Tēnā tātou katoa We are pleased to announce that Ngā Upoko Tukutuku, the Māori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Māori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. There are 16 new terms that have been added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We welcome requests for new terms. Recent Changes - Āperira/Paengawhāwhā/April 2017 Some new form and genre terms have been created. These include: Pukapuka mapi (Atlases) and Rauemi matua (Primary sources). We now also have a term for Researchers (Kairangahau). The terms relating to relationships have been revised and clarified. Tūhono is now a separate term that describes any form of relationship or connection, and Mārenatanga (Marriage) has been redefined as a narrower term of Tūhono. A term has been added for resilience, Manawaroa. New terms relating to repatriation and the return of cultural and physical remains have been created. These include Whakahoki, a general term for repatriation, Whakahoki koiwi (Repatriation of human remains), Whakahoki taonga (Repatriation of taonga), and Whakahoki toi moko, which is used for the repatriation of toi moko. We now have a term for biosecurity, Te maru koiora. This is used for measures that are taken to stop the spread or introduction of harmful organisms to human, animal and plant life. Two new terms for chisels have been added. Whao is used to describe all-purpose chisels and Uhi is the term for chisels that are used for Tā moko. The scope of the term Kōkiri mana pōti (Suffrage movement) has been clarified. It is designed to enable you to apply international standards in the creation of catalogue records. You will also be able to analyse the international standards and to develop a critical understanding of the contemporary issues affecting cataloguing and catalogue management. This course is run by the Open Polytechnic from July 2016 and is a distance learning course. Question for those using Alma / OCLC DataSync function

Forwarded on behalf of David Church Hello everyone, I am wanting to find out what workflow process you use when cataloguing items from scratch. Do you originally catalogue an item: A- First in your institutional catalogue and then have that new record transferred to WorldCat via DataSync (daily batch mode) OR B - First in WorldCat with Record Manager and then transfer (either item by item or a bulk process) to your institutional catalogue? Our current workflow is A but I am interested in your experience with either. We started with DataSync on 13 October 2016 and transfer of records was completely successful until 23 February 2017. Since then we have had a success rate of 70%. Plus 50 records added to our institutional catalogue before the implementation of DataSync are not yet transferred. So how has your own institution's experience been with either workflow - where have you been happy with it and where do you think it could be improved? CatSIG is offering to sponsor one person to do the following cataloguing course. Beyond the Basics: Cataloging DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and Streaming Videos offer by Library Juice Dates: May 1st to 26th, 2017 This course is designed to help those with basic cataloguing experience become comfortable cataloguing more challenging formats. Participants will learn how to catalogue motion pictures on DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and streaming formats in RDA and MARC through lots of hands-on practice including learning to identify the preferred sources of information to use when determining titles and statements of responsibility, how to handle multiple production companies, distributors, and dates frequently found on these resources, how to determine authorized and variant access points, and how to create accurate physical descriptions that reflect new fields added under RDA. Participants will also learn the primary differences between RDA and AACR2 for audio-visual resources so that they can effectively copy catalogue and enrich existing records. Course Objectives: Understand how cataloguing audio-visual resources differs from cataloguing other formats. Learn how to use and format all necessary fixed and variable fields to create full MARC records for DVDs, Blu-ray, and Streaming video resources. Understand the challenges in classifying audio-visual resources and the most common ways to address these challenges Be familiar with frequently applied Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) for audio-visual resources. Course Structure This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional synchronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment. RDA records for USBs

Kia ora koutou, Aroha mai, my apologies for the tardiness of this email. After asking for assistance with an RDA record for a book on USB a few weeks ago, I was hit with the craziness that is University O Week, add to that the fact that a lecturer ‘commandered’ the item for a couple of weeks and it all combines to mean that I only got a chance to act upon your wonderfully helpful responses yesterday. Attached is a screenshot summary of the main ways to fill in an RDA record, they’re pretty similar but it does show that even the experts disagree sometimes. I particularly found the 347 field examples really helpful. And I’m in favour of 338 Computer chip cartridge over 338 Computer disc as can be seen in the last example. I haven’t included the names of where these examples come from, partly so we can just choose the one that fits each of our institutions best without bias, and also partly (mostly) because I’ve forgotten since I pulled this together weeks ago. MARC punctuation and Māori Subject Headings in National Library records

Kia ora koutou At the recent ‘Tukua’ Māori Subject Headings training workshop, it was noted that some agencies have been downloading National Library bibliographic records with Māori Subject Headings that lack the correct MARC punctuation. We understand this has caused filing and display problems in some OPACs. The problem is associated with Alma, National Library’s library management system. We have just received the good news that ExLibris are working to fix this MARC punctuation problem, which should be resolved by December 2017 – still quite a long way away, but at least we are making progress! Expressions of interest in a 2nd Kiwi Jane-athon in Christchurch

After the feedback from last year's Cataloguer's Day, CatSIG is looking for expressions of interest in the following course so that we can decide what training to provide for the membership this year. Are you interested in taking part in a second Kiwi "Jane-athon" either before or after the LIANZA conference in September in Christchurch? The purpose of the workshop is to catalogue an author's resources with software specifically designed to use RDA: Resource Description and Access (i.e. RIMMF - RDA in Many Metadata Formats). In addition to building practical experience with "native" (not MARC-based) RDA, participants will explore the very real issues inherent in using Resource Description Framework (RDF) statements in aggregated "packages" ready to contribute to the Linked Data world. The first New Zealand workshop used the works of Maurice Gee, but other events have used different authors including Jane Austen, Robert Louis Stevenson and Agatha Christie. USB stick record?

Kia ora koutou, For the first time ever I’m creating an original/copied and tweaked rda record for a USB stick which basically contains a book. We’re shelving it inside a DVD case so we can lock it and shelve it more easily. Does anyone have an example record for this sort of thing? I’ve found a record for the same item which says CD-ROM, but that just seems misleading as it’s a USB. In particular I’m interested in the 300 and 330 fields. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Māori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in Tāmaki-makau-rau. There are 29 new terms that have been added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We welcome requests for new terms. These include Aihe (Dolphins), Arewhana (Elephants), Haututū (Mischief), Karetao (Puppets), Makimaki (Monkeys) and Whakatoi (Cheekiness). Terms have been added which may be used when describing programmes relating to the prevention of violence. These include Hōtaka (Programmes) and Aukati tūkinotanga (Violence prevention). The new term Tangata hara can be used for Offenders or Perpetrators. Te Whakakaokao is currently revising and clarifying the terms relating to gourds. Kōaka (Gourds) has been created as a narrower term of Hue, the term used to describe the gourd plant. New terms have been created to describe gourds which are used as water vessels (Takawai), or floats (Tahā). A term has been added for Raukatauri, or Music therapy. This term is related to Hineraukatauri, the guardian of traditional Māori musical instruments. New terms relating to personal finance (Penapena pūtea) and financial literacy (Whiwhi pūtea) have been created. The terms used to describe genres of published and unpublished materials have been revised and the scope notes clarified. The scope note of Pānuitanga whakatairanga (Ephemera) now includes Leaflets, and we have clarified the scope note for Tā tuhi (Printing). The group has created new terms for Oral histories (Kupu tuku iho), Archival collections (Rua mahara), and posters (Pānui whakaahua). Two new terms have been created to describe the suffrage movement (Kōikiri mana pōti) and petitions (Petihana). Updated Terms of Reference for CatSIG

Good afternoon New Zealand cataloguers, The CatSIG committee would like to share that our updated Terms of Reference were accepted by LIANZA Council at the December meeting, and are now live on the CatSIG site: http://www.lianza.org.nz/catsig These ToR were discussed and approved at the October 2016 CatSIG AGM. The biggest changes are the addition to our statement of purpose which explicitly states that CatSIG will support the development of international cataloguing standards, and the creation of the new key committee roles, representatives to ORDAC (the Oceania RDA Committee), of which there will be up to three. The establishment of ORDAC is part of the recent change in the RSC (RDA Steering Committee) governance structure and will provide an opportunity for New Zealand cataloguers to contribute directly to the development of RDA. We are seeking professionally qualified cataloguers for our growing business and we are offering attractive terms. Work is full-time or part-time and we offer genuinely flexible working hours including school hours and the potential to work some hours from home. Cataloguers at Wheelers are responsible for performing a variety of bibliographic duties in the customers Library Management Systems, including original cataloguing and bibliographic record upgrades of books and DVDs. Cataloguing is done according to national and international practices and standards (RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA and Dewey 23) as well as customer requirements. Cataloguers will function as part of a team of professionals and paraprofessionals to ensure that outgoing materials meet company standards in terms of quality, timeliness and quantity. Barcode scanners

Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Māori Subject Headings Update Whiringa-ā-nuku/October 2016

Tēnā tātou katoa Ka tangi te pipiwharauroa! We are pleased to announce that Ngā Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms this spring. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Māori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in August 2016. There are 11 new terms that have been added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We welcome requests for new terms. These include Pahi (Buses), and Panga (Puzzles). Te Whakakaokao is currently revising and clarifying the terms relating to Tikanga, and Kawa. The scope of Tangihanga (Mourning ceremonies) has been revised, and a new term, Whakanoa, has been created to describe processes or rituals that remove tapu. A new term has been added for Kainga kore, or Homelessness. This is a narrower term of both Āhuatanga pāpori (Social conditions) and Āhuatanga ōhanga (Economic conditions). New terms relating to veterans (Ika a Whiro) and the related atua, Whiro, have been created. Ika a Whiro may be used to describe veterans of both traditional and contemporary conflicts. We now have a term for cradles and bassinets, Wahakura, and have clarified the scope of Kete kawe pēpi, woven baby carriers. Suggestions wanted for new headings to include in Nga Upoko Tukutuku

Tena kotou katoa, Te Whakakaokao (the Māori Subject Headings working group) is calling for more suggestions for new headings to include in Nga Upoko Tukutuku. We're having a hui in early December, so now's the perfect time to scour your shelves or talk to your reference staff about those collection items you couldn't find a good term for. You can suggest the Māori term you think is relevant or just give us the English equivalent, but either way we need to know what the resource is (ISBN and/or OCLC number are great identifiers) so we can take a look ourselves. We're also always interested in any questions you have about existing headings, particularly if you think the scope notes need expanding or if you think something else should be included. Cataloguer's Day change of venue

Apologies for cross posting. We have had to change the location for the Cataloguer's Day. This will be now be held at the University of Auckland, Grafton Campus, Building 502, room B41. The entrance for this building is via building 503 (the main entrance for the Medical and Health Sciences faculty). This is on Park Road, opposite the entrance to the Domain. Once inside, follow the blue line to the end, you need to use the stairs to access the basement lecture theatres, room B41 is on the left. There will be signs up showing you the way. If you are not sure where to go once you get into the building, there is an information desk where you can ask for directions. The Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) is such a development, which is intended to be a replacement for MARC and to serve as a general model for expressing and connecting bibliographic data utilizing Linked Data principles. This workshop gives a brief overview of Linked Data and describes the BIBFRAME Linked Data model and how it compares to other efforts to model bibliographic data, such as FRBR. It also provides an overview of the BIBFRAME vocabulary, which is used to describe bibliographic resources as Linked Data compatible statements. It reviews the development of BIBFRAME to date, looking at tools, such as the MARC to BIBFRAME transformation tool and the BIBFRAME Editor and current experimentation. Learning outcomes: -Understand the BIBFRAME Data Model and how entities used in bibliographic descriptions are related. -Review the BIBFRAME vocabulary, which enables the statements that are made about bibliographic resources. -Explore how MARC data elements are transformed to BIBFRAME classes and properties -Look at tools that are available for experimenting with BIBFRAME. -Review current projects that are experimenting with BIBFRAME. Instructor: Rebecca Guenther has 35 years of experience in national libraries, primarily working on library technology standards related to digital libraries. She has a bachelors’ degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin and a Masters of Science from Simmons College of Library Science. She started her career at the National Library of Medicine as a cataloger and later moved to the Library of Congress. Most of her professional life has been at the Library of Congress developing national and international standards related to metadata, including MARC, MODS, PREMIS, METS, and ISO language codes. She has served on numerous standards and implementation committees, several as chair, is widely published in professional literature, and has given many tutorials, workshops and presentations. She is currently living in New York, working remotely for the Library of Congress on MODS, PREMIS, LC's Linked Data Service, and the Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative. Cataloguers at Wheelers

Join the innovative team at Wheelers, a large New Zealand library supplier providing outsourced selection, cataloguing and processing services. We are recently appointed 2 part-time cataloguers and are still seeking professionally qualified cataloguers for our growing business and are offering attractive terms. Work is full-time or part-time and we offer genuinely flexible working hours including school hours and the potential to work some hours from home. Cataloguers at Wheelers are responsible for performing a variety of bibliographic duties in the customers Library Management Systems, including original cataloguing and bibliographic record upgrades of books and DVDs. Cataloguing is done according to national and international practices and standards (RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA and Dewey 23) as well as customer requirements. Cataloguers will function as part of a team of professionals and paraprofessionals to ensure that outgoing materials meet company standards in terms of quality, timeliness and quantity. At least 3 years recent cataloguing experience is preferred. Experience with original cataloguing would be an advantage but training will be provided. The pay rate is competitive, and will be commensurate with skills and experience. Wheelers is based on the North Shore of Auckland, just off the motorway in Glenfield. In this presentation we will look at what we have discovered about metadata use as part of an ongoing Research Data Management pilot project and some problem areas. We will also briefly discuss discipline-specific metadata standards. Charlotte Christensen Good enough? What makes a record 'good' or 'not good enough'? No cataloguer can do everything, but how do you decide what is important? This presentation will give an overview of how to look at MARC records and assess their value to your own library. Becky Dames Lightning session: Metadata Librarians, the artists formerly known as Cataloguers Lincoln University has embraced shelf-ready titles, ebooks, and the shared knowledge of an ever-improving cataloguing community to allow us to more easily manage our traditional collections and redistribute our traditional cataloguing time. With the Research Archive housing student and academic research, and the Living Heritage site preserving, sharing and connecting our community history, our focus has shifted from creating perfect bibliographic records to raising the visibility of our assets in a global environment. The combination of cataloguing and digital skillsets is key to effective metadata creation in these new environments. This talk explores Lincoln University’s move into digital metadata, where we’ve come from, how we got here, and what we’re planning next. Adam Moriarty Collections Online This talk is an example-rich, practical introduction to Linked [Open] Data (LOD). Using Auckland Museum’s recent Collections Online project and knowledge gained during the recent Paul Reynolds Scholarship, I will present an overview of how this technology can enable collaboration and sharing of data outside your institution. I will highlight the metadata mapping process, workflows and backend technology required for a successful project. Skalk van der Merwe Integrating Music Resources from one Library to another : Using Excel, MarcEdit, the National Union Catalogue and OCLC. A presentation on how we used MS Excel and Marc Edit to create a Marc file using Massey University bibliographic and item data to batch load into Voyager / Alma. Charlotte Christensen, Jean Schutte and Fenella Gordon Roundtable discussion: Remote working Charlotte, who works remotely for the National Library of New Zealand, Jean Schutte (Wheelers Lead Cataloguer for Hamilton and normally working from home in Waiku) and Fenella Gordon (her employer at Wheelers) will discuss their working lives and logistics of cataloguing remotely. In this presentation we will look at what we have discovered about metadata use as part of an ongoing Research Data Management pilot project and some problem areas. No cataloguer can do everything, but how do you decide what is important? This presentation will give an overview of how to look at MARC records and assess their value to your own library. Becky Dames Lightning session: Metadata Librarians, the artists formerly known as Cataloguers Lincoln University has embraced shelf-ready titles, ebooks, and the shared knowledge of an ever-improving cataloguing community to allow us to more easily manage our traditional collections and redistribute our traditional cataloguing time. With the Research Archive housing student and academic research, and the Living Heritage site preserving, sharing and connecting our community history, our focus has shifted from creating perfect bibliographic records to raising the visibility of our assets in a global environment. The combination of cataloguing and digital skillsets is key to effective metadata creation in these new environments. This talk explores Lincoln University’s move into digital metadata, where we’ve come from, how we got here, and what we’re planning next. Adam Moriarty Collections Online This talk is an example-rich, practical introduction to Linked [Open] Data (LOD). Using Auckland Museum’s recent Collections Online project and knowledge gained during the recent Paul Reynolds Scholarship, I will present an overview of how this technology can enable collaboration and sharing of data outside your institution. I will highlight the metadata mapping process, workflows and backend technology required for a successful project. Skalk van der Merwe Integrating Music Resources from one Library to another : Using Excel, MarcEdit, the National Union Catalogue and OCLC. A presentation on how we used MS Excel and Marc Edit to create a Marc file using Massey University bibliographic and item data to batch load into Voyager / Alma. Charlotte Christensen, Jean Schutte and Fenella Gordon Roundtable discussion: Remote working Charlotte, who works remotely for the National Library of New Zealand, Jean Schutte (Wheelers Lead Cataloguer for Hamilton and normally working from home in Waiku) and Fenella Gordon (her employer at Wheelers) will discuss their working lives and logistics of cataloguing remotely. This will also be a chance for a general discussion on the topic, so questions and queries welcome. Cataloguers at Wheelers are responsible for performing a variety of bibliographic duties in the customers Library Management Systems, including original cataloguing and bibliographic record upgrades of books and DVDs. There are 25 new terms that have been added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We welcome requests for new terms. Two new terms have been added: Tokomatua, a general term for groups of any kind, and Kēnge, which can be used for gangsters, organised street or criminal groups. •The terms relating to Huruhuru whenua (Ferns) have been revised to distinguish between the species of Shield fern (Pikopiko), and Pikopiko (Kai), which refers to fern shoots used in cooking. •A new term has been added for Pūmanawa, or giftedness. • The definitions of the terms relating to the movement and migration of peoples have been clarified. Hekenga has been redefined to include both the migration of waka to New Zealand and the internal migrations of iwi or hapū, while the scope of Hūnuku has been clarified to refer to the migration or movement of Māori people in contemporary times within New Zealand, particularly to the big towns. A new term, Tūhura, has been created to describe physical, online and intellectual exploration. •The terms relating to printing, publishing and media have been expanded. Tā tuhi is used for printing, while Momotuhi describes fonts. A term for documentaries, Pakipūmeka, has been added, as have terms for Encyclopedias (Mātāpunenga) and Diaries (Rātaka). •New terms relating to Surveillance (Mahi tūtei) and Terrorism (Mahi whakatuatea) have been created. • We now have a term for Faces, Kanohi. We have also established the corresponding reo-ā-iwi term, Konohi, which is used by the iwi and hapū of Ngāi Tahu and Te Tai Rāwhiti. CatSIG is looking for expressions of interest in presenting at a Cataloguers Day we would like to hold in October around our AGM. Call for Presentations for Cataloguers Day in October

CatSIG is looking for expressions of interest in presenting at a Cataloguers Day we would like to hold in October around our AGM. Topics that came out of list years survey that people would like to hear more about are: * Are you a special format cataloguer, who would be interested in sharing you knowledge about cataloguing these resources using RDA? * Have you been involved in some research or a project around cataloguing or metadata you would like to share? * Would you like to share your experiences using different metadata formats? * Do you have experience managing data sets that would be useful to share with other cataloguers? * With the recent changes to a new library management systems by some libraries, here is an opportunity to share your experiences in cleaning up your data pre or post migration. Please let us know what other topics would you be interested is hearing about? Presentations can be either hands on workshops or seminars, with sessions being between half an hour to an hour in length. Posted on behalf of Sandra O'Dea Email: s.odea(a)ucol.ac.nz<mailto:s.odea@ucol.ac.nz> Good afternoon all, I thought I would share this with you: UCOL's restructuring proposal: All library staff and student support staff roles at the UCOL Palmerston North campus 'are being' disestablished (proposal/consultation phase has begun). The proposal suggests that all library roles be disestablished (there are 10 librarians currently working here). They propose to name the library the 'Knowledge Hub' and create four new library roles - job title: Student Library Advisors, and one leader role - job title: Senior Advisor Knowledge Hub. It appears that our librarian roles are not viewed by UCOL management as professional/specialised/skilled roles (although one slight concession that suggests the library roles are professional, is the requirement for a degree and library qualification in the new job description): UCOL has released the draft job description for the proposed 'Student Library Advisor' role. Most of the current library roles (duties) (i.e. Cataloguer, Electronic, Interloans, Liaison, Acquisition, Systems, Processing, Collection Management, Overdues & Circulation etc.) are to be condensed into the proposed Student Library Advisor role. The Student Library Advisor is also expected to carry out work at the customer service desk; however this not only includes circulation/library duties but Information Technology assistance (e.g. computer logins and printing requirements - Advanced information technology skills is listed as an essential specific experience) - this is because the current non-library Computer Support Assistant role (1 full-time and 1 part-time role/people) is also being disestablished. The Student Library Advisor is also expected to manage other student resources (this could include handling student nursing uniforms, graduation gowns, equipment bonds, trip/travel payments, gym fee payments etc.) - this is because the Student Resource Centre (currently manned by two non-library roles/people) is also being disestablished. Many of the duties listed in the proposed new role description (Student Library Advisor) appears to be liaison based i.e. teaching - providing seminars, online resources, workshops and one-on-one sessions for staff and students; with some of the technical library roles mentioned briefly in a few bullet points.
