Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in September 2015. There are 23 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. Te Whakakaokao is delighted to have completed all outstanding requests as far as possible, and we welcome requests for new terms. Kōrero paki mā te hunga taiohi can be used as a term for works of young adult fiction, while Kōrero pono mā te hunga taiohi refers to young adult nonfiction. · Two new terms relating to technology have been added. Rauemi-ā-ipurangi describes online resources in general, while Pūmanawa tautono refers to software applications, including mobile apps. · A number of terms relating to environmental issues have been added or clarified. Among these are Te mahana haere o te ao (global warming), Huringa āhuarangi (climate change), and Hangarua (recycling). Organic farming and organic gardening have been added as see references to Rongomatāne. · The terms relating to emotions have been extended. Pōuri refers to the grieving process, Mānatunatu describes anxiety or worry, while Pūkatokato defines a state of being desolate, heart-broken, or overcome with grief. · The scope of Ringa kaha has been clarified to refer specifically to land conquest (including the Musket Wars). A new term, Ngā Pakanga Whenua o Mua has been created to describe the New Zealand Wars. · The see references relating to Māmā (mothers) and Pāpā (fathers) have been corrected. The new term Mātua should now be used for parents and parenting. · The scope of Reo irirangi (Radio) has been extended to include radio stations. · The term Kōhurutanga (murder) has been added as a narrower term of Hara, which encompasses crimes and offences. · Two new terms have been added as narrower terms of Hinengaro, the pathway of thought. Whanonga describes behaviour or conduct, while Tinihanga can be used for hoaxes or trickery. We apologise for the absence of macrons. ALCTS webinar: E-Books via the Cataloging in Publication Program Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2015 All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time. Description: The Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program is now accepting e-books from major U.S. publishers to help build the Library of Congress’ collections. This is a major step forward in management of e-book collections at the Library of Congress as the process for ingesting CIP e-books will be used as a model for acquiring e-books from other acquisitions sources. The presentation will discuss all elements of the CIP E-Books Program, including the application process, publisher participation, e-book metadata creation, and ingestion of the e-books into the Library’s Content Transfer System to add to the Library’s collections. Learning outcomes: Attendees will become more knowledgeable about e-book metadata and ingestion workflows in a large library setting and how to identify high-quality pre-publication e-book metadata in bibliographic utilities. Who should attend? Metadata librarians and e-resources librarians of all types of libraries. Presenters: Caroline Saccucci is the Dewey Program Manager in the U.S., Programs, Law and Literature Division. She is also currently the Acting CIP Program Manager and was formerly a CIP program specialist. She is an active member of the American Library Association and serves as Chair of the ALC Public Libraries Technical Services Interest Group and Dewey Section Liaison to the ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section Subject Analysis Committee. Camilla Williams is a Program Specialist in the Cataloging in Publication Program. Her responsibilities include responding to inquiries from publishers and cataloging staff, recruiting and training new libraries and institutions to the ECIP Cataloging Partnership Program, and participating in new automated and metadata initiatives. *Apologies in advance for multiple postings.* ALCTS webinar: The New CIP Data Block: How To Use It For Cataloging Date: Wednesday, October 14, 2015 All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time. Description: In July 2015 the Library of Congress will implement a new layout to the Cataloging in Publication Data Block which appears on the verso of the title page of print books and on the Copyright page of electronic books. The new layout is the result of an analysis of survey results done in 2014 that asked institutions what should be kept, added, or removed from the CIP Data Block to meet the needs of the twenty-first century bibliographic environment. There are numerous changes to the layout including the use of labels to clearly identify the different components within the block, addition of RDA and electronic data elements, and a URL that links directly to the LC catalog for easy download of bibliographic records. This webinar will introduce attendees to the new CIP Data Block, including instruction on how to interpret the elements of the Data Block for cataloging purposes. Learning outcomes: Attendees will become familiar with the CIP Data Block, be informed of its data elements, and learn how to use it to create catalog records. Who should attend? Catalogers in smaller libraries, particularly school, public, small college/community college, small special, and other libraries where the CIP Data Block is still referred to for creation of bibliographic records. Information Management and Services qualification review update

[apologies for cross-posting] Information Management and Services qualifications (including library, archives, records and heritage information) have been reviewed as part of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Mandatory Review of Qualifications at levels 1-6 (i.e., up to but not including bachelors' degrees at level 7). The aim of this NZQA review is to reduce duplication of qualifications and ensure the system is easy to understand, and also to ensure the qualifications meet the needs of the relevant sector. Phase 1 of the review was completed in 2014 following extensive stakeholder consultation, and five qualifications were approved by NZQA for development. Phase 2 development has been done by the IMS Governance Group (https://imsqualreview.wordpress.com/governance-group/) and their three working groups, in consultation with industry. The five qualifications are now available in final draft form. Major stakeholders including professional associations, major employers, education providers and interest groups have been asked to provide feedback on these drafts. Following this consultation, the qualifications will be submitted to NZQA before the end of the year, for listing on the NZ Qualifications framework as national qualifications. We’ve had an encouraging number of responses, and we are looking forward to a productive and enjoyable day exploring RDA using the RIMMF software. Maurice Dance : a Kiwi Jane-athon Inspired by the Jane-athons presented by ALA Publishing and the RDA Development Team earlier this year, the National Library of New Zealand cataloguing teams, in cooperation with CatSIG and The MARC of Quality, invite you to step up and join us in a Maurice Dance. This workshop has two goals: · to explore RDA data without the filter of the MARC format, using RIMMF software (RDA in Many Metadata Formats) · to look at how RDA data can be represented using linked data and what opportunities that might offer for cataloguing in the future We will use resources associated with Maurice Gee as the main theme for our dance, however other New Zealand authors, such as Janet Frame, and Katherine Mansfield could also join the set. During the Maurice Dance you will: · See a brief demonstration of how to use RIMMF to describe a couple of resources RDA used to describe a major New Zealand literary work using RIMMF software · Work in small groups to create RDA data in RIMMF for a variety of Maurice Gee (or another author) related-resources, including related works, such as motion pictures · Discuss issues you have identified from your use of RIMMF and RDA · Explore different ways of representing RDA data as linked data Your participation: We’ll all work together to make this a successful day. We expect to be working in groups of 3 – 5 people depending on levels of experience and specific interests. You should be prepared, as a minimum, to download the RIMMF software, work through the series of tutorials available on the RIMMF website<http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf3/doku.php?id=examples>, and bring along some examples to work with. Determining whether or not a bibliographic record is a match can depend upon knowing what guidelines were used in the construction of the description. This webinar seeks to provide an understanding of the variations in bibliographic description that occur within a shared cataloging environment when a variety of rules guide the process of record creation. The primary focus is on the application of specific RDA guidelines in the creation of bibliographic description through the use of excerpts from RDA, sample title pages, and sample bibliographic records. Special attention is paid to the basic principles and organization of RDA, and its relationship to FRBR. Examples highlight the variation in descriptions that can result from the application of RDA guidelines and options, as well as how these descriptions vary from those based on the application of AACR2. *Learning outcomes: *To provide a basic understanding of the application of RDA in the creation of bibliographic description for print materials through the use of excerpts from RDA, sample title pages, and sample bibliographic records. It gives library professionals the ability to classify knowledge and augments the meaningfulness of the library collection. Classification numbers exist to group similar items together, while allowing libraries to make materials findable by users. By the end of this course students will: - Use WebDewey to create Dewey Decimal Classification numbers - Use freely available online tools to create Library of Congress Classification numbers - Create call numbers based on pre-existing shelflists - Create classification numbers for children's material and internet resources - Learn the principles of classification for digital libraries - Learn how to enter classification numbers into MARC records Catelynne Sahadath is the Head of Metadata Development at the University of Calgary, where she manages the cataloguing section and works with library units to create beautiful, useful metadata. She was responsible for leading the transition from AACR2 to RDA at the UofC in 2013. Catelynne has previously worked on cataloguing and digitization projects for the Government of Canada, and her research focuses on change management in technical services and the impacts of cataloguing changes on public services. She holds an MLIS from the University of British Columbia, as well as an Honours BA from the University of Toronto. This is in response to requests in the survey for beginners RDA training. Maurice Dance : a Kiwi Jane-athon Inspired by the Jane-athons presented by ALA Publishing and the RDA Development Team earlier this year, the National Library of New Zealand cataloguing teams, in cooperation with CatSIG and The MARC of Quality, invite you to step up and join us in a Maurice Dance. This workshop has two goals: · to explore RDA data without the filter of the MARC format, using RIMMF software (RDA in Many Metadata Formats) · to look at how RDA data can be represented using linked data and what opportunities that might offer for cataloguing in the future We will use resources associated with Maurice Gee as the main theme for our dance, however other New Zealand authors, such as Janet Frame, and Katherine Mansfield could also join the set. During the Maurice Dance you will: · See a brief demonstration of how to use RIMMF to describe a couple of resources RDA used to describe a major New Zealand literary work using RIMMF software · Work in small groups to create RDA data in RIMMF for a variety of Maurice Gee (or another author) related-resources, including related works, such as motion pictures · Discuss issues you have identified from your use of RIMMF and RDA · Explore different ways of representing RDA data as linked data Your participation: We’ll all work together to make this a successful day. We expect to be working in groups of 3 – 5 people depending on levels of experience and specific interests. You should be prepared, as a minimum, to download the RIMMF software, work through the series of tutorials available on the RIMMF website<http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf3/doku.php?id=examples>, and bring along some examples to work with. Ideally, you will bring a laptop with the RIMMF software<http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf3/doku.php?id=download&nocache> loaded on it to work with on the day, but feeling reasonably comfortable with the software is more important. The system will provide: • Worldshare Metadata Services including a range of cataloguing applications and; • WorldCat Discovery including access to all WorldCat records and holdings and will also provide a separate view of the combined catalogue of New Zealand libraries (the equivalent of the National Union Catalogue.) This will be linked to Te Puna Interloan. Implementation is expected to start in August of this year and go-live is scheduled for June 2016. Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms, just in time to be released during Te Wiki o te Reo Maori, Maori Language Week. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in June 2015. There are 13 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We are delighted that we have completed all outstanding requests as far as possible, and we welcome requests for new terms. So please don’t hesitate to send in requests, queries and suggestions to reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> – Te Whakakaokao would love to hear from you. Nga kaupapa hou / New terms • Hine-pukohu-rangi = The atua associated with the mist • Io = A highly sacred deity • Kaiwawao = Defence lawyers • Kaiwhiu = Prosecution lawyers • Mahuika = The goddess of fire, sometimes referred to as a male • Matauranga whakahua = Phonetics • Mataku = Fear, dread · Mere = Greenstone clubs · Oro puare = Vowels · Roia = Lawyers · Tohu oro tapara = Double vowels · Wehi = Awe · Whakahua = Pronunciation Te mahi whakahou / Changes to existing terms • The terms relating to pronunciation and linguistics have been revised. The group looked at terms and concepts in the general area of Matauranga wetereo (linguistics) and added several new narrower terms. These include Matauranga whakahua, which is used for phonetics, Oro puare (vowels), Tohu oro tapara (double vowels), and Whakahua. • Several new terms relating to Atua have been created. -Apologies for cross posting- Dear colleagues CATSIG is considering running Rudimentary RDA webinar, a TMQ (The Marc of Quality) cataloguing workshop on 25 August. This is in response to requests in the survey for beginners RDA training. Rudimentary RDA (1 day): In the course of the workshop, we intend to answer the following questions: * How RDA is intended to help the users of our OPACs * What are FRBR, WEMI, FISO, and FRAD * What is really different about RDA * What is the RDA Toolkit * What is RIMMF * How the Toolkit and RDA-based cataloguing software (such as RIMMF) will make it simpler for us to describe and provide access to resources * What we should do with RDAMARC records that we copy, to make those records work properly in our OPACs See the TMQ website http://www.marcofquality.com/trn/rda.html for more information. Cataloguing Syriac

*Apologies for cross-posting* Hello, I have a cataloguing query and wondered if anyone can help... I have a foreign language book, which has been identified as Syriac Aramaic, in Estrangela. A colleague thinks this is similar to the works around Manichaeism, a religion founded in Persia in the 3rd century. This book was probably bound in England, mid-late 19th century, and the only English being a small label for "Watkins binder", who seemed to work with religious texts in foreign languages in late 19th C. Attached are a few photos of the title page, last page, other text and the cover. If anyone might be able to help me translate the title and imprint, please get in touch! CatSIG is offering two opportunities for sponsorship in the following cataloguing courses ***72272 Cataloguing and Classification This course builds on and enhances library skills by introducing you to the principles and practice of cataloguing and classification. It is designed to enable you to apply international standards in the creation of catalogue records. You will also be able to analyse the international standards and to develop a critical understanding of the contemporary issues affecting cataloguing and catalogue management. This course is run by the Open Polytechnic from July 2014 and is a distance learning course. Nga Upoko Tukutuku Maori Subject headings update, June 2015

Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in April 2015. There are 7 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and also 20 changed terms. This work has resolved a number of long-standing and significant issues. Nga kaupapa hou / New terms •Aratohu ma te pouako = Teachers' guides •Ngangara = Invertebrates •Ngohe = Learning activities •Puoro = Music •Rangimarie = Peace •Rauemi = Resources •Taonga = Something highly prized or valuable, which is rarely seen Te mahi whakahou / Changes to existing terms •The new top term, Taonga has been added, which is used to describe something that is rare, highly prized, or valuable. •Some persistent questions around the use of the terms Ngarara and Ngangara have been resolved. The scope of the term Ngarara has been revised to make it clear that it describes many invertebrate animals including reptiles, spiders, insects, centipedes, and various larvae. It is also used to refer to a creature or supernatural being whose form incites fear. A new narrower term, Ngangara has been added, which is limited to describing invertebrate animals including insects, worms, centipedes, gastropods and various larvae. •The scope of the term Tohu has been refined to make it clear that this refers to spiritual signs, omens and guidance as well as physical emblems, insignia, and symbols. •A new term Rangimarie has been added to convey the concept of peace. This is a narrower term of Tikanga tuku iho, which is used for abstract values and principles which underlie Maori social relations and correct conduct. It also relates to Rongomatāne, the personification of peace. •The scope and relationships of the term Patupaiarehe (used for fairylike creatures who are supernatural beings) have been clarified, and a new Tutukutuku, Tahurangi, has been added. •The scope of Matauranga has been clarified to make it clear that this refers to theoretical or practical knowledge acquired through education and/or experience. •A general term for music, Puoro has now been created. This is a narrower term of both Waka toi, Contemporary arts, and Mahi a Rehia, which is used to refer to all Maori traditional pastimes and games. •The scope of the term Whatu has been refined to make it clear that this refers to a technique of twining to weave. •A number of terms have been added to describe educational resources. Aratohu ma te pouako can be used for Teachers' resources, while Ngohe is specific to learning activities. There is also a new term Rauemi, which is used for resources in general. Join us on a Janeathon?

A group of NLNZ cataloguers were intrigued by the “Janeathon” held at the American Library Association’s Mid-winter conference in January. The purpose of the workshop was to: “catalog Jane Austen resources with software specifically designed to use RDA: Resource Description and Access [RIMMF]. In addition to building practical experience with "native" (not MARC-based) RDA, participants will explore the very real issues inherent in using Resource Description Framework (RDF) statements in aggregated “packages” ready to contribute to the Linked Data world.” The details of the original event can be found here<http://www.rdatoolkit.org/janeathon>, and a report on the event is available here<http://www.rda-jsc.org/Jane-athon.html>. We would like to try something similar here in New Zealand and wondered whether any of you would like to join us. CatSig has identified this as an area of interest for New Zealand cataloguers and are adding their support. Thanks to CatSig, we are very fortunate that Deborah Fritz, one of the presenters at the ALA Janeathon, is likely to be present. We are considering holding the event in Wellington just before or just after the National Digital Forum. This year NDF itself is on 13th -14th October. As covered in the information about the original event, you must be prepared to be an active participant. You don’t have to be an expert in either RIMMF or RDA, but you should come ready to work with both. You should be prepared, as a minimum, to download the RIMMF software, work through the series of tutorials available on the RIMMF website<http://www.marcofquality.com/wiki/rimmf3/doku.php?id=examples>, and bring along some examples to work with. Ideally, you would be able to bring a laptop with the RIMMF software loaded on it to work with on the day, but being at least a little familiar with the software beforehand is more important. While the cataloguers at the National Library have spent quite a lot of time using RDA, we are novices in the use of RIMMF and still grappling with RDF triples and what it all means for cataloguing. This means that we are not in a position to offer the full range of expertise available at the original Janeathon, but hopefully we can provide a supportive and fun space to explore, trial and learn, and have some interesting and constructive conversations around RDA and linked data. Become a part of an innovative team at Wheelers, a large New Zealand library supplier providing outsourced selection, cataloguing and processing services. Wheelers is seeking a professionally qualified cataloguer with at least 3 years' recent cataloguing experience. The cataloguer will be responsible for performing a variety of bibliographic duties in the customer's Library Management System, including original cataloguing and bibliographic record upgrades of books and DVDs. Cataloguing is done according to national and international practices and standards (RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA and Dewey 23) as well as customer requirements. The cataloguer will function as part of a team of professionals and paraprofessionals to ensure that outgoing materials meet company standards in terms of quality, timeliness and quantity. Experience with original cataloguing and cataloguing of DVDs would be an advantage but training will be provided The pay rate is competitive, and will be commensurate with skills and experience. Latest Library of Congress BIBFRAME update forum video available

The video of the latest Library of Congress BIBFRAME update forum, which was held at ALA Midwinter on 1 Feb, is now available. Nga Upoko Tukutuku Maori Subject headings update, February 2015

Tena tatou katoa We are pleased to announce that Nga Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Maori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in December 2014. There are 14 new terms that have been added to Nga Upoko Tukutuku and are ready for use in library catalogues, and also a significant number of changed terms. Nga kaupapa hou / New terms * Ana = Caves * Aria whakaako= Pedagogy * Eke hoiho= Horse-riding * Haereere ana = Caving * Haereere awa = River activities * Hokakatanga = Sexual behaviour and identity * Kaituhi = Authors * Kanga = Corn * Mahaki = Humility * Moari = Traditional swings * Poraka = Frogs * Ritenga = Practices, Processes, Rites, Rituals * Whakahihi = Arrogance, Pride, Vanity * Whakataetae hoiho = Equestrian events Te mahi whakahou / Changes to existing terms A number of existing terms have been amended, some of which have been changed significantly. These terms include: *The terms for sexuality and sexual organs have revised to clarify the distinction between physical anatomy and sexual identity. A new term, Hokakatanga has been added to encompass all aspects of sexuality relating to the physical, emotional and mental aspects of sexual behaviour and identity, while the scope of the existing term Taihemahema is now limited to sexual organs. *A new term Kaituhi has been added to refer to authors, writers, and scribes. Previously, authors had been subsumed within the more general term Hunga mahi toi , which denotes artists and creators of all kinds. *A long-standing request for a term for frogs has now been resolved. The term Poraka has been created, and is located as a narrower term of Aitanga pepeke, the domain of insects, arthropods, and hopping and jumping animals. *The scope of the term Tikanga (ceremonies, customs, protocols, traditions) has been revised and a new narrower term Ritenga has been added. The latter describes methods of applying cultural practices, and can also apply to Western ideas of rites and rituals. *The scope notes relating to the atua Tangaroa and Hinemoana have been revised to make it clear that Tangaroa is the guardian of the sea, and all things living in it, while Hinemoana is the embodiment of the deep seas and the guardian of instruments made of seashells. *The scope and relationships of the terms Kirehu (idoms), Kiwaha (colloquial idoms) and Pepeha (tribal mottos) have been clarified and expanded.
