The University of Auckland Library The University of Auckland Library has a vacancy for a cataloguer to perform copy cataloguing and simple original cataloguing as part of a professional team. Library Auckland Applicants should have a degree and library qualification, plus familiarity with the following basic cataloguing tools: MARC21, AACR2, LCNA, LCSH, DDC22. Experience in using Te Puna and Voyager databases would be an advantage. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential, as is competence in the use of computer applications and databases. An interest in new developments in information technology relating to cataloguing is also sought. A good standard of English is needed, and knowledge of other languages would be an advantage. This position would also suit someone who is newly qualified or almost finished the library qualifications, as excellent training will be provided. Announcement - Maori Subject Headings Seminars

Colleagues On behalf of CatSIG, Bibliographic Services, National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa and Te Rōpu Whakahau I invite you to attend a seminar on Māori Subject Headings and their use in resource description. This is the first time such a seminar has been held and will introduce valuable new knowledge to all those involved in the description and care of Māori material. An extensive knowledge of Te Reo is not required. The programme will cover: Introduction to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku/Māori Subject Headings Cataloguing Māori language materials Assigning terms from Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Assigning terms from the Iwi/Hapu names list You are welcome to bring examples of problems or issues to discuss. All the seminars will begin at 9.15 a.m. and finish at approximately 4 p.m. Morning and afternoon tea, and lunch will be provided. There is no cost for the seminars. Places are limited so an early response would be beneficial. Item type/loan period

Hi We're puzzling over our item types at the moment as part of our Voyager migration process: If item type is about loan period, why are we using material type wording to describe them instead of terms related to duration like '3 day loan' '1 week loan' ? When patrons (and staff) want to limit their searches, they are often confronted by a set of choices in Material Type (taken from the leader) and Item Type which look almost identical. As a user in the past I have been puzzled when I have selected 'book' from item type in order to exclude serials, videos, etc and not found the title I was expecting because (as I (think I) understand now) the item was not a 'book,' ie normal loan period, but a reference item which did not fit in the 'book' category. I would be interested to hear why libraries have persisted with this terminology instead of using loan period terminology. If anyone is aware of any libraries which are using loan period descripors or a combined terminology (eg 3 day loan books, 3 day loan serials) instead, I would be very interested in hearing of those. Hi We are looking at migrating our database from a DRA system to Voyager next year. We are looking at options for producing a file of authority records that match our bibliographic records, including the possibility of sourcing these from Te Puna or another agency. I'm told the Te Puna option is quite expensive, so we would be interested to hear of any library's experiences of other options, including costs, logistics and data quality. I am studying cataloguing part time and am preparing a report on the pros and cons of cataloguing websites and including them in library catalogues. I was wondering if anyone would mind letting me know if they catalogue websites for their libraries and any problems they have, such as on-going maintenance, sites disappearing etc. Your opinions on the usefulness of having the sites available on the OPACs would also be interesting, if thats not asking too much.
