Ngā Upoko Tukutuku new and changed terms update - Kohitātea/Hānuere/January 2021

Tēnā tātou The new and changed headings from the Mahuru (September) and Whiringa-ā-nuku (October) Te Whakakaokao hui of 2020 are now available for use on the Ngā Upoko Tukutuku<https://natlib.govt.nz/librarians/nga-upoko-tukutuku> pages of the National Library website. 2020 has been an unusual year and Te Whakakaokao explored new online ways of working in response to the COVID-19 restrictions,. At our ‘Zui’ in September and October we created a number of new terms (including some related to coronavirus) and we also made clarifications and changes to existing terms in response to requests from users. Please see the ‘More information about new and changed terms’ section below for further detail. Tukua mai ōu whakaaro mō ngā ingoa me tāpiri anō ki te paetukutuku! We’d love some requests for new terms! As always we'd like to hear any new suggestions you may have for the rōpū (group) to consider at our next hui in mid-February 2021. New terms include Mate Korona, the general term for coronaviruses, KOWHEORI-19, a specific term for COVID-19 infections and Mate rewharewha urutā, which may be used for all kinds of influenza pandemics. The terms to describe diseases and pandemics have been reviewed, with the creation of a new broader term, Mate hōrapa, for infectious diseases. The scope and meaning of the existing term Mate urutā has also been adjusted to make it clear that this applies to epidemics and pandemics. Te Whakakaokao plans to create terms for concepts such as Contact tracing and Social isolation once it is clear which terms are commonly used. The COVID-19-related pandemic has also highlighted the growing need for terms describing online activities. New terms relating to artificial intelligence (Atamai hangahanga) and video art (Toi rerehiko) have been developed. On a happier note, new terms have been created for Puoro pīauau (Metal music) and Puoro tino pīauau (Heavy metal music). These entries were developed in discussion with the band Alien Weaponry, who look forward to sharing them with the metal community in Aotearoa. According to the band themselves: definitions for the noun pīauau include ‘knife, cutting instrument, iron axe, tomahawk, hatchet.’ This word seems to embody a lot of the aggression and warrior-like elements of metal. Also, in metal circles, a guitar is often referred to as an axe and the sounds can be quite ‘cutting.’ Te Whakakaokao are very grateful to the band for their insightful contribution in this area. A number of existing terms have been clarified. We adjusted the English scope note of Pūmotomoto (Flutes) to explain that this is a type of traditional flute with an angled notch at the top played specifically to unborn children to impart knowledge and wisdom. Other meanings include an opening in the roof of a meeting house, usually near the door, and the fontanelle of the unborn child. The English scope note of Whakaahua (Visual images) has also been adjusted to make it clear that this is an appropriate term to use for photographs. Terms have now been added for fishing reefs, Ngā toka ika, and for fire making, Hika ahi. Hika ahi may be added to describe both the process of fire making and the tools used to make fire. We have received several requests for terms to convey the concept of evaluation. However, most resources in this subject area appear to be research reports describing the results of evaluation research. From a Māori worldview, the term Rangahau seems appropriate and may be sufficient to describe most resources in this domain. Significant change - please check your catalogues Over time we have received several queries relating to the most appropriate term for Rock art. Previously in Ngā Upoko Tukutuku the preferred term was recorded as Taka tapui, but the source of this phrase is unclear and was unfamiliar to the existing Te Whakakaokao members and their contacts. Research established that Te ana whakairo is widely used in this context and would therefore be more appropriate as a term familiar to researchers. We have temporarily retained Taka tapui as a non-preferred term in the thesaurus to facilitate the automatic updating of bibliographic records to the preferred term. Chris Todd We have a vacancy at Wellington City Libraries for an experienced cataloguer who can provide leadership as we continually try to improve access to our collections, maximising their use and improving the customer experience. You will lead our team of cataloguers and processors to ensure the best possible customer access to our physical and online collections, working closely with selectors and other library staff. You will use your experience in cataloguing and information access to assess and implement the most appropriate standards and processes to make our collections accessible by members of the public. With good people management skills, you will guide our Technical Services Team to keep developing, and you will maintain good relationships with the rest of the library network and with our vendors. Your attention to detail and organisational skills will help oversee the flow of new collection materials, as well as sharing responsibility for managing the team within a busy distribution centre. Requirements include a minimum of five years' cataloguing experience and a professional library qualification. A demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff is highly desirable. The role is primarily based at the Collection & Distribution Centre in Johnsonville, but your work will take you across the whole library network. The starting salary range is $76,744-$90,287, depending on relevant skills and experience. Applications close 20 January 2021. One of the papers is on "The reclassification of non-Western art at UCL Library" by Thomas Meehan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pukdl7NNJkA&list=PL1jZ6RAW3dE246cEV1d-YTW9Q… CILIP is the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, the principal professional library association in the U.K. Meehan discusses the Garside classification that they use for art at the University College of London Library. M is the letter for modern art and there are numbers for a dozen or so countries (MF for France, MG for German-speaking countries) and then MX is for everything else, e.g., Africa, Brazil, Latin America, Nigeria, Norway. He and his cataloging and art specialist colleagues developed numbers for the individual countries and continents and added further breakdown for special artists. They used various capabilities of Alma along with Excel and MarcEdit to create class numbers for the 1800 books in the MX portion of the scheme. I found it interesting even though the Garside scheme is unique to UCL. The issues are not unique however. Meehan admits that subject cataloging issues like "Illegal aliens" present more complications. National Library survey of the New Zealand cataloguing community - results available

[Apologies for cross-posting] Kia ora koutou, In 2019 the National Library conducted a survey of the New Zealand cataloguing community. We would like to thank everyone who responded, and particularly acknowledge the many people who provided useful comments. A report of the results of this survey can be found on the reports and research section of the National Library of New Zealand website<https://natlib.govt.nz/librarians/reports-and-research/survey-of-the-new-ze…>. You will see that there are some follow-up actions for the National Library, which we will work on during the remainder part of 2020 and into 2021. This will include working with CatSIG in undertaking some research into the make-up of the current New Zealand cataloguing community, the kind of tools and workflows used and current challenges. This will help us as we move toward the implementation of the new Toolkit for RDA (Resource Description and Access). Information on the RSC Meeting in October 2020

Hello, colleagues. Apologies if you receive this via multiple lists. The following announcement was posted today on the RSC website: The in-person meeting of the RDA Steering Committee planned for October 2020 at the National Library of Israel has been shifted to a virtual meeting format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The RSC thanks the National Library for their invitation and looks forward to holding our annual in-person meeting in Jerusalem at some point in the future. The RSC’s October meeting has been transformed into a two-week virtual meeting (12-15 October and 20-23 October), which will use a mix of asynchronous and video meeting styles. Four video calls will be scheduled during these two weeks for interactive discussions. These four video calls will be staggered across time zones so that members from all regions share the joy of a middle-of-the-night call. Observers are welcome to attend the public portions of the video calls. The agenda items for these calls, as well as the specific dates and times, will be published on the RSC website in mid-September. Observers will be asked to register with the RSC Secretary, and space will be limited. As usual, the RSC does not plan to publish the recordings of its in-person meetings, which are captured for the purpose of creating accurate minutes. We are working from home, but we do that normally anyway. We're compartmentalizing and finding distraction in our work in this very disturbing time. I want to give you a few updates from Library Juice Academy. The first thing to mention is that we're not terribly impacted by what is happening in a business sense. Classes are running normally, and we're available to help with issues that people may have. We have 20 classes listed for April, all of them going ahead as planned. The MarcEdit class is full (two sections), but it is being taught again in August. A number of other classes are almost full, so you might want to jump on it if you're hoping to take one of our April classes. April classes start next Monday. https://libraryjuiceacademy.com/courses.php One April class in particular that I want to promote is the first class in our new series for support staff. We have a slate of ten classes for the ALA-APA Library Support Staff Certification program. The first one we're offering is one of the required courses, the Foundations course. It has a number of improvements over the old site, but it may be wonky in ways that we aren't aware of yet, so if you have feedback for us, please send it. Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Māori Subject Headings Huitanguru/Pēpuere/February 2020 release

Tēnā tātou The new and changed headings from the Hakihea/Tīhema/December Te Whakakaokao/Māori Subject Headings Working Group hui of 2019 are now available for use on the National Library website<https://natlib.govt.nz/librarians/nga-upoko-tukutuku>. As you may have noticed, the look of the site has changed slightly, and there is now a persistent search box that appears on every page within Ngā Upoko Tukutuku. There are also now three extra files on the Ngā Upoko Tukutuku metadata download page,<https://natlib.govt.nz/about-us/open-data/nga-upoko-tukutuku-metadata> so that you can choose to download either the entire thesaurus in your preferred MARC format, or just the new and changed terms. These changes have been implemented in response to user feedback, so warm thanks to everyone who has asked for these changes. Tukua mai ōu whakaaro mō ngā ingoa me tāpiri anō ki te paetukutuku! We’d love some requests for new terms! As always we'd like to hear any new suggestions you may have for the rōpū (group) to consider. It's a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Suggestions where you don't know a Māori term are just fine. He ao te rangi ka uhia, mā te huruhuru te manu ka rere. Ngā kaupapa hou / New terms Atewharowharo – Lungs Hinewai - An atua who is the personification of light misty rain Hipihope – Hip hop Hū - Shoes Kamupūtu – Gumboots Puoro arotini – Popular music Puoro kōrangaranga – Blues Puoro rekereke – Reggae Rāpaki - Wrap-around garments, worn from the waist to the knee Te Ihorangi - An atua associated with rain Waewae – Legs, feet Recent Changes Many of the changes have focused on the area of music. Macrons have been removed from all occurrences of the term Puoro (Music), to restore consistency with recommended orthographical practices. Please note that we have temporarily created ‘see references’ from the equivalent terms with macrons included, in order to minimise bibliographic file maintenance in library catalogues. These references will be removed with the next update, unless they reflect actual usage. New terms that may be useful to describe musical resources include Hipehope (Hiphop), Puoro rekereke (Reggae), Puoro kōrangaranga (Blues) and Puoro arotini (Popular music). The scope note of Waiata tira has adjusted to make it clear that this term may be used to describe both choral group performances in the context of events such as Te Matatini, and notated music for choral group performances. The scope of Oriori has also been significantly clarified to explain that this term should be used for waiata that retell the stories of ancestral journeys, places, whakapapa, pepeha, or significant historical events. It should only be used for lullabies if the content of the waiata fits within this scope. The scope notes for Hopu reo (Sound recordings) and Taonga puoro (Māori musical instruments) have also been adjusted. The term Puoro reo (Instrumental music) has been corrected to Reo puoro, and the hierarchy and scope note adjusted. New concepts in the domain of describing the body and clothing have been created. These include Atewharowharo (Lungs), Waewae (Feet, Legs), Hū (Shoes) and Kamupūtu (Gumboots). The terms relating to Raranga (Weaving), and Kāhahu (Clothing) are in process of being revised to maintain the integrity of the hierarchical relationships within the context of Te Ao Māori. Kia ora, The call for presentations for the CatSIG Professional Development Day is closing at the end of this week, and we’d love to hear from you! Various topics emerged from our recent survey which people would like to hear about. · Are you a special format or serials cataloguer, who would be interested in sharing you knowledge about cataloguing these resources using RDA? · Have you been researching or working with linked data? · Have you been involved in some research or a project around cataloguing or metadata you would like to share? · Would you like to share your experiences using different metadata formats? · Do you have experience managing data sets that would be useful to share with other cataloguers? · Would you like to present on subject headings, general RDA cataloguing or working with born digital? Please let us know what other topics you might be interested is hearing about or presenting on. Presentations can be either hands on workshops or seminars, with sessions being around 40 minutes in length. 5-10 minute lightening talks or a panel session on short updates, changes or other points for discussion will be considered also. Various topics emerged from our recent survey which people would like to hear about. · Are you a special format or serials cataloguer, who would be interested in sharing you knowledge about cataloguing these resources using RDA? · Have you been researching or working with linked data? · Have you been involved in some research or a project around cataloguing or metadata you would like to share? · Would you like to share your experiences using different metadata formats? · Do you have experience managing data sets that would be useful to share with other cataloguers? · Would you like to present on subject headings, general RDA cataloguing or working with born digital? Please let us know what other topics you might be interested is hearing about or presenting on. Presentations can be either hands on workshops or seminars, with sessions being around 40 minutes in length. 5-10 minute lightening talks or a panel session on short updates, changes or other points for discussion will be considered also. While the work for preparing for the implementation of Phase 2 is still ongoing, the PCC Policy Committee (PoCo) has completed its review of the pros and cons of omitting final punctuation in access point fields. Given that final punctuation is not part of authorized access points in authority records, PoCo has decided that omission of final punctuation in authorized access points in bibliographic records should be allowed as well. It was also decided that it would be better to implement this change along with Phase 2 to avoid the need for both participants and tool developers to deal with this matter twice. Beginning January 2, 2020, PCC libraries will have three options regarding the use of punctuation when newly authenticating bibliographic records: 1. Fully punctuate any field when descriptive cataloging form is recorded as "ISBD punctuation included" (leader/18=i) 2. Omit final punctuation when descriptive cataloging form is recorded as “ISBD punctuation included” (Leader/18=i) 3. Omit final punctuation and punctuation between subfields* when descriptive cataloging form is recorded as "ISBD punctuation omitted" (Leader/18=c) * Exception: For MARC fields in ranges 1xx, 240, 6xx, 7xx, and 8xx, only punctuation that separates access points from relationship designators can be omitted. The punctuation within access points should not be omitted. Special note: when updating an existing PCC record, catalogers should follow the punctuation pattern already established in that record. Options b or c are optional, not mandatory. However, I would like to reiterate the benefits of implementing options b or c: creating records with limited punctuation is expected to save time for catalogers, simplify training of new catalogers, make it easier to map data to and from other formats, and allow for an easier transition to linked data or vice versa (e.g., mapping BIBFRAME to MARC). The draft version of these guidelines (that may be subject to change) are now available on the PCC website: http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/PCC-Guidelines-Minimally-Punctuated-MA…. The final version will be posted on December 15, 2019, in preparation for the implementation date of January 2, 2020. In the next few months, we will: 1. Post guidelines and training materials and specifications for automatically removing or adding punctuation as they become available; 2. Request that LC Network Development and MARC Standards Office and bibliographic utilities revise MARC 21 documentation to include examples with limited punctuation; 3. Work with bibliographic utilities and other interested parties to develop tools to automate the process of removal or reinsertion of punctuation. (OCLC macros for adding or deleting punctuation in Connexion will be ready before January 2, 2020.); 4. Encourage vendors, bibliographic utilities, etc., to explore functionality to index and display records with limited punctuation as defined by the PCC; 5. Encourage vendors, bibliographic utilities, etc., to explore functionality to allow their users to easily add or remove punctuation as needed. As stated above, this policy intends to cover the use of punctuation when newly authenticating bibliographic records. Since then, we have been working on the implementation plan. The complexity of implementing all three options outlined in that email (dated 12/12/2018 and included below) at the same time presents more challenges than we anticipated. In addition, there are issues pertinent to access point fields that require more discussion. We believe we should move forward but need to do so in a way that is manageable and will allow us to achieve some consistency. After considering all the possibilities, we have revised the policy which to address punctuation in descriptive fields only. The revised policy will be implemented in phases: Phase 1: Beginning April 8, 2019, PCC libraries will have two options regarding inclusion of terminal periods when newly authenticating bibliographic records: a. Continue current practice (fully punctuated); code Leader/18=i b. Omit terminal period in any descriptive field*; code Leader/18=i *Exception: terminal periods integral to the data (e.g., recorded as part of abbreviations, initials, etc.) should not be omitted. Special Note: when updating an existing PCC record, catalogers should follow the punctuation pattern already established in that record. The guidelines for Phase 1 and a spreadsheet containing all MARC fields that are affected by the new policy are attached to this email. The implementation date for Phase 2 will depend on the following: a. Completion of style guidelines containing instructions and examples b. Completion of specifications for and availability of tools for automatically removing or adding punctuation (e.g., macros for OCLC Connexion Client, etc.) Following these two phases, the Policy Committee will review the pros and cons of omitting final punctuation in access point fields. The work on the limited use of the ISBD punctuation in PCC records began in March 2011. It took many groups’ work to get us to where we are now. To facilitate the implementation, PCC will: 1. Develop and maintain style guidelines for records with limited punctuation; 2. Provide adequate training resources for catalogers and revise PCC documentation to update policies and include examples with limited punctuation; 3. Request that LC Network Development and MARC Standards Office and bibliographic utilities revise MARC 21 documentation to include examples with limited punctuation; 4. Work with bibliographic utilities and other interested parties to develop tools and specifications to automate the process of removal or reinsertion of punctuation; 5. Encourage vendors, bibliographic utilities, etc., to explore functionality to index and display records with limited punctuation as defined by the PCC; 6. Encourage vendors, bibliographic utilities, etc., to explore functionality to allow their users to easily add or remove punctuation as needed. The Policy Committee is in the process of developing a detailed implementation plan which will include the aforementioned style guidelines.
