Adjunct faculty (marker) sought for cataloguing and classification course

The Open Polytechnic is the main tertiary education provider of undergraduate courses and programmes in information, library and recordkeeping studies in New Zealand. Information and Library Studies courses are taught by distance and online, supported by print and multimedia. We are looking for an experienced cataloguer to mark assignments for 72272 Cataloguing and Classification. This is a part-time role, done remotely and through an online marking system. Adjunct faculty can be based anywhere in New Zealand. The assignments cover: • RDA and MARC (Assignment 1). Students create catalogue records for specified resources (not including classification or subject headings). • issues facing library catalogues (Assignment 2). Discussion paper as for colleagues in a library. The work takes place in the second half of the year since the course is not offered in Trimester 1. It's likely to take 10-20 hours work for each assignment, but the time commitment is flexible, and depends both on the amount of time the marker has available and on the numbers in the course. Assignments are due week of 13 August and week of 24 September. The exam (covering classification and subject headings) is marked by the course leader, as are some of the assignments. This is a level 6 (second year) course that is compulsory in the BA (Information and Library Studies) and also taken as part of the Information and Library Studies Diploma (Level 6). Long term it will be replaced by a similar course in the new BLIS degree that we are developing, and we would hope that the marker could continue involvement with the replacement course. Main requirements * Current practical experience cataloguing with RDA and MARC. * MLIS or equivalent/older qualification or appropriate experience as a cataloguing librarian. * Understanding of the wider information and knowledge organisation landscape and the developments that are affecting library catalogues and cataloguing, such as BIBFRAME, Library Reference Model (LRM), linked data, Ngā Upoko Tukutuku/Māori Subject Headings, changes in information seeking behaviour. Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Māori Subject Headings Update - Kohitātea/January 2018

Tēnā tātou katoa We are pleased to announce that Ngā Upoko Tukutuku, the Maori Subject Headings project has completed another upload of new kaupapa/terms. These terms came from the work of Te Whakakaokao, the Māori Subject Headings Working Group, at a hui held in late November 2017. There are 15 new terms that have been added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku and are now ready for use in library catalogues, and a number of changed terms. We welcome requests for new terms. These include: Kuputaka (Glossaries), Pūrongo (Reports), and Tuhinga nā te hunga taiohi (Young adults’ writings). New terms relating to data (Raraunga) and data sovereignty (Mana raraunga) have also been created. We have significantly revised and updated the scope of the term Takatāpui, which encompasses Rainbow communities, Genderqueer, LGBTQI, and other gender identities as self-identified by these communities. There is now a term for Kāinga, defined as a contemporary term for home or residence. Terms have now been added for the human embryo, Kikiri, and the human foetus, Kukune tangata. We also now have a term for microorganisms, Moroiti. A new reo-ā-iwi term, Mounga has been added, which is the Taranaki term for mountains. We have also updated the Ngaati Maniapoto reo ā iwi terms to incorporate double vowels rather than macrons, as reflects local practice. We now have a term for Speakers, Kaikōrero, and Kaikaranga, the woman who performs a karanga. We have created a term for mist, Kohu, with the appropriate relationships to the atua Hine-pūkohu-rangi, Tangaroa and Papatūānuku. Alma search ext resources

Kia ora koutou, Anyone else struggling under the weight of end-of-year purchases that need cataloguing? I’ve done more in the past 2 weeks than in the previous 2 months combined! Anyhoo, what I wanted to ask about was the Search External Resources function in Alma. When it asked what we’d like to search (Search Cataloguing Profile) the options include: · Australian National Bibliography · British Library · Library of Congress · OCLC · Oxford University · Te Puna Now in reality for us only OCLC and Te Puna actually work. I’ve discussed this with our Digital Access team who are of the opinion that the other profiles would cost us a lot of money to set up and get access to. Is this right? Does anyone have access to these other profiles? Can you share a bit about what it costs/how you set it up? We’re particularly interested in the British Library and Australian NB in that order, as it would be a huge help with some of our serials cataloguing where we can find a good record on the British Library website but have no way to import it other than very slow copying line by line (that’s manual typing as you will probably be aware that copy/paste doesn’t work so well in the Alma metadata editor). Marc records for conference proceedings

Kia ora koutou, A colleague has come to me with a cataloguing request that I wanted to get some expert advice on – They have a list of over 400 conference proceedings in a dataset and wondered if she and I could write some code to convert them into Marc records. At this stage I’m not worried about writing the code, more about what the Marc records would look like. And if they would be of use to anyone? Useful for interloans? Should we put them on Te Puna? The Alma Community Zone? Figshare? Some may be creating doubleups for ones that exist – is this an issue? The info in the data includes: (some gaps) · Conference name · Year · Conference number · Place · url of proceedings If anyone has any advice/suggestions/comments on this issue I would really appreciate it. Whether it’s about what the Marc record should look like, where we should put them, advice to not do this as it wouldn’t be useful, any and all opinions welcome. Deadline extend for expression of interest for the RDA original cataloguing webinar series

Deadline extend until 6 October, to see if we can get enough interest to run this webinar. CatSIG is looking at the possibility of offering a webinar series from Farkas Training in Australia to provide some RDA training in November. There is the possibility of follow up sessions next year with either face-to-face or additional webinar training on the 'look and feel' of the upgraded RDA toolkit (which will be released in late April). The webinar series is based on the two-day 'Cataloguing the RDA Way' course, and covers the same material in a series of five 2-hour sessions, offered on alternate days between 20 and 29 November. Participants will receive electronic copies of the manual, and a set of exercises they will be asked to do in their own time between sessions. Each session comprises a review of the exercises from the previous webinar, the time and ability to forward questions and obtain answers online, and the new material presented with the aid of powerpoint slides and the Toolkit. Participants will be given access to the Toolkit for the duration of the series. Cataloguing the RDA way The course focuses on practical cataloguing using the RDA Toolkit and instruction sets. All aspects of RDA are covered in the detail need to create complete bibliographic records. The Trainers, Lynn Farkas and Helen Rowe are experienced cataloguers, qualified trainers and designated RDA trainers. In the last three years, Helen and Lynn have delivered webinars and face-to-face RDA training to many hundreds of librarian and technician cataloguers across Australia. They also teach cataloguing online to undergraduate and masters students in the School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt University, and have written workbooks on cataloguing and reference services in the 'Learn Library Skills' series published by TotalRecall Press, USA. Gaining more familiarity with the toolkit now, will assist with understanding and using the revised toolkit when it is released next year. We need a minimum of 10 people for the webinars to go ahead. The LRM was endorsed by the IFLA Professional Committee in August 2017; the final version is available at: https://www.ifla.org/publications/node/11412.<https://www.ifla.org/publications/node/11412> There are no significant changes to the LRM from the draft version used for the RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R) Project by the RSC and its working groups. The project includes development of RDA as an implementation of the new model, which consolidates the separate IFLA Functional Requirements models on which RDA is based. The RSC recommends RDA Toolkit users to familiarize themselves with the LRM in preparation for the release of the new Toolkit in 2018.
