Holdings 852 $2 Code list

Hallo Cataloguers, Does anyone know where I can find a code list for values to go in the $2 subfield of the 852 field in a holdings record, if I were to use the first indicator "7" e.g. 852 7_ $b CMap $h 830 $2 (Boggs & Lewis) or am I completely on the wrong tack as far as the usage of this goes? Trouble is, there is no value in the first indicator list for Boggs and Lewis. We've been (ouch!) using "1", the Dewey code as the nearest thing. Cataloguing Advice Needed in Mexico

Hi there, I'm a New Zealand librarian currently living in Mexico City. I recently started working for a company that sells e books and e book software to libraries in Latin America (the Overdrive software that Auckland City Libraries has). Part of my job is to create MARC records for the e books that the company sells via Overdrive. I'm relatively new to cataloguing, and as there are no other librarians here in the company, I'm wondering if someone on this list would be kind enough to help me with a query relating to the cataloguing of e books (more specifically field 533). I've searched the internet but can't find an exact answer to my question. If there is someone out there who has experience in cataloguing e books, and would be willing to help me with a (very brief!) question, (or can advise me who I might approach), I would love to hear from you at kinnes(a)librisite.com. LIBRARY BIBS CLEANUP

Hi All, We would like to hear from anyone who has had a library database cleanup. We are interested to find out what you did, how you did it and what is your maintenance programme. There about 135,000 bib records on our database created over a period of time. Some records are not quite consistent with the international standards. What we aim to achieve is a high standard of bib records on our database and name and subject authority files consistent with Library of Congress standards. We are currently on Horizon. The cleanup is planned to satisfy immediate requirements and also prepare the database should we need to move the record to a different system in future. Information about access to the survey pages was sent on Thursday (6 Dec.) to individuals who have previously indicated their willingness to participate. If you did not receive the survey's access information last week - and you are using or have used the FONZ and/or SONZ thesauri for any purposes, or have chosen another option instead of FONZ and SONZ - please contact me (dan.dorner(a)vuw.ac.nz <mailto:dan.dorner@vuw.ac.nz> ) and I will arrange for your access to the survey. Or if you know someone else in your organisation (e.g., cataloguers, indexers, portal builders or website managers) with relevant experience with these thesauri please ask them to contact me to obtain the access information. The National Library is pleased to advise progress in two areas of OCLC service enhancment to subscribers. * FirstSearch users have reported receiving the Error message: “The number of simultaneous users for this authorization has been exceeded”. National Library confirms that Te Puna subscribing libraries are entitled to unlimited usage of FirstSearch base package. We have contacted OCLC about this and are pleased to let you know that this message will no longer appear on your screens. If you find otherwise please contact us. * The daily data synchcronisation between National Library and OCLC is now well underway. While National Library has received and loaded holdings and records from those libraries choosing to use OCLC Connexion software since 1 July 2007, we were unable to send daily files of records and holdings from Te Puna until the National Union Catalogue was loaded to WorldCat. Synchronisation of holdings on Te Puna and OCLC WorldCat: a Progress Report (message also posted on Te Puna-L) 4 Oct 2007 The National Library is pleased to report that over the last week significant progress has been made in reaching the agreed ideal of a daily exchange of data between the National Library and OCLC. What has happened already? The National Union Catalogue was loaded to WorldCat in June 2007. As a consequence, New Zealand library holdings are visible either via WorldCat or google searches. While that was an excellent first step, both parties had anticipated that by now there would be complete synchronisation of information in the two databases. What happened to cause the delay? Of that first load, OCLC wished to look further at 116,330 unresolved bibliographic records that have delayed the Te Puna gap load to WorldCat (i.e. records and holdings from July 2007 to date). OCLC has worked with these records to improve the match/load process and late last week reported that 107,,600 had been loaded : the remainder will follow shortly. Once this is done the gap load to WorldCat will take place and from that point on we will be able to exchange data on a daily basis: the target we are both working towards. We acknowledge that this delay may have caused a disruption to preferred workflows in some libraries, so look forward to having the situation resolved. Those libraries that have reported their records/holdings directly to WorldCat will be pleased to hear that daily loads to Te Puna have been in place since 1 July this year. Next phase for Māori Subject Headings

In the last year the cataloguers at National Library have been, when appropriate, adding Māori Subject Headings (MSH) to records for new material being acquired for the National Library collections and to new records created as retrospective conversion continues on the older, but high demand areas of the collection. The intention in doing this is to not only add headings for the NLNZ collections, but also to build a body of records for others to copy to save some time. The MSH Project Team working with CatSig and supported by the MSH Governance Group also organised a series of workshops earlier in the year to build cataloguer’s awareness of how to use MSH and to encourage people to go back to their libraries and work on their own collections. Much of that work drew on the experience of the National Library cataloguers in having already spent some time adding MSH. In all that has been done in the last year the purpose has been to get cataloguers around the country using MSH and through that use, identifying where the gaps are. We are delighted that many cataloguers have started using the MSH list and are identifying gaps where there is no appropriate heading to use for items in their collections. If you have not already notified us of these gaps, please could you send them to reo(a)natlib.govt.nz by the end of August so that we can plan the work for the next phase. We have always acknowledged that the first phase aimed to provide a core of terms to be used, but was never expected to be exhaustive. However the next phase needs to ensure that it is developing terms for which there is an existing demand. We have already had many proposals for new terms sent through to the National Library, but we hope to receive more. Heritage Collections Cataloguer Dunedin Public Libraries invites applications for the position of Heritage Collections Cataloguer. This is a full time, fixed term position for ten months from September 2007 until July 2008. Dunedin Public Libraries' Heritage Collections are significant cultural assets, highly regarded for their literary and historical merit both in New Zealand and around the world. Sir Alfred Hamish Reed's original donation includes the works of Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson, as well as books about printing history. Later bequests include writings by Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and the Farjeon Family. The material is mainly published works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. We are looking for someone to create full descriptive cataloguing records online with appropriate access points to meet the needs of current and future users, both local and international. Our ideal candidate will have experience of cataloguing heritage materials in an online environment with a sound knowledge of relevant standards and tools. They will be scrupulously attentive to detail and have an empathy with rare materials. They will research doggedly and effectively to resolve bibliographic and authority problems. A background in the Humanities is strongly preferred. Specialist subject knowledge relating to one or more of the Libraries' heritage collections would be very desirable. National Library/OCLC Key Message No 2 This is the second Key Message about additional services being offered to Te Puna subscribing libraries. The first message looked at ways in which WebCat users can now save records from remote gateways directly into Te Puna. Several libraries have now succefully started using this option. Today’s message looks at the Registration process and what you will need to do if you want to start using either OCLC cataloguing software or accessing FirstSearch from Monday 2 July. Key Message No 1 New WebCat development launched

Good afternoon Over the next few weeks National Library will send out a series of key messages about the new services which your library, as a Te Puna subscriber, is encouraged to use. Today we talk about the WebCat development that was so well-received at the recent Road Shows up and down the country WebCat now has the ability to save records from remote databases to Te Puna when the relevant record is not found in Te Puna. You can then add your library’s holding and retrieve records as you currently do. This new WebCat functionality was expressly developed by National Library to support the OCLC initiative, as a way of providing New Zealand libraries with access to a greatly extended range of bibliographic records. For contractual reasons links to WorldCat will not be available until 1 July, but we are pleased to let you have a preview of the functionality by providing links to two other databases unhindered in this way. For those who would like to look at how this will work you can now save records from: · National Bibliographic Archive · Libraries Australia Bibliographic Database · Others will follow You can either go into Te Puna and trial it for yourself or look at some screen shots at http://subscribers.natlib.govt.nz/news/future.htm The click on WEBCAT GATEWAY DEVELOPMENT Points to note: New buttons are labelled: o REDO your search on OCLC WorldCat (next to search button - if your search returned no results) o Import from Gateway (Far left on top toolbar) o Save this record to the NBD (immediately above the Detailed/MARC view of the record) When you are in a remote database the screen is coloured slate grey and blue, and a message about which database you are using is displayed at the top of the result set You will know when you have been successful in saving the record from the remote database of your choice when you are back with the familiar pink and blue WebCat colour scheme. OCLC initiative: mid-May progress report

Good afternoon Te Puna users (this message is posted on TePuna-L; nz-libs and CATSIG) Thank you to those librarians who have sent the National Library questions about the OCLC initiative. Last week was a bumper crop. If you, too, would like to find the answers to such questions as: * If we update any serial holdings in NUC, will we also have to amend them in OCLC? * Will OCLC be set up as a gateway through Te Puna like ABN or will we access OCLC independently via the Connexion Client/Cat Express etc? * How do I find out my library symbol on OCLC and what happens if I want different holdings shown on WorldCat to the NUC? you will need to go to the latest FAQ ( http://subscribers.natlib.govt.nz/news/future.htm ) for the answers If your question has not yet been posed please get in touch with either Ruth Miller (ruth.miller(a)natlib.govt.nz)or Sarah Barnett (sarah.barnett(a)natlib.govt.nz) What else is happening? On Thursday 17 May a number of Wellington librarians have kindly agreed to form a working group to review the documentation that will be supplied to libraries as part of the June OCLC Roadshow. The Road Show will promote the agreement, answer any questions and help libraries decide on what cataloguing workflow will be best for them. Cataloguing Workshops August-September 2007 The CatSIG Committee is pleased to announce details of the 2007 TQM workshops. This year we will be holding our workshops around the dates of the LIANZA Conference so that our trainer from TQM Inc. can attend the conference. CatSIG is making a firm commitment to the Dunedin area by holding the two TQM Introductory level workshops in Dunedin. Unlike in 2006 when we had to cancel the workshops at short notice, these workshops will go ahead bearing in mind unforeseen eventualities. Colleagues Seen the advert for the CatSIG seminar? Still confused about RDA? This has just been announced: There has been a major agreement that the RDA and Dublin Core communities will work together in the following ways: * develop a formal RDA Element vocabulary (probably following the DC Abstract Model) * develop an application profile of RDA for Dublin Core using FRBR and FRAD * use RDF Resource Description Framework) and SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organisation System) to disclose RDA vocabularies To quote Karen Coyle "This is truly an amazing development, and I think it begins a new phase in our profession." OCLC Initiative

Good afternoon (also posted on TePuna-L, CatSig, and nzlibs) National Library is pleased to report that we are approaching a significant milestone with the National Library /OCLC partnership arrangement. The initial load of the National Union Catalogue to WorldCat will be exported from the Library within the week. With this in mind, we advise that this load (and all subsequent ones) from National Library to WorldCat will reflect holdings at branch symbol level. National Library has provided OCLC with a list of all Te Puna libraries' symbols for OCLC to profile and assign an OCLC identifier to. This means that your branch library will also have a separate identity on WorldCat.org that reflects the way holdings in the National Union Catalogue are currently displayed. CatSIG Professional Development Seminar, July 2007 CatSIG is pleased to announce a one day seminar with an exciting and varied programme of speakers. The Committee is delighted to announce that Deirdre Kiorgaard, Director, Bibliographic Standards and Strategy, National Library of Australia and Chair of the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules will be our key presenter. Ms. Kiorgaard will give two presentations on the JSC's work on RDA as well as a demonstration of how FRBR fits into the model. This will be the only opportunity New Zealand librarians and interested parties will have to hear about these developments before the publication of RDA in 2009. The Committee has achieved a coup in attracting Ms. Kiorgaard whose presentations will be of interest to a wide community and we encourage you to attend. Information architecture is a developing discipline that has been defined as the construction of a structure, or the organisation of information. This includes using taxonomies, tags, faceted classification and folksonomies.
