A change in coding for NLNZ local genre/form terms

Kia ora koutou, The National Library of New Zealand (NLNZ) is changing the subfield 2 coding of its established local genre/form terms, and dropping the use of subfield 5 for these terms. Our practice had been to code our local genre/form terms as 655 7 ‡a <term> ‡2 local ‡5 Nz (for example, 655 7 ‡a Sophisticated picture books. ‡2 local ‡5 Nz) From 14 July 2025 onwards, we will be using 655 7 ‡a <term> ‡2 nznb (for example, 655 7 ‡a Sophisticated picture books. ‡2 nznb) The change in coding eliminates the need for subfield 5, and provides consistency with our other authority work. You can request a file of MARC21 authority records for NLNZ genre/form terms by contacting nznb(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:nznb@dia.govt.nz>. Practical training for Official RDA - new NLNZ resources released

Kia ora koutou The latest release of our practical training resources in Official RDA is now available through Niche Academy. https://my.nicheacademy.com/natlib.gov.nz The tutorials in this release include: * Serial works * Archived websites * Music scores These tutorials are aimed at cataloguers already describing these types of resources and they assume you have completed all the previous training. There is also a new tutorial on parallel aggregates. This tutorial is limited to describing parallel aggregate text resources with a static extension plan. Resources to support your RDA training<https://my.nicheacademy.com/natlib.gov.nz/course/78231?categoryId=27693> has been updated and includes the on-request resources listed in the Phase 1 training plan so you can access them directly. We’ve also added a new document to our resources on the Toolkit: RDA Toolkit - NLNZ approach to resource description<https://access.rdatoolkit.org/Document/Document?documentId=efa32f78-2ecd-4f…>. This document is used as a starting point for NLNZ cataloguers but may be of interest to others. As well as links to all our MAPs and supporting documentation it includes an expected workflow, questions to start your thinking when deciding how to describe a resource and links to resources to help make decisions. NLNZ cataloguers are now training in music sound recordings and cartographic resources and you will start to see records for these resources soon. We came away from this catch-up with some key topics to focus discussions on going forward: August 2025 Education and professional development: what’s available and what needs aren’t being met in New Zealand? November 2025 Systems: comparing notes on LMSs February 2026 Reparative description: problematic terminology and how do you identify and deal with it? LIANZA CAT SIG - CATALOGUING UPDATE AND DISCUSSION FORUM Tuesday May 20, 10.00AM-11.00AM It has been a while since cataloguers have had a chance to get together to kōrero about cataloguing issues, and a lot has been going on! This is an opportunity to come together virtually to discuss what’s happening in the cataloguing world, including the progress of Official RDA. As a starting point, these are some discussion questions we want to discuss: Cataloguing in general * Are you a sole cataloguer, or are you in a team? * How much cataloguing is a part of your role? * How much original / copy / [other] cataloguing do you do? * What has changed over the last few years with respect to cataloguing in your institution? * What challenges are at the forefront of your mind and your colleagues ' minds? * Do you feel you have enough cataloguing support in your role? Official RDA * Have you had a chance to engage with official RDA, e.g. in training, reading, or watching webinars? * What changes have you seen coming through in catalogue records (e.g. NLNZ official RDA implementation)? * How have these changes affected what you do? * What approach have you taken to decide how to respond to the changes? * Have you started original cataloguing using Official RDA Communication * How much communication do you have with cataloguers outside of your institution? * Would it be helpful to have more communication? * What ways?
