Latest National Library of New Zealand Policy Statements available in the new RDA Toolkit

Tēnā koutou/Greetings to you all, The National Library of New Zealand has loaded a second test set of Policy Statements to the RDA Toolkit. Following the December 2022 release, these are now visible at: https://access.rdatoolkit.org/. What Policy Statements are included? Following our successful load of Policy Statements for the Manifestation entity for the September 2022 release of the Toolkit, we have now added Policy Statements for Agent, Collective agent, Corporate body, Family, Person, and Timespan entities. Our aim is to have Policy Statements at every element in the RDA Toolkit plus at all options on Entity and Guidance pages. If you don’t see any Policy Statements on a page, it simply means we didn’t include them for this test load. Where are the Policy Statements? You can explore our Policy Statements in the Toolkit via the link in the Policies tab or by selecting ‘NLNZ PS’ from the menu at the top right of any of the element pages. If the NLNZ Policy Statements don’t appear in the list, you may have to update the settings in your Views. What about supporting documentation? Throughout the NLNZ Policy Statements you’ll see references to the NLNZ Guidance. This is a document to support cataloguers to use the NLNZ Policy Statements in conjunction with the RDA Toolkit, similar to the Metadata Guidance Documentation<https://aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.loc.g…> produced by the Library of Congress and Program for Co-operative Cataloguing (LC-PCC). Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Māori Metadata new and changed terms update - Whiringa-ā-rangi/Noema/November 2022

Kia ora The latest collection of new and changed Ngā Upoko Tukutuku headings are now available for use on the National Library website.<https://natlib.govt.nz/librarians/nga-upoko-tukutuku> These are the product of our recent Zoom hui, so it’s wonderful to be able to share these. We’d also love to have more requests to work on - tukua mai ōu whakaaro mō ngā ingoa me tāpiri anō ki te pae tukutuku! Sending in requests is a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Suggestions in English where you don't know a Māori term are just fine. Please get those suggestions rolling in and we'll add them to our worklist. As Te Whakakaokao has created a large number of new terms since the previous release, the notes below only represent a selection of the changes – please explore the website<https://natlib.govt.nz/librarians/nga-upoko-tukutuku> for the full list. Details of the Whiringa-ā-rangi/Noema/November 2022 release Death is an integral part of the cycle of human existence, and Te Whakakaokao has created new terms that relate to this domain. Kaikauhoa has been added to convey the concept of pallbearers, while Whakatakataka tūpāpaku may be used to describe funeral directors. The term Whakatahe refers to miscarriages, stillbirths, and abortions. Returning to the world of light, two new top terms have been created to express significant new concepts that did not align with any of the top terms in the previous structure. Whakaruruhau is an all-encompassing term for all aspects of shelter, whether tangible or intangible. It spans topics ranging from Moenga (Beds and bedding) to Wharau (Temporary dwellings and shelters). A related but different top term Hangatanga has been created to describe physical constructions that are connected to the land and are built by humans rather than naturally formed. Narrower concepts of Hangatanga include the new term Arawhiti (Bridges) and existing term Whare (Buildings). Love was another significant concept explored in this release. This is a complex area in Te Ao Māori, with many different terms in use for specific kinds of love or in particular contexts. After much discussion, the term Aroha was added to convey the idea of love expressed as an emotion, encompassing charity, passion, compassion, care, empathy, sympathy and affection as well as romantic love. While this term may seem very broad in application, this is consistent with the scope of Aroha within mātauranga Māori ways of knowing. Te Whakakaokao has also clarified the structure linking the existing terms Pou rāhui, Pou whenua, Poupou, Poutāhuhu, Poutokomanawa, Poutuarongo and Tohu maumahara. The broader term Pou was created to describe the general category of pou as upright posts intended to be anchored in the ground or attached to a structure. It may be applied as a generic term representing all kinds of pou when a more specific term is not available. The new term Petihana Reo Māori was created to describe the 1972 petition to recognise and revitalise te reo Māori. This is very timely in the context of the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of the Petihana Reo Māori to Parliament. While Te Whakakaokao generally does not create terms for documents such as petitions, appropriate headings in other thesauri are lacking and the new term offers much needed access. We have added a range of topics which may be useful for resources describing traditional or contemporary clothing, sewing, weaving or textile arts. These include: Pākē kārure (a waist or shoulder garment made from long strands of twisted muka), Tui paparangarua (Quilting), Whakatipu (Rain capes), Patui (Bone or wooden needles), Ngira (Contemporary sewing needles), Pūrere tuitui (Sewing machines) and Tohunga raranga (Weavers). On a related note, the term Hīnātore was also created. While Hīnātore literally refers to phosphorescent light, it also describes inspiration or a creative spark in the context of artistic or inventive processes. Finally, as a taster for the many other interesting additions in this release, you will see new terms for Akoranga koiri (Physical education), Kaipuke (Ships), Kurī ārahi (Guide dogs), Matawā (Clocks), Moenga (Beds and bedding) and Papa tākaro (Playing fields). These are the product of our recent Zoom hui, so it’s wonderful to be able to share these. We’d also love to have more requests to work on - tukua mai ōu whakaaro mō ngā ingoa me tāpiri anō ki te pae tukutuku! Sending in requests is a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Suggestions in English where you don't know a Māori term are just fine. Our next hui will be in June and July 2022, so please get those suggestions rolling in and we'll add them to our worklist. Training opportunities in 2022 If you haven’t already enrolled in the 2022 combined Mātauranga Māori and Tukua workshops, there are still places available for the online training hui in July and October. The programme will be free of charge in 2022, so this is the perfect time to attend! Details of the Hune/Pipiri/June 2022 release We have added a number of terms which may be used to describe taonga in library and archival collections. These include Tokotoko (Tikanga tuku iho), ceremonial staffs which may also be used as walking sticks and Papa hou, square or rectangular carved boxes for holding treasured items. Terms have also been created for Kumete whakairo (Carved food bowls with lids), Kumete (Food preparation containers) and Ipu (Bowls and Containers). On a related note, a new term has been added for sculpture, Tāraitanga, while Taputapu whakairo refers to carving tools. The terms relating to jewellery, adornments and personal items have been clarified and expanded. The new term Taonga whakarākei has been added as a collective term for adornments and body ornaments worn to signify status, leadership and whakapapa, or at significant events. It does not include necklaces and earrings, which are instead classed with Whakakai (Jewelry). Narrower concepts of Taonga whakarākei include Tāpeka (Diagonal shoulder belts or sashes), Tīpare (Headbands) and Heru (Combs). As Heru have a functional as well as a decorative purpose, Heru also sit under the broader term Taputapu, which encompasses utensils, property and equipment. Please note that at the time of this release we are aware of an issue with the Taonga whakarākei display that means the heke (narrower terms) are not displaying correctly. This will be corrected during the next release, but in the meantime the relevant narrower terms mentioned above are all accessible via search or alphabetical browse. Some of the terms relating to Tangihanga have been revised and expanded. Kirimate may be used to describe mourners while Kahu whakatere refers to burial wraps and shrouds, predominantly woven from harakeke. We have added new terms to describe buildings and structures in both historical and contemporary contexts. These include Kāuta (Cookhouses and kitchens), Wharau (Temporary shelters) and Tēneti (Tents). Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Māori metadata new and changed terms update - Hakihea/Tīhema/December 2021

The latest collection of new and changed Ngā Upoko Tukutuku headings are now available for use on the National Library website<https://natlib.govt.nz/librarians/nga-upoko-tukutuku>. Te Whakakaokao has recently shifted to a sequence of one-day Zoom hui rather than two day in person events. This change has been very productive so we'd love to have more requests to work on - tukua mai ōu whakaaro mō ngā ingoa me tāpiri anō ki te paetukutuku! Sending in requests is a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Suggestions in English where you don't know a Māori term are just fine. Our next hui will be in February and March 2022, so please get those suggestions rolling in and we'll add them to our worklist. Training opportunities in 2022 If you haven’t already enrolled in the 2022 combined Mātauranga Māori and Tukua workshops, there are still places available for the hui in Whangārei, Rotorua, Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington and Ōtautahi/Christchurch. The programme will be free of charge in 2022, so this is the perfect time to attend! Details of the Hakihea 2021 release The Covid-19 pandemic has continued to dominate the landscape and Te Whakakaokao has received a number of requests for coronavirus-related subjects. We have added a number of new access points to reflect terms that are in common usage. These include: Kāhui rāhui (Bubbles (Public health)), Kano ārai mate (Vaccines) and Tuku kano ārai mate – the latter describes the actual process of vaccination. The term Taratahi may be used for managed isolation in a public health context while Tū tīrara refers to social distancing. Noho rāhui has been added to convey the concept of lockdowns. On a more positive note, we created the new term Whare hauora for health and wellness centres, including iwi- and marae-based health centres. There is now a term for forest regeneration and restoration as well as several terms relating to communities and community activities. These include terms for diversity, Kanorau, and Wawata, which may be applied to describe individual or community aspirations. The new term Kaupapa Māori may be used for research applying a te ao Māori perspective. We have clarified the relationships relating to marine mammals. The scope of Tohorā has been adjusted so that this now refers to Southern right whales and baleen whales, with a note that outside the context of Ngā Upoko Tukutuku the term Tohorā is often used generically to mean all whales. A new term, Parāoa (Wēra) has been created to specifically apply to Sperm whales. In this context, terms for Whaling, Patu tohorā, Whalers, Kaipatu tohorā, Sealing, Patu kekeno, and Sealers, Kaipatu kekeno were also created. Puaka has been created as the Kāi Tahu reo ā-iwi term for the star Puanga. Iwi and hapū of Whanganui, Taranaki, parts of the Far North and parts of the South Island celebrate the rising of Puanga/Puaka as the start of the new year. A number of useful terms were created in the context of describing historical photograph collections at Auckland Council Libraries. These include Pōtae (Hats), Parau (Ploughs), Tarapu (Carriages), Umu (Ovens), Whata (Food storage) and Kāmera (Cameras). These are great examples of how Ngā Upoko Tukutuku can also be applied to non-book collections. There are also new and revised terms which may be useful in an educational context. The new term Tuhinga auaha mā ngā tamariki can be used to identify poetry for a younger audience. The existing term Pakiwaituhi may now be applied to animated films and media as well as graphic novels. This term references the pathway a waka makes on the sea or on river, literally carving the water to shape the narrative. There have also been changes to several related terms. Survey on use of Library of Congress subject headings in NZ libraries

The goal of this research is to capture what librarians and libraries do at a local level. Kia ora all, Thank you to all of those of you who attended the first CatSIG Talks for this year today. Please find below the convenors report. Convenor’s Report for the year 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021 The Committee The committee members for the past year were Tamsyn Bayliss, Anoushka McGuire, Sue McMillan, and Chris Todd. Chris and Anoushka are the CatSIG representatives on the ORDAC committee. Everyone has agreed to remain on the committee for another year. Membership Based on the current membership list received from LIANZA, CatSIG has 146 members (compared to 136 in May 2020). I am pleased to see the number of CatSIG members increasing again after declining over the last couple of years. Activities CatSIG Talks (October/November 2020) – 107 people registered for the Zoom session. It was well-received by the people who attended. Thank you to all the presenters who took the time to share their knowledge Catapult : newsletter of the LIANZA Cataloguing Special Interest Group<http://describenz.squarespace.com/new-page-1/> has continued to be published regularly and made available on the DescribeNZ section of the LIANZA website. Sara Sladwick from the University of Auckland has compiled this year’s issues. We appreciate her contributions to keeping this newsletter going. We welcome any articles or cataloguer profiles as this helps to make Catapult a success. If we continue to have problems receiving content from the cataloguing community, we will need to reassess how many issues we publish a year. The other option is to look into different ways to keep the cataloguing community up to date. DescribeNZ All the content on the DescribeNZ wiki has been moved to a section on the LIANZA website. This has brought us into closer alignment with LIANZA. Budget LIANZA budget requirements have changed, and they require a neutral budget for events or a profit. SIGs can choose to be budgeted or unbudgeted SIG depending on the events they plan for the year. CatSIG has had a neutral budget with no incomings or outgoing in this financial year, and we are operating as an unbudgeted SIG. We need to make sure our costs cover our outgoing when we run events. The zoom sessions we have run over the last couple of years has assisted with this. Closing remarks Activities such as organising training and producing Catapult take a great deal of time and effort, and we would not be able to continue these without the hard work of the committee and the support of CatSIG members. Cataloguing maps

Hello all Later this year I will be going through the collection of old maps (mostly local to Hawke's Bay) that we have in our stack with the view of getting them catalogued and therefore accessible for our patrons. I would imagine that some at least would turn out to have full records in Te Puna/OCLC. However, some may require original cataloguing. I don't have any experience of cataloguing maps - only some theoretical knowledge from back when I did my library studies. Does anyone know of short courses or can recommend a book that would give me enough knowledge to do a reasonable effort if some do require original cataloguing? Resources and Suggestions for Cataloguing and Acquisitions Work

Hello everyone, Please ignore my last post. I don’t know why it was scrubbed and uploaded as an HTML attachement. I would like some suggestions on professional resources, as I would love to work in acquisitions, search librarianship, or especially cataloguing in the near future and was wondering if there are any updated textbooks or resources I should look at, meetings or people I could talk to (I understand RDA and MARC have had some updates recently too)? I have copies of Developing Library and Information Center Collections and Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management (2014-2016 editions). I have graduated with the level 5 diploma in library and information studies and an MIS and have recently obtained work in IM/ records management, but I want to keep my interests and options open. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you, Benjamin.

Thursday 7th October 2021, 11am * How and why the Kōtui Cataloguing Working Group creates training videos Rebecca Keenan, Cataloguer, Dunedin Public Libraries Based on Kōtui consortium member requests for training resources, the Cataloguing Working Group (CWG) is creating short training videos, each focused on a specific topic. As always we'd like to hear any new suggestions you may have for the rōpū (group) to consider. These include Tēina, younger siblings of the person described, Tuākana, elder siblings of the same gender, and Tuāhine, referring to sisters of a male. It was important to create specific terms to reflect that there is no acceptable generic translation of the English concepts of brother and sister. A term for friends, Hoa, has also been added. Some new terms may be relevant in the context of schools, libraries and museums. The term Moko tuauri may now be used for dinosaurs, while Tarakihana is a term for tractors and Rererangi applies to aircraft of all kinds. The scope of Iwi taketake has been extended to include ancient indigenous civilizations and Pukapuka kāhui korero (Bibliography) now also encompasses book history and the book trade. As technology evolves, new usages emerge. A term has been created for augmented reality, Ao whakarahi. Also in the field of artistic creation, Te Whakakaokao has developed a term for digital art, Toi matihiko. Te Whakaokao carefully considered a request for terms for Western medicine in the context of the changing usage of the term rongoā. We finally decided to create a new term Rongoā Pākehā for Western medicine and pharmaceuticals. This sits alongside the existing term Rongoā, Māori medicine, reflecting the centrality of mātauranga Māori to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku. The scope of the existing term Kararehe (Animals) has been refined to confirm that this term may be used for all kinds of animals, including birds, fish and insects. This adjustment has led to some changes to the scope notes for other terms, such as Mātauranga kararehe (Zoology), Kararehe kaikino (Animal pests) and Koiora orotā (Pest control). These terms may be used in the appropriate contexts for all kinds of animals. We also now have a term for squid, Ngū. Other new terms may be applied to resources about conservation and the environment. These include Para kore, waste minimisation and Wāhi haumaru kararehe, which may be used for wildlife sanctuaries and refuges. The group has created a number of terms that may be useful in the context of educational resources. Marae ā-kura describes marae that are sited at mainstream schools and provide opportunities for staff, students and whānau to 'live as Māori' within a mainstream schooling context. Puritanga ākonga may be used to describe resources about student retention. Other new terms may be relevant when describing the process or results of research. Tirohanga Māori has been added to convey Māori viewpoints or perspectives while Mātau ā-wheako may be applied to resources exploring lived experiences. A new term has been created for exhibitions of installation art, Toi puni. This fills a long-standing gap in Ngā Upoko Tukutuku as the existing term for art exhibitions, Whakaturanga toi ataata, specifically excludes installations. Also in the field of artistic creation, Te Whakakaokao has created a term for short films, Kiriata poto. The group has received several requests relating to the concept of ‘engagement’. The term ‘Hononga hāngai’ has now been added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku to convey the concept of effective engagement in the context of an equal partnership between peoples and institutions. Other new terms include Pou whenua (Boundary markers), posts which are placed prominently in the ground to mark possession of an area or jurisdiction over it. The term Whare rūnanga, or meeting houses, may be applied in contexts where a whare rūnanga structure has been specifically identified. Finally, Te Whakakaokao has begun to review terms and definitions relating to disability and special education. We have made some changes to the scope notes for Hauā and Hauātanga so that these are defined more appropriately and are discussing further changes. Nā ngā kaimahi o Te Whakakaokao

Who should attend? Catalogers, cataloging policy creators, and cataloging trainers all need to understand how the new version of RDA can work for them. Presenter: Kathy Glennan (she/her/hers) currently serves as the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services at the University of Maryland. She has over 35 years of experience cataloging scores and audio recordings. Since 2005, Kathy has focused on the development of RDA: Resource Description and Access, with a special emphasis on music cataloging instructions. Kathy contributed to the implementation of a new governance model for RDA, including the establishment of the North American RDA Committee, for which she served as a founding member in 2018. Kathy commenced her 4-year term as RSC Chair in January 2019. Kathy has given numerous presentations on RDA, FRBR, LRM, and MARC Formats issues, including four ALCTS webinars relating to RDA.
