The National Library of New Zealand sits within the Information and Knowledge Services branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. Our branch is all about connecting New Zealanders to trusted information. This role sits in one of the monographic cataloguing teams within the Content Services directorate of the National Library. Content Services is responsible for acquiring and describing the published collections of the National Library of New Zealand, including the Alexander Turnbull Library, and creating and maintaining New Zealand's National Bibliography. As a Collection Description Librarian, you will make a big difference to how people access and use the published collections by creating high quality, accurate descriptions of resources. To succeed in this role you will: · Have an understanding of the need for bibliographic description, subject analysis and authority control, and would relish the opportunity to develop skills in this area · Be curious, and unafraid to ask questions · Demonstrate an ability to analyse material and summarise content effectively · Be comfortable with technology and interested in how we can use it to help make the library's collections more discoverable · Have an enthusiasm for learning and be quick to pick up new skills · Enjoy problem solving and nutting things out · Have an eye for detail · Enjoy working in a team and developing strong peer relationships In return you will be trained to create high quality bibliographic records using international standards, giving you a solid foundation for future work in the metadata space. [Apologies for cross-posting] Tēnā koutou, The new and changed headings from the Mahuru/September Te Whakakaokao/Māori Subject Headings Working Group hui of 2018 are now available for use on the National Library website. As usual, files are also available for download to update copies in local systems. We’d love some requests for new terms! The next hui will be held in Hakihea/December 2018 and as always we'd like to hear any new suggestions you may have for the rōpū (group) to consider. It's a really easy process: if you're handling a collection item that is either in te reo Māori or has content about Māori, and you can't find an existing term in our thesaurus to suit your item, please email reo(a)dia.govt.nz<mailto:reo@dia.govt.nz> with your suggestion and the details of what you were working on. Suggestions where you don't know a Māori term are just fine. These include: Kaihanga uku (Potters), Uku (Pottery), Tā tuhi (Prints), and Tukanga toi (Artistic process). These are accompanied by a group of new terms relating to music and musicians, such as Ariā pūoro (Music theory), Rōpū pūoro (Musical groups), Rakuraku (Guitar), Tira waiata (Vocal groups) and Kaitito (Composers). New terms have been created to describe different types of moving image and audio resources, including Rīpene whakaata (Videotapes), Rīpene whakarongo (Audio tapes), and Pāhotanga mataora (Live broadcasts). Other new terms that will be useful when describing the form or genre of different kinds of resources include: Titonga tōpū (Scores), Whakarāpopototanga (Abstracts), and Pūoro whakaari (Dramatic musical works). The terms that describe the different kinds of programmes have been reworked and clarified, and the existing general term, Hōtaka, has been disestablished. There are now separate terms for learning programmes (Hōtaka (Ako)), broadcast programmes (Hōtaka (Pāpāho)), and social service programmes (Hōtaka (Ratonga ki te iwi)). Some new terms have been created which will be applicable when describing resources in the area of environmental protection: Para (Rubblish), Koiora orotā (Pest control), Kararehe kaikino (Animal pests). A term has been created for Pīwauwau, the alpine rock wren, along with broader terms for alpine birds (Manu rohe maunga), and mountain birds (Manu maunga). What's Next for RDA and the 3R Project?

The RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign Project, better known as the 3R Project, seeks to improve the usability of the Toolkit and to address a range of cataloging issues, including the implementation of the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM). Since the June rollout of the RDA Toolkit beta site, the publishers of RDA and the RDA Steering Committee (RSC) have been collecting community feedback on the direction of both the standard and the website and are still making key decisions that will lead to the completion of the 3R Project. Join a discussion with representatives from the RSC, the North American RDA Committee and ALA Publishing, as they address the community feedback to the beta site, changes coming in September and beyond, and how the North American community can contribute to the continuing enhancement of RDA.
