Assist the National Library of Cambodia (NLC) with the use of its collections through offering and promoting a greater range of services.
The NLC originally established in 1924 by the French colonial administration, and re-opened in 1980 after the Khmer Rouge genocide, is currently struggling to improve its services with a small number of professionally qualified staff and scarce resources.
The Library is looking for an experienced Library Adviser to mentor and support its staff to use a newly installed electronic library system, to publish a National Bibliography of Cambodia and to improve the content of its website.
This is a two-year assignment.
The VSA website has recently undergone a revamp and assignment descriptions can now be downloaded straight from their website. http://www.vsa.org.nz/volunteer/vacancies/index.html
I was a volunteer at the National Library of Cambodia in 2006 and am in regular contact with the current volunteer. If anyone is interested in more information about living in Phnom Penh or about the Library itself, please feel free to contact me.

Hi Auckland cataloguers
The Amitabha hospice is a volunteer service to all areas within Auckland. Please see link to our service http://www.amitabhahospice.org/
"Following the World Health Organization's guidelines for palliative care, the NZ Palliative Care Strategy and the NZ Cancer Strategy for Palliative Care, we provide free practical help and companionship for those with progressive degenerative conditions / terminal illness with specially trained volunteers".
We rely on grants and donations to provide our service hence our request to members of your organisation..
We have a small library of about 600 books and would very much appreciate it - if there is any cataloguer or retired cataloguer out there who would be interested in a volunteer project of cataloguing our small library. Or advising us the best way to catalogue our library. The library is situated at 44 Powell Street Avondale Auckland. Ideally we would like the catalogue accessible from the Internet so that once set up new books can be added from a volunteer's home.
Looking forward to a reply from you.
Thanking you for your kindness.

OCLC announces Expert Community Experiment
In response to requests from the cataloging community, OCLC is
introducing the Expert Community Experiment, which enables OCLC members
to make more changes to WorldCat records. During the Experiment, OCLC
libraries with full-level cataloging authorizations will have the
ability to improve and upgrade WorldCat master bibliographic records.
The additional capabilities provided by the Experiment are an expansion
of those that have been available through various database enrichment
programs since 1991.
The Experiment begins in February 2009 and will last six months.
Introductory Web information sessions will be held throughout February
for those interested in participating in the Experiment.
OCLC hopes that these changes will result in more corrections and
additions to master bibliographic records and more timely actions to
correct record problems. The Experiment is inspired by long-standing
requests from members to be able to do more-and more immediate-upgrading
of WorldCat records. The Experiment also allows OCLC to test a "social
cataloging" model involving the existing community of cataloging experts
who have built WorldCat record-by-record over the past four decades.
Interest in such an experiment has grown with the launch of WorldCat
Local and with the popularity of other socially cooperative ventures,
such as Wikipedia.
