libraries at the City of London Corporation. Cataloguing Syriac

*Apologies for cross-posting* Hello, I have a cataloguing query and wondered if anyone can help... I have a foreign language book, which has been identified as Syriac Aramaic, in Estrangela. A colleague thinks this is similar to the works around Manichaeism, a religion founded in Persia in the 3rd century. This book was probably bound in England, mid-late 19th century, and the only English being a small label for "Watkins binder", who seemed to work with religious texts in foreign languages in late 19th C. Attached are a few photos of the title page, last page, other text and the cover. If anyone might be able to help me translate the title and imprint, please get in touch!
