Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Māori Subject Headings Hereturikōkā/Ākuhata/August release

Tēnā tātou The new and changed headings from the Pipiri/Hune/June Te Whakakaokao/Māori Subject Headings Working Group hui of 2019 are now available for use on the National Library website. As usual, files are also available for download to update copies in local systems. Tukua mai he tono kia waihangatia ai he upoko hōu! We’d love some requests for new terms! As always we'd like to hear any new suggestions you may have for the rōpū (group) to consider. It's a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Suggestions where you don't know a Māori term are just fine. He ao te rangi ka uhia, mā te huruhuru te manu ka rere. Ngā kaupapa hou / New terms Auahatanga – Creativity, innovation Kōkiri - Advocacy Mātātoka - Fossils Mātauranga mātātoka - Palaeontology Punua – Young animals, including birds, fish and marine mammals Reo ōpaki – Informal language Tārai waka – Waka building Tauaro - Opposites Waro (Pūmotu) - Carbon Whakamoemiti – Gratitude, thankfulness, thanksgiving Recent Changes The hierarchy of terms relating to biology and the natural world has been significantly revised and clarified. Pūpū (Molluscs), Tio (Oysters) and Tipa (Scallops) are now Heke (narrower terms) of Ngā uri o Tangaroa (Marine life), and many terms relating to living organisms have been shifted from Pūtaiao (Science) to the more appropriate term of Koiora (Biology). There are a number of new concepts relating to the environment, living organisms and science. These include: Mātauranga mātātoka (Palaeontology), Mātātoka (Fossils), and a term for carbon, Waro (Pūmotu). The last may be especially useful when describing resources that relate to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. A number of terms have been created that may be useful when describing resources for children. These include Tauaro (Opposites), Whakamoemiti (Gratitude), and Punua (Young animals). A new term has been added to describe informal language, Reo ōpaki. Concepts in the domain of economic and political development have been developed further. There is a new term, Kōkiri, which may be used for advocacy, and the term Auahatanga has been created to convey innovation and creativity. A new English see reference guides users from Equality to Mana tangata (Achieved status). The term Ōhanga whanaketanga (Economic development) has been updated to make it clear that it also encompasses the concept of Risk management. Nā ngā kaimahi o Te Whakakaokao

The new RDA Oceania list (rdaoceania)

Kia ora koutou, Apologies if you have already heard this news because you were subscribed to the rdaaust list, but for those who haven’t I’d like to let you know about the recent change to the rdaaust list and to invite you to subscribe to the new RDA Oceania list. The rdaaust list has changed its name to “rdaoceania” and is now an email discussion list for RDA as it relates to the Oceania region. A forum for discussing RDA cataloguing issues, the list is an opportunity to build professional networks, and learn about new products and services related to RDA and its implementation. The rdaoceania list will be used by the Oceania RDA Committee (ORDAC) as the main tool for directly updating the region about RDA. It may also be used by national resource description communities such as the LIANZA Cataloguing (CATSIG) Community and the ALIA Community on Resource Description (ACORD) to communicate information about activities in relation to RDA, such as conferences, training courses and other events that are of relevance to the RDA community in those countries. Training providers offering RDA training are also welcome to advertise their courses on the list. To find out more about ORDAC, please visit the ORDAC website<http://rda-rsc.org/oceania> Please be encouraged to promote the rdaoceania list to your colleagues, particularly colleagues in parts of Oceania outside Australia who are interested in RDA. Instructions for subscribing are at the end of this email and will shortly be available on the ORDAC website. rdaoceania list etiquette rdaoceania is an “unmoderated” list, which means that all posts go directly to the subscribers without going through a moderator. This allows for the free and open flow of discussion on topics of relevance. The list is intended to create a community of practice where all subscribers feel safe to exchange information about RDA and its implementation. This also requires that subscribers take responsibility to ensure that all posts to the list are written in the spirit of this openness, and with respect for other subscribers to the list. ORDAC will monitor the list to ensure that this happens, and take action if it feels that this etiquette is breached. When responding to posts, subscribers should consider carefully whether their response should be addressed directly to the sender of the original post rather than to the whole list. Be aware that simply clicking “Reply” will send your response to the list. If you want to reply to the original sender, you need to change the address in the “To” box to the individual address of the sender of the original email. When posting to discussion lists, it is common for senders to “cross-post” to multiple relevant lists in order ensure that the post reaches as many people as may be interested in the content of the post. This means that a subscriber to multiple lists may receive some emails multiple times. For this reason, cross-posting is usually acknowledged by the sender at the beginning of their email. If you have any concerns about emails that are posted to the rdaoceania list, please direct them to the List Manager rather than to the list itself. The next hui will be held in the middle of this year and as always we'd like to hear any new suggestions you may have for the rōpū (group) to consider. It's a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Recent Changes Terms for the individual stars within the constellation of Matariki have been created, reflecting an increasing number of publications exploring the cultural, historical, and astronomical significance of Matariki. The term for the Matariki constellation has been qualified as Matariki (Tātai whetū) to distinguish this from the individual star Matariki (Whetū). What this means is that you may need to review the use of Matariki in your catalogue where it occurs without a qualifier and decide which is appropriate; National Library will be doing the same. The scope note for Puanga has been refined, and the relationship between Whetū (Stars) and Constellations (Tātai whetū) has been revised. There are a number of new terms relating to the environment and threatened species. These include: Manu māori (Native birds), Momo taketake (Native species), Momo whatungarongaro (Endangered species), Popoto (Māui dolphins), Tūpoupou (Hector’s dolphins) and Terehu (Bottlenose dolphins). The scope and definition of Aihe (Dolphins) has been reworked to guide users to apply narrower terms for specific species of dolphin where appropriate. New terms have been created to describe classical music resources, including Pūoro ōkawa (Classical music), Rāngai pūoro (Orchestras), and Rāngai pūoro tuatini (Symphony orchestras). When describing specific kinds of classical music, multiple terms may be applied. For example, to describe symphony orchestral music, one may add both Pūoro ōkawa and Rāngai pūoro tuatini. Other new terms that will be useful when describing the form or genre of different kinds of resources include: Kōnae ipurangi (Podcasts) and Paerewa (Standards). New Tukutuku (Māori see references) have been added to make terms such as Kōrero nehe (History) more discoverable. There are also some new English see references, guiding users from Broadcasting to Pāpāho (Mass media) and from Allegories to Pūrākau (Traditional literature). The scope of Korowai (Cloaks decorated with black twisted thrums) has been clarified. Western bias in the RDA Toolkit

The international RDA (Resource Description and Access) cataloguing rules are undergoing some significant changes in order to reflect changing metadata standards and the shift towards linked data. The RDA Steering Committee (RSC) is seeking input from indigenous cataloguers around the world to help identify and eliminate areas of Western bias within the language and conceptual structure of the draft rules. We would love to hear from cataloguers who identify as Māori, Pasifika, or other indigenous affiliation, and who would be interested in contributing to this work. These include: Kaihanga uku (Potters), Uku (Pottery), Tā tuhi (Prints), and Tukanga toi (Artistic process). These are accompanied by a group of new terms relating to music and musicians, such as Ariā pūoro (Music theory), Rōpū pūoro (Musical groups), Rakuraku (Guitar), Tira waiata (Vocal groups) and Kaitito (Composers). New terms have been created to describe different types of moving image and audio resources, including Rīpene whakaata (Videotapes), Rīpene whakarongo (Audio tapes), and Pāhotanga mataora (Live broadcasts). Other new terms that will be useful when describing the form or genre of different kinds of resources include: Titonga tōpū (Scores), Whakarāpopototanga (Abstracts), and Pūoro whakaari (Dramatic musical works). The terms that describe the different kinds of programmes have been reworked and clarified, and the existing general term, Hōtaka, has been disestablished. There are now separate terms for learning programmes (Hōtaka (Ako)), broadcast programmes (Hōtaka (Pāpāho)), and social service programmes (Hōtaka (Ratonga ki te iwi)). Some new terms have been created which will be applicable when describing resources in the area of environmental protection: Para (Rubblish), Koiora orotā (Pest control), Kararehe kaikino (Animal pests). A term has been created for Pīwauwau, the alpine rock wren, along with broader terms for alpine birds (Manu rohe maunga), and mountain birds (Manu maunga). What's Next for RDA and the 3R Project?

The RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign Project, better known as the 3R Project, seeks to improve the usability of the Toolkit and to address a range of cataloging issues, including the implementation of the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM). Since the June rollout of the RDA Toolkit beta site, the publishers of RDA and the RDA Steering Committee (RSC) have been collecting community feedback on the direction of both the standard and the website and are still making key decisions that will lead to the completion of the 3R Project. Join a discussion with representatives from the RSC, the North American RDA Committee and ALA Publishing, as they address the community feedback to the beta site, changes coming in September and beyond, and how the North American community can contribute to the continuing enhancement of RDA. Cataloguing fiction intended for children and young adults

Kia ora koutou The National Library of New Zealand is changing its approach to subject headings when cataloguing fiction intended for children and young adults. For many years, we have followed the standards of the Library of Congress in its Children’s and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (previously called the Annotated Card Program), using Children’s Subject Headings (MARC coding 650_1) in bibliographic records for this type of material. We have now decided to stop this practice, preferring instead to use Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) and/or standard Library of Congress Subject Headings with the subdivision "Juvenile fiction" as appropriate. Changes to the Beta RDA Toolkit

Kia ora tātou I just thought I’d point out that there have been some helpful new changes to the Beta RDA Toolkit, live this morning! There’s now a persistent blue button taking you back to the top of the longer element pages, and the rather opaque Detailed, High-level and Parent element groups have been removed (as discussed at the CatSIG seminar yesterday). There have also been some layout changes, with instruction options highlighted more clearly.
