Expression of interest in a RDA webinar series

CatSIG is looking at the possibility of offering a webinar series from Farkas Training in Australia to provide some RDA training in November. There is the possibility of follow up sessions next year with either face-to-face or additional webinar training on the 'look and feel' of the upgraded RDA toolkit (which will be released in late April). The webinar series is based on the two-day 'Cataloguing the RDA Way' course, and covers the same material in a series of five 2-hour sessions, offered on alternate days between 20 and 29 November. Participants will receive electronic copies of the manual, and a set of exercises they will be asked to do in their own time between sessions. Each session comprises a review of the exercises from the previous webinar, the time and ability to forward questions and obtain answers online, and the new material presented with the aid of powerpoint slides and the Toolkit. Participants will be given access to the Toolkit for the duration of the series. The Trainers, Lynn Farkas and Helen Rowe are experienced cataloguers, qualified trainers and designated RDA trainers. In the last three years, Helen and Lynn have delivered webinars and face-to-face RDA training to many hundreds of librarian and technician cataloguers across Australia. They also teach cataloguing online to undergraduate and masters students in the School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt University, and have written workbooks on cataloguing and reference services in the 'Learn Library Skills' series published by TotalRecall Press, USA. Gaining more familiarity with the toolkit now, will assist with using the revised toolkit when it is released next year. We need a minimum of 10 people for the webinars to go ahead. To inform the Review it is critical that LIANZA is able to provide clear examples and evidence about how copyright is and is not working for New Zealand libraries. We welcome multiple responses from institutions as staff with different roles will provide a valuable range of perspectives and stories. We are seeking professionally qualified cataloguers for our growing business and we are offering attractive terms. Work is full-time or part-time and we offer genuinely flexible working hours including school hours and the potential to work some hours from home. Cataloguers at Wheelers are responsible for performing a variety of bibliographic duties in the customers Library Management Systems, including original cataloguing and bibliographic record upgrades of books and DVDs. Cataloguing is done according to national and international practices and standards (RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LCSH, LCNA and Dewey 23) as well as customer requirements. Cataloguers will function as part of a team of professionals and paraprofessionals to ensure that outgoing materials meet company standards in terms of quality, timeliness and quantity. At least 3 years recent cataloguing experience is preferred. Experience with original cataloguing would be an advantage but training will be provided. The current terms of reference (below) were adopted in 2009: 1) Review and maintain IFLA's FRBR family of conceptual models on an ongoing basis, developing revisions when needed; 2) Develop and make available guidelines and interpretative documents to assist those applying the models; 3) Promote the models and encourage their use in all appropriate information organising communities and maintain links with relevant groups both within IFLA and in other communities. The FRBR family of conceptual models goes beyond the three original IFLA models, FRBR, FRAD and FRSAD; it includes FRBROO and the new IFLA Library Reference Model, soon to be endorsed as an IFLA standard. FRBR Review Group members serve 4-year terms, and new members are eligible for one renewal of an additional 4 years. The FRBR Review Group holds two meetings during IFLA’s annual World Library and Information Congress, and sometimes a third meeting, as needed for the work that has to be accomplished. During the WLIC in Wroclaw, the Review Group will meet twice. Nominees should be experts in areas relevant to conceptual modeling of bibliographic data, with a sound knowledge of the FRBR family of conceptual models. In the next four years, one of the primary responsibilities of the RG will be to promote FRBROO and IFLA LRM, to develop interpretive and supporting documents that assist those who are applying the models, and to liaise with the communities and projects that are using the models in specific applications. Review Group members must be able to get funding on their own for traveling to IFLA meetings. Nominees do not need to be a member of the Standing Committees of the Cataloguing, Bibliography or Subject Analysis and Access Sections to be eligible for the Review Group, but should either be a personal member of IFLA or work at an institution/be a member of an association that is a member of IFLA.
