Hi Everyone We seem to be receiving a few books with different titles, but they are essentially the same book. They have different places of publication, so that isn't the issue. We have been getting feedback from borrowers that they have already read the book, but the title was different. To show the different titles are the same item we have put added title entries for the alternate title on both bibliographic records, linking them that way. However, unless borrowers look on the catalogue, they won't be able to know the book in hand has been published under another title that they may have read recently. Can you please tell me how you have dealt and/or are dealing with this problem. Greetings Cataloguers The following text is the comments sent to the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA from Senior Cataloguers at the National Library. The final date for the submission of comments was February 2nd and comments received from the various constituents will be posted on the RDA website http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/jsc/rdafulldraft.html . The only other set of comments I'm aware of so far are those from Sweden, which are available at http://www.biblioteksforeningen.org/komm/katalog/pdf/sweden_comments%20on%2… RDA full draft - Constituency Review of full draft Comments from the National Library of New Zealand January 30 2009 The comments below reflect our views of the aspects of the draft we have been able to examine during the review period. We do not claim to have looked the entire draft in detail. 1. General Comments · We consider the overall structure of the draft to be sound. The basic division into attributes and relationships reinforces a useful way of thinking for cataloguers · At a general level we think we can work with these rules as currently written · The lack of references to principles except at the highest level is very disappointing and repeats a failing of AACR. We consider that this will limit the ability of cataloguers to deal with new situations and encourage a “case- law” rather than a principles-based approach to cataloguing · It seems that there is a requirement to record attributes and primary relationships for each of the Group 1 entities only when a work exists in more than one expression. Thus if there is only one expression of a work, there is no need to record a relationship between a manifestation and that expression, or between a manifestation and the work. Rules 0.6.5 and 17.3 plus the examples in Chapters 6,7, 17 and Appendix M have lead us to this conclusion, although there we could find no explicit statements to support our view. If recording primary relationships is not required, or not applicable, for a large percentage of resources, we consider that this should be clearly specified in RDA. We are also concerned at the impact this non-recording could have on the effective display and retrieval of bibliographic information in the longer term. · The use of controlled vocabularies is useful, but the use of “other” for new terms is not - it dates data very quickly and lends itself to local practice and workarounds. Better to have guidance on how and when to use a term that doesn’t appear in the list. 2. Specific Comments · 0.6 Core elements Language is not a core element at present. We would like to see it a core element as an attribute of expressions for the content types where language applies. At present it appears that language is only added when needed to distinguish entities or it could be that there is an implicit assumption that language will be part of an encoding standard. We consider language to be a fundamental element in fulfilment of the FRBR user tasks and therefore that it should be a core element in RDA. · Chapters 6 and 7 cover attributes of works and expressions. We cannot see the need for a structure that places some attributes of works in one chapter and other attributes in a different chapter (and similarly for expressions), particularly when individual rules do not always identify the entity to which the instruction applies, e.g. rule 7.11.2.1. · 6.3.1.3 - Form of work looks like an area where a defined list would be useful, taking into account the comment under above about the use of controlled vocabularies. It would be very easy to generate duplicate work records based on different terms for the same form without some kind of control. 3. Examples · 1.8.4. · The first example lacks a full reference to what appears on the source of information · The second example shows an unexplained (and unnecessary?) chang e of punctuation - from the use of a hyphen “1961-2” to the use of a slash “1961/1962” · 6.2.10.1 The King of the Hill example is poorly chosen. This episode title is also the title of a completely different television program. A different episode title would avoid this confusion. · 6.7.1.3 Form of Old English example does not match the form listed in ISO639-2 · 6.12.1.4 Form of Ancient Greek example does not match the form listed in ISO639-2 · 6.2.2.5. Exception. Anonymous works written in neither Greek nor in the preferred script of the agency. · The first 3 examples would be more explicit if the preferred language of the agency was stated. · The description of the final example should include both language and script preference of the agency to support the choice of title · 7.16.1.3. The example for a bibliography includes page numbers. If recording supplementary content is an expression-level attribute, pagination is not appropriate as this can change between manifestations of the same expression. Advice on how to catalogue series

Hi, I'm the cataloguer at the Far North District Libraries and am struggling with the new series rules. Can anyone advise how the 490 and 8XX are to work? My understanding is that the 490 tag is not searchable. Therefore, an 8XX tag is used. Would this normally be an 800 with the author's name followed by the series title? When is an 830 tag used? What are you doing about a series that currently has 440 tag and new items come in for the same series? Are you changing all the 440s for that series to 490 and adding the appropriate 8XX tag? His final paragraph also suggests looking at the sample workflows and we will definitely be taking that advice here at the National Library. First, I sympathize with the problems that everyone is having downloading and printing the files. I had similar problems. With several of the longer files, I had to restart the download when it seemed to hang up. I saved the files to my hard drive before printing (others have suggested a CD). I had problems printing a fair number of pages in Chapters 6, 9 and 11; everything else seemed to print without problems. There were some pages that I had to print on other printers which (I suspect) had more memory. John offered some other suggestions. I apologize on behalf of the Co-Publishers for the unsatisfactory nature of the PDF files. The developers tried very hard to provide the text of RDA for this review in a version of the RDA software, so that you could see it as it was meant to be seen. It was only at the end of the day on November 6 that a decision was made that this would not be possible. At that point, some of the work may have been done on an output format for the PDF files, but none of them had yet been created. This was all done late in the process. The Joint Steering Committee no longer has direct control over the text of RDA. This is why the PDF files were posted on the rdaonline.org site and not on the JSC site. The final edits for the full draft were turned over to the developers by the JSC Editor early in September and the developers spent considerable time and effort to make all of the changes that the JSC had specified and to convert all of the data to XML format. The JSC has had no interaction with the text of RDA since September. Second, you will note in the cover letter ("Transfer of the draft text" at the bottom of page 1) that the process of converting the text to XML introduced a large number of typographical errors as described in the cover letter. In addition, the process of creating the PDF files introduced a number of additional typographical errors that are not present in the underlying XML data. If there had been sufficient time, both of these categories of error could have been eliminated; however, a decision was made that it was more important to get the text out for you to review than to make the text at this stage. A full and rigorous proofreading will take place before the final product is released and these errors will be eliminated. Although the cover letter suggests that you may report typographical errors, my advice is to try to ignore them and not to be distracted by incidental errors while you are reviewing the text for major problems. In general, I would advise that you approach this exercise with a great deal of patience and tolerance. We know that this is not an ideal situation, but the situation is what it is. The exercise at hand is to review the text looking for inconsistencies or other major problems that have not yet been identified. I hope that you can try to filter out the distractions caused by incidental errors and concentrate on larger issues. Third, Greta de Groat mentioned the sample workflow for monographs that is included among the supplementary files. I would urge that you look at this. In practice, RDA will not be used by reading through entire chapters, much less the entire text, but rather it will be used in a particular context to create particular bibliographic or authority records. We hope that RDA can be integrated by ILS vendors into their software so that the workforms that you use to create records can be linked to the appropriate RDA instructions. Another way in which RDA can be used in context is to follow a workflow such as those provided as samples. Users of the RDA online product will be able to use such workflows, to create their own, and to share workflows with other users. The workflow is another way of guiding you through the instructions to the particular sections of RDA that you will need to apply. Designing your own workflow for types of records you routinely create -- even if only a brief outline -- could be very helpful in your review of RDA. Query on name authority

Hi everybody I am trying to unpick some headings for the author/s Philip Holden, who on our merged catalogue has headings under no dates, 1937- and 1938-. On doing searches on LC Authorities and looking at the authority records we already have in place, I am beginning to feel a little confused, as the notes that have been added are a little ambiguous. Is anyone able to confirm to me that the Philip Holden who writes on NZ hunting also has written westerns under three known pseudonyms? I am reasonably sure I can eliminate the confusion between the 1938 and 1937 entries - they do appear to be the same person - because one has mention of a date incorrectly printed on a book jacket. Is this also 'our' NZ Philip Holden, the hunter, and has he also written titles on hunting in Australia? I started to do some searching on the net but got bogged down with entries from libraries and bookshops that didn't actually give me the information I need and figured there are quicker ways to do this.
