We expect these options will also be available to Australasian subscribers, although prices for this region have not yet been announced. This solo-user license is in addition to, and differs from, the previously announced site licenses. By contrast, the previously announced site license base price of $325 (USD) is designed for multi-user environments where one concurrent user (with the option to add additional concurrent users) is shared with an unlimited number of individuals within the same institution. (For example, buy a 2-user site license but get a 4-user license for no additional cost.) * Full-text loose-leaf print versions of both Resource Description and Access (RDA) and RDA: Element Set View. Although the National Library of Australia will be monitoring the U.S. national libraries' testing of RDA, we are not conducting testing per se. We have an implementation plan for RDA which encompasses some aspects of testing to enable us to refine our procedures and plan training. Some of the tasks on our plan are: * MARC 21 changes to the Libraries Australia database (and the NLA's own Voyager database) * Test exchange of records between Libraries Australia, customers, and other databases (e.g. OCLC) * Plan and execute any data conversions for Libraries Australia (e.g. Bible, Dept., GMDs) * Review and publish National Library of Australia and Libraries Australia cataloguing policies in relation to RDA options, alternatives and 'or' statements. * Create new workflows using RDA online and make these available in the product * Develop and/or Australianise training tools and materials and make freely available on the ACOC website. These tasks will be completed within the same timeframe as the US National Libraries testing. We are delighted to announce Stephanie Bacon as the recipient of the Victoria University INFO 546 Bibliographic Organisation sponsorship, and Rosemary Smyth as the recipient of the Open Polytechnic 72272 Cataloguing and Classification sponsorship. As the RDA launch approaches National Library cataloguers have been following developments in the publication process. The website at www.rdaonline.org now includes information about the RDA Toolkit, U.S. pricing for the RDA Toolkit (but nothing about other countries yet) and updated FAQs. Web videos of the RDA Toolkit: A Guided Tour, webinars given on February 8 and repeated on February 9 are also available. The webinars give a useful outline of the functions available in the toolkit as well as other information about publication. Of particular interest are the opportunities to try RDA for free. Contents of the RDA toolkit will be available at no charge from the launch date (June 2010 at this stage) until August 31 2010. After the complimentary period potential subscribers can sign up for a 30-day free trial account. More details are available from the website. The U.S. National Library testing of RDA will begin after the launch and will take 9 months. - 3 months to learn to use RDA - 3 months using RDA to create records - 3 months for assessment of the results and to release a final report on the testing. This timeline takes us into 2011 before an implementation decision will be reached. The publishers also intend producing more webinars on various aspects of RDA and we will alert the lists as information becomes available. CatSIG, the LIANZA Cataloguing Special Interest Group, is considering another round of TMQ (The Marc of Quality) cataloguing workshops in the latter half of 2010. The courses suggested are: Marc 21 (1-day course), Just for Copy Cats (2-day course) (MARC basics for Acquisitions staff, copy cataloguers) in Auckland Book Blitz I (4-day course) (for advanced copy-cataloguers, original cataloguers) in Wellington Book Blitz III (2-day course) (for advanced cataloguers. Prerequisite: Book Blitz II) in Wellington and Dunedin LCSH I (2-day course) in Auckland Dewey I (2-day course) in Auckland The expected charges are: 1-day course - $220.00 for CatSIG members, $270.00 for LIANZA members and $345.00 for all others 2-day course - $440.00 for CatSIG members, $540.00 for LIANZA members and $690.00 for all others 4-day course - $660.00 for CatSIG members, $810.00 for LIANZA members and $1035.00 for all others If you or your staff are interested in attending these workshops, we would appreciate your response to some questions below. New Maori Subject Headings

Today the Maori Subject Headings thesaurus has been updated online to reflect the work done during 2009. We are pleased to announce 61 brand new terms added to the thesaurus, mostly in the topic area of health. We have also refined the scope notes for some terms to make their usage clearer where it was ambiguous. Much of the work in 2009 was focused on the hierarchical structure and checking that it remained true to the intention to reflect a Maori world view. To this end a few hierarchical changes needed to be made, and in a few cases the scope note for a term needed to be adjusted. The following are a list of affected terms: · Hauora is now a top term above Ora - this now matches to the scope note as originally written, and allows a logical space for the new term Mate. Since there is no change to the stated meaning of either heading, it is unlikely this change will have any effect on its current use in existing records. · Kaumatua and Waka (Whakapapa) and all headings under each have moved within the hierarchy to fit under the top term Whakapapa. There is no change to their stated meanings, so this is unlikely to have any effect on the use of these headings in existing records. · Haurangi has been disestablished and replaced with Haurangitanga. Haurangi is acknowledged as a more commonly used term, but Haurangitanga was felt to better convey the negative aspects of alcoholism. This change will require all use of the term Haurangi to be changed to Haurangitanga. · Tamariki and Taitamariki have had age ranges added to the scope note to clarify when these should be used. This change will require previous usage to be reviewed and may require some entries to be changed appropriately. · Mahi toi and Toi Maori have had significant changes made to their scope notes. There was considerable discussion within the Project Team about the risk involved in making such large changes, but it was felt that it was better to resolve the problems quickly than to allow it to remain wrong. Mahi toi is now the top term to cover all arts, with other topics rearranged under it, while Toi Maori will be restricted to traditional arts. This change will require previous usage to be reviewed and will definitely require some entries to be changed appropriately. In all cases where meaning or scope has changed, the National Library will be reviewing their records and considering the need to change the heading. A notification will be sent out once all required changes have been made on our records. In addition, the National Library will make available a downloadable file of MARC records for all titles with Maori Subject Headings applied. As you will see from the message, the publication of RDA has been delayed, with it now expected in June 2010. The good news is that pricing and purchasing information will be introduced at the time of the ALA Midwinter Meeting, 15-18 January 2010. Once RDA is published the testing period for the US National libraries will begin. The revised text has been successfully loaded into the RDA database. The product is currently undergoing thorough quality review and testing in preparation for release. We recognize that customers and prospective users of RDA need reliable and timely information for planning and budgeting. We are confident that this revised deadline is a realistic target for publication of RDA. Cataloger's Toolkit

Dear Cataloguers, I was wondering if people who use Gary Strawn's Cataloger's Toolkit could give me an idea of how they use it? e.g.: Do your original and copy-cataloguers use the BAM report regularly as part of the daily cataloguing workflow? Do you use the heading changes functionality in Correction Receiver? Which other features do you use regularly? ...or do you use the toolkit on an occasional basis for projects? And once you have established the configuration for the features you want to use, is it more straightforward to replicate it for an upgrade than it was to establish it in the first place? Any information about the above (or reasons for deciding not to use it) would be welcome, and I could collate responses for the list. Music Classifications

The National Library of New Zealand classifies its General music scores collection using the McColvin classification scheme. The Alexander Turnbull Library scores are arranged using an in-house system. At present, National Library cataloguers add McColvin classification numbers to all bibliographic records for music scores, including those for the Alexander Turnbull Library, on the assumption that this information is useful to other libraries. We would like to test this assumption by asking music librarians or music cataloguers for your responses to the following questions: 1. Do you use the McColvin classification for the scores in your library? 2. If the answer to the first question is Yes, do you find it helpful that the National Library of New Zealand includes this classification in all records for published scores? 3. If the answer to the first question is No, what system do you use for classifying your scores? Your responses will help us to decided whether to continue our current practice or to limit our assigning of McColvin numbers to the scores that we arrange by this scheme. [Apologies for cross posting] Tena koutou katoa, We had a wonderful time at conference, talking to those of you who could make it to the session - not nearly enough time for all the discussion we could have had. We also had a fabulous time at dinner at the Yellow Cross in SOL Square. Conference is now over, but here's one last chance to have a say. RDA Update from CatSig at LIANZA

RDA Update from CatSig Meeting 12 October 2009 Publication The RDA text was handed to the co-publishers on schedule on 22 June. RDA is scheduled to be released in December 2009. Initially it will be online only, and while it will be possible to print from the online product, it is being designed to be used online. A print version of RDA, which people have asked for, would require a new editing process as RDA has been designed as an online product. Pricing The pricing for RDA has not yet been determined, but we understand that the publishers are looking at a range of options, taking into account factors such as the size of libraries, consortial licences, etc. It is not known if there will be a free trial period. We understand that the Library of Congress hopes to incorporate it into Cataloger's Desktop, but this is unlikely to happen at initial release. International activities RDA list - remains active with discussion of the potential impact of RDA on catalogues and cataloguing US National Libraries RDA Test The test period will begin after the test partners receive access to RDA Online. There is no indication at present that this will be before official release so we assume December 2009 Test Days 1 through 90: Test partners use this three-month period to become familiar with the content of RDA and with navigating RDA Online. Test Days 91 through 180: Test partners produce records in the test and share them with the US National Libraries RDA Test Steering Committee. Post-Test Days 1-90: The US National Libraries RDA Test Steering Committee analyzes the results of the test and prepares its report to the management of the three national libraries. After Post-Test Day 91: The report is shared with the US library community. MARC Proposals to cover new fields and subfields to accommodate RDA have been approved, but are not yet live in MARC. New fields developed for content type carrier type and media type (replacing General Material Designation). Subfields apply in a number of fields, including relationship designators that can be added to name headings. Some of these have been approved and we expect them to be published in the October 2009 MARC update. NLNZ activities 1. Monitoring lists and posting to CatSig 2. This work is now complete and the new standards for cataloguing to the National Union Catalogue are completely up-to-date. They reflect the latest developments in international cataloguing standards and best practice. In addition they also include the requirements for OCLC Cataloguing Standards and the OSMOSIS Service. Whether you use the National Union Catalogue services, OCLC services for WorldCat or your own library catalogue, they will help your library create good catalogue records. TPSAC is keen that New Zealand libraries and cataloguers start using the new standards. To help you with this the revised standards are available on a wiki developed by the Expert Working Group especially for New Zealand cataloguers. The wiki provides: · information about NUC and partners · the new NUC catalogue standards · latest news and events · quality in cataloguing · an interactive space to receive updates, comments or ask a question. In search of spare copies of DDC

I have 64 students in my cataloguing class this semester (a record!) and we are short of copies of DDC. If any library has any that they no longer require, the students and I would be most grateful if we could have them - either as a long-term loan (until mid November) or permanently. The Open Polytechnic library has 29 sets, and some students use their own libraries' copies, but there is still a short-fall. As planned at the May meeting, the group focused on some new headings requested in the area of health. There is one more meeting of the group planned before Christmas and the thesaurus will be updated with all 2009 changes in early 2010. At the 2009 LIANZA Conference there will be a workshop looking at the future development of the headings. We really want to generate some discussion so we've set up a blog to ask for your opinions on some of the big issues. Would you like to attend this year's LIANZA conference - for free?? CatSIG, LIANZA's Cataloguing Special Interest Group, is offering sponsorship for one member to attend the LIANZA Conference 2009, He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. The conference will be held at the Christchurch Convention Centre, from Monday 12th to Wednesday 14th October. Sponsorship will cover the registration fee and up to $500 for travel and accommodation costs. To apply, please write 1-2 paragraphs stating your reasons for applying for sponsorship, the year you last attended a LIANZA conference, your background and work experience, and the insights and learning you expect to gain from attending. You should also provide written confirmation from your employer that, if successful, you will be given leave to attend. You must be a CatSIG member to apply (or be willing to become one). A reminder that CatSIG will be holding another round of TMQ workshops in September and October 2009. *If you would like to attend Book Blitz 1 or 2 in Wellington, please register by August 8 2009. *If you would like to attend Book Blitz 1 in Auckland or Book Blitz 2 in Dunedin, please register by September 25 2009. Book Blitz 1 (4 days) A beginner’s workshop on bibliographic description, providing access points, and copy cataloging. Covers the "easy" cataloguing rules. Highly valuable for experienced copy-cataloguers, and those with some experience in original cataloguing. Wellington September 8-11, Mercure Hotel Wellington, 345 The Terrace. Participants are expected to have completed Book Blitz One, and will need to re-use the textbook for the course.
